To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM W. CLARK- SON, of Danville, county of Pittsylvania, State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Marking Tobacco-Rows; and I hereby declare the same to be fully, clearly, and exactly described as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a perspective view of the machine; Fig. 2, a bottom plan of the upper plate attached to the standard. Figs. 3 and at are transverse and longitudinal sectional views of the saddle; and Fig. 5 is a perspective view, on an enlarged scale, of the marker.

My invention has reference to machines for marking the rows at intervals to indicate the places for setting out tobacco or other plants; and it consists in adevice for smoothing and truing the list, for breaking the clods. and for marking the list with a transverse groove and central depression,the parts being constructed and operating as follows.

In the drawings, A is the beam, and a the handles, secured thereto by braces a, after the manner of an ordinary plow.

B is the standard having at its upper end a transverse plate, I), secured to the beam A by means ofbolts 1). One of the bolts passes through a slot, Z), curved in the arc of a circle about the other bolt. On the lower end ofthe standard is secured by boltsfthe mold-board or saddle F. This latter is substantially ot' the curvature on its under face of an ordinary saddle, hence the term I use to designate it, and is curved upward in front, as shown.

To the standard B are secured arms 0 by means of bolts 0, that pass through slots 0, whereby the arms are made vertically adjustable on the standard. In the ends of the arms is pivoted the wheel D, on the periphery of which is the marker E. This latter has in the center a circular and headed boss, 0, and at either side is made V-shaped in cross-section, as shown.

In operation the standard 13 and saddle F are turned so as to be at a slight angle with the axis of the beam A, and are securely bolted in that position. The device is then drawn to and fro over the rows, the saddle sliding on the top of the list, smoothing the same and breaking the clods. The wheel D, as it follows the saddle, flattens the top of the list, and at each revolution (or oftener, according to the number of markers) the transverse rib E and boss 0 form in the top of the list a depression, from which leads a gutter or groove to the side of the ridge.

The object of inclining the saddle to the axis of the beam is to admit of the horse walking between the rows while the machine runs on the top of the list. The handles are inclined to the opposite side, so that the driver walks on the other side of the row.

The peculiar construction of the marking rib and boss is a salient feature of my device. Heretofore simple holes have been punched in the ground, which would fill up and become entirely obliterated by a heavy rain. The rib E forms gutters leading from the central hole, made by boss 0, to the sides of the ridge, which conduct away the water. The arms (J are made vertically adjustable upon the standard, so as to regulate the pressure of the wheel on the top of the list.

The deviceis simple in construction and per fectly efficient and satisfactory in operation.

Having thus described myinvention, what I claim is 1. In a machine for marking plantrows, a saddle, F, having its under side curved to conform to the shape of the list and its front upturned, as set forth, and a marking-wheel secured behind the saddle and provided with a transverse marking-rib, as set forth.

2. In a machine for marking plant-rows, a saddle adjnstably secured to the beam and curved to conform to the shape of the list, and a wheel having a transverse marking-rib provided with a central boss. as set forth.

3. In combination with the wheel 1) the V- shaped rib E and boss 6, as set forth.

4. In combination with the beam and handles, the standard B, adjustably secured to the beam, the arms 0, wheel D, marker E e, and saddle F, as set forth.
