Application filed April 30, 1881. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, WILLIAM SEEMAN, of Honesdale, Wayne county,Pennsylvania,have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Door and Sash Securer, of which the following is a specification.

Figure l is a front elevation of my improvement, shown as applied to a window, part of the casin g being broken away. Fig.2 is a side elevation of the same, the sashes being shown in section, and Fig. 3 represents the fastener with the pawl turned back or folded. Fig. 4 illustrates a modification of the fastener.

The object of this invention is to facilitate the fastening of window-sashes.

The invention consists in constructing a win (low-sash fastening with two plates attached to each other at their lower ends and connected at their upper ends by a swiveled screw, and the pawl hinged to the upper end of one of the plates, whereby the fastener can be adjusted to the size of the space between the sash and casin g, and can he made to secure both sashes, as will be hereinafter fully described.

A represents the casing. B is the partingbead. G is the upper sash, and D is the lower sash, of a window. E is a narrow plate, which may be of any convenient length.

To the lower end of the plate E is attached the lower end of a plate, F, which is made a little shorter than the said plate E, as shown in the drawings. The plates E F can be made in one piece, bent into V shape, and hammered or welded to give the bend or wedge shape.

In the upper end of the plate F is formed a screw-hole to receive a hand-screw, G, the forward end of which is swiveled to the upper part of the plate E, so that the upper ends of the plates E F can be adjusted closer together or farther apart by turning the said screw Gr.

To one corner of the upper end of the plate E is attached a short stud, H, to the end of which is hinged, by a screw, I, the end of a pawl, J, which can be turned up to engage with the side rail of the upper sash or with a ratchet plate, K, attached to the said side rail. To the other corner of the upper end of the plateE is secured, by a screw, L, the end of a small bar, M, which is tapered and has teeth formed upon its side edges, as shown in Fig. 3. The bar M is designed for use in fastening a door, to prevent it from being opened from outside the room, and is attached to the plate E for convenience in carryingit. WVhen the bar M is to be used it is detached from the plate E, is inserted between the forward edge of the door and the door-jamb, and is then turned so as to force the teeth upon one edge into-the edge of the door and the teeth upon its other edge into the jamb, so that the door cannot be opened without forcing the said teeth to tear their way through the wood.

In using the fastener the ends of the plates E F are inserted between the upper end of the side rail of the lower sash and the casing of the window, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the screw G being adjusted to bring the upper ends of the said plates E Fat such a distance apart as the space between the sash and casing may require. The pawl J is then turned up to bring its engaging end into contact with the side rail of the upper sash, (J, or with the ratchet-plate K, attached to the said side rail.

With this construction an attempt to raise the lower sash or lower the upper sash will force the fastener to hold the said sashes more firmly.

If desired, points N may be attached to the outer side of the plate E, to enter the casing A, and thus assist in holding the fastener from slipping upon the said casing.

The fastener may also be used for holding a sash in place when raised by inserting the plates E F between the lower end of a side rail of the raised sash and the easin g, so that the said sash cannot be lowered without removin g the fastener. Thefastener can be removed by turning the screw G to draw the upper ends of the plates E F toward each other, and thus release the said fastener from pressure.

To adapt the fastener to be applied at either side of the window, I formfour holes in the upper partof the plate E, so that the pawl J can be adjusted to swing in either direction, and in one of the upper holes in the said plate is placed a hand-screw, O, the head of which can be turned against the pawl J to lock it in place and prevent it from being raised by a knife or other implements inserted between the sashes.
