9 claims, (CL2- 18) The invention relates to' the structure of n a boxing glove., and particularly to a boxing glove having a pneumatic 'stuilng.-
An object of the invention is to provide a, boxing glove of the pneum-atically stuffed type which permits the shaping of the same into a st-without appreciable resistance.
Another object is to provide a' boxing glove-in which the shock of a blow against any striking.v
n point of 'its exterior is uniformly dispersed through and substantially absorbed by the A further, and more specic object, is to provide for ther use of a plurality of mutually free globate stung members which are Vresiliently 1 yielding l under deforming impacts. f v
The invention possesses otherobjects and features vof advantage; some of Which,-withthe foregoing, will` be set `forth or beapparent in the following description of atypical embodiment of the invention, and inthe accompanying drawf' ings, in which,
Figure 1 is anv external side viewof aleft-hand boxing glove embodying the featuresv of present invention, the glove :being in unclenched condition. w 1 -v Figure'Z is a longitudinalsection of the glove taken centrally through'its linger-mitt portion.
Figure 3 is a sectionl of the gloveratv the line 3--3 in Figure 1 f Figure 4 is an enlarged central section through a hollow ball comprising a stuflng element of the glove.
As particularly illustrated, the features of present invention arefincorporatedfin the structure of a boxing glove 6 comprising an inner portion providing aA hand-receiving mitt having linger stall and thumb stallvportions 1 and 8 respectively, extending from `a wrist portion 9; the nger stall portion-1 providesy a cavity .I0 receivingy al1 four fingers While the thumb' stall within the loop of the iingers when a'hand in the mitt is formed intofa list.Vv -1 ffr- I Pockets or casings I5 and'IS 'and Ill-are pro'- videdi'opposite and outwardly of the finger-'stall and thumb-stall and' wrist-receivingportions oi the mitt forfreceiving'stufng as` a protection for the back of la hand and the wrist, with the glove at'outer Walls of said pocketsv respectively comprisingpiecesl and I9 and 2I of flexible and generally air-tight sheet material such as leather or fabric. The various .edgesv of" said upocketforining piecesare `secureddirectly to the mitt assembly except where-*the finger-and thumb pocketsjoin, the'edges'of 'thepieces I8 and IS being yfixed together'atfsaid pocket juncturein a line which extendsbetween spaced-'points of the mittand is Aarched away from themitt por-'- tionbetween'the points; the Docketsx'l and 'I6 thus being 'connected asf'one for 'smiling-'receiving Purposes. Y i
The'connected-pockets YI5 and I6 vare filled to capacity'with a'plurality of'globate and resiliently deformable members 22 of the same size/while they pocket`|1 may be lledwithfsimilar' globate members2`3 kofa smaller size than the vmembers 22,V it'being noted 4that the generallyr C-shape'd 'wristlencircling'pock'et Il is'relatively thin as y compared with the pockets I5 and I6. Whiiethe 1 opposite the'ng'er-'stall portion ofthe clenched l.glove where impacts'are greatest during a boxing use of the'glove; the arrangement is generally provided with a longitudinal slit 'extendingfrom the wristend of the gloveefor its opening. .thereat to facilitate the insertion of a boxr's hand'in'they glove, the edges of the slit I2 being arranged for drawing togetherin a usual manner by means of lacing I 3 to secure the gloveon the inserted hand. The palm ofV the presentv mitt mounts anelongated grip'member I4 extending lacross it adjacent the'closed outer end of the cavity 9 in such a position that it may be enclosed and grasped 'such'that no ball cont-acts the outside wall of'a `pcicletat, more than onevpoint, and some balls contact only other-balls in the pocketv at the striking Zoneof'the glove.r y It will Abenoted thatthe usof globate stuning members 22 ink the `'stuiling-receiving pocket I5-I6 of the present glove structure permits a clenching and openingf ahand andthe enclosing glovewithout undue resistance bythe stuffing, this Yby reasony of thepermitted vfree movement of the ball members Ytol 11e-arrange themselves for the changed shape vof the stuied pocket. Also, when the stuffed glove is clenched, 'ai blow v stl thev presentA stufng 'at any glove point Vw'illbe taken upbya deforming com'- pression of the outer stuiiing members and be distributed laterally and inwardly through the mass of members for absorbing the crushing force within the impacted body of stuing.
