SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 244,588, dated July 19, 1881.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY GRABAOH, of Clyde, Sandusky county, Ohio, have invented an Improvenientin Shoes, of which the following is a specification.

The invention consists in a counter-stifi'ener arranged on the inside of the'ordinarj lining of the counter and fastened to the latter in order to avoid the wrinkling and wear of the lining. The stiffener is ordinarily placed between the counter and its lining, being stuck and not fastened at thetop, so that the lining is often worn th rough and the heel allowed to catch on the stiffener and thereby break it down; but even before this occurs the lining settles down, becomes wrinkled, and is very disagreeable to the wearer.

In the drawing, a shoe is exhibited in side elevation, the rear part being in section to show my improvement.

A represents the'stifiener of the shoe B; and O the usual lining, which, in this instance, is

' stitched to the upper edge of the counter, while the stiffener A covers its other face and is also stitched or otherwise secured to the upper portion of the counter, thus inclosing the lining between the stifl'ener and the counter where it is protected from wear and prevented from wrinkling. 1
