Application June 20, 1945, Serial No.v 600,539'
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in drill press vises embodying means for holding the work to be drilledl rmly without the tedious use of jigs, clamps and similar devices.
An important object of the present invention is to provide a vise of this character embodying coacting jaws movable relative to each other by individual jack screws by means of which either of the jaws may be actuated while the other jaw remains stationary, or by means of which both of the jaws may be simultaneously actuated.
A further object of the invention is to provide means for swingably mounting the jaws about a vertical axis in order to facilitate the operation of the vertical spindle of a drill press in drilling long material held in clamping engagement by the jaws.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character of simple and practical construction, which is efllcient and reliable in use, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a top plan View.
Figure 2 is a side elevational view.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary longitudinal sectional View taken substantially on a line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary top plan view of the base for the vise.
Figures 5, 6, and '7 are transverse sectional views taken respectively on the line 5-5, 6--6 and 1 1 of Figure 3.
Figure 8 is a top plan view of one of the sliding bars carrying the vise jaws.
Figure 9 is a bottom plan view thereof, and
Figure 10 is a bottom plan view of one of the Jaws.
Referring now to the drawings in detail wherein for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention the numeral 5 designates a base generally which includes a central longitudinally extending bar E and having wings I projecting laterally at opposite sides of the intermediate portion of the bar, each of the wings being formed with longitudinally extending portions 8 spaced from the adjacent sides of the bar 6. The wings 1 and ex- 1 claim. (c1. 4sii- 33) j tensionsl 8 form base plates in the plane of the i. fi
Lugs II are formed onA the underside of the wings 'I to receive bolts or the like I2 by which the base may be attached to said drill press.
Eachend of the bar 6 is formed with a longitudinally extendingT-slot I3 and an intersecting transversely extendingkeyway slot I4. The side edges of the bar 6 are formed with longitudinally extending grooves I5.v l f An internally threaded collar I6 is formed with a downwardly extending T-shaped extension I1 slidably mounted in the T-slot I3 and retained therein by a key I8 in the slot I4. See Figures 3 and 6.
A screw I9 is threaded through the collar I6 and is provided with a head at its outer end through which a crank handle 2l extends transversely and is secured in adjusted position by means of a set screw 22.
A sliding bar 23 is formed with inner and outer end walls 24 and 25 and recessed at its underside to form a longitudinally extending groove 26 for receiving the screw I9. See Figures 8 and 9. The outer end wall 2-5 is held slidably engaged to a flange 21 on the head 20 of the screw I9 by means of screws or the like 28 and a shoe 28. See Figure 3. One of the sliding bars 23 is provided for each end of the bar 6 and each sliding bar is moved longitudinally at the respective ends of the bar 6 by means of the screw I9 and handle 2|, the screw traveling in the stationary collar I6.
The side edges of the sliding bar 23 adjacent its inner end are formed with inturned flanges 29 slidably mounted in the grooves I5 at the sides of the bar 6.
The inner end of the sliding bar 23 is curved as indicated at 30 and is formed with kerf 3l at its lower portion in which a correspondingly curved rib 32, Figure 10, on the lower inner edge of a jaw 33 is seated for horizontal swinging movement of the jaw at the inner end of the sliding bar 23.
A plate 34 extends rearwardly from the upper portion of the jaw having an arcuate slot 35 formed therein for receiving an upstanding stud 36 threaded in the top of the bar 23 adjacent its inner end. A clamping nut 31 is threaded on the upper end of the stud 36, the nut having a cross bar 38 extending therethrough for threading the .nut downwardly to clamp the plate 34 in its swingably adjusted position on top of the sliding bar 23. Accordingly, the jaws 33 at the inner ends of the respective bars 23 may be swung about a vertical axis on the upper surface of the base 5 to clamp therebetween work positioned at an angle on the table of a drill press.
In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear understanding of the construction, operation and advantages of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary. f
It is to -be understood, however, that eve though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention it is to be understood that minor changes in the details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to `without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