The present pocket I extends over the tip ci the flngervstall part of the mitt in the manner illustrated, and this pocket may be provided with vent openings 24 at its inner end opposite the ypocket l1 at the wrist line of the glove whereby a change in the space of the pocket, as when Va blow is struck or the pocket is resuming its normal form following the striking of a blow, will be permitted by maintaining a condition of atmos pheric pressure within the pocket.
pocket I6 for the thumb stall portion of the glove,v
being, in the present instance,'connected with,
the pocket l5, shares the venting Yfeature with it. Vent holes 25 are provided I1 at the wrist of the glove for dition of latmospheric pressure therein, the stuff# ing of this pocket being more apt to receive than to give blows; the members 23 in this pocket are generally smaller than the membersz in order to interpose a suilicient shock-absorbing number of them between the inside andoutside walls of the pocket.
It will now be noted thatthe present'lhollow ball members 22 and 23 are'provided with ref stricted openings 2-6 through which air maypass as a ball is compressed or asan impact-deformed ball resumes its normal globate form by reason of the resiliency of the material-lof, which'it is made. The holes 2S 0f the balls 22 and 23 are preferably of such sizes with respect to the ball cavities that they appreciably retard theescape of air as the balls are deformed'by the relatively sharp impacts of boxing against them, yet perfor the stuiling pocket e' maintaininga conpadding opposite 4 enclosed inthe casing and cooperatively providing a compressedly yielding padding for the glove.
3. In a boxing glove, a flexible outer casing of air-tight material provided with vent openings `at its back, and a vplurality of resiliently elastic gl-obate bodies enclosed in the casing in mutually ree and contacting relation 4to cooperatively provide a compressedly yielding padding for the glove.,
e. In' a bzoxirigglove,1 a flexible casing member cooperative with the glove to denne .a space for .an outer face of the glove, and a plurality of resiliently elastic ball members retainedly disposed in `the space in relatively free and lmutually contacting relation and comprising the padding forthe glove.
`v5. In a boxing glove, a flexible outer casing for a glove part, and ak plurality of resiliently elastic hollow ball members enclosed in the casing in mu- -tual contact for cooperatively providing a c0mpressedly yielding padding for the glove.
. 6. In a'bcxing glove, afilexible'outer casing, and a plurality of hollowqball membersfoi'resiliently yielding material enclosed. inthe casing in conmit a, return ow of air into their interiors at the 1 rate required for a resumption of their normal shapes by reason of their resiliency; in this manner, a deforming impact is passedvonfrom Vball to ball. -V
'Ille use of the described globate stuffing members permits 4a high degree of predeterminartion of the effectiveness of a stuiiingmade up of balls in the various pockets, and thus provides a vboxing glove structure which may` offer amaximum degree of protection to the hand of .a-:bcxerusing it. The present glove structure, was originally designed for use in exercising and `for/training for boxing matches, but is also adaptable foruse in boxing contests by providing a stuingofvball members which cooperatively provide an approved hardness for ythe strikingzcne of the glove.
From the foregoing description, taken' in con,.- nection With the accompanying drawings, the advantages of .the construction and use of the present boxingv glove will be readily understood by those skilled in the :art to which the invention .appertains. While I have described theI features and use of anarrangement which I now consider a preferred embodiment of my invention, I desire to have it understood that thevshowing isprimarily illustrative, and lthat such changes iand developments maybe made, when desired,l as ,fall within the scope ofthe following claims.
1. `In a boxing glove, a flexible outer casing, and a plurality of re-silien-tly elastic and relatively unattached members enclosed in the casingin mutually free and contacting relation and cooperatively providing a com-pressedly yielding padding for the glove. v
