jz m m /137 N. PETERS. Photo-Lithograph, Wnhingtm ma UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEO JOSEPH BROWNBEAGH AND HENRY BERRY, OF BIRMINGHAM, CONN.
COMBINED SPOON-HOLDER AND CALL-BELL.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 244,527, dated July 19, 1881.
7 Application filed May 28, 1881. (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JosEPH BROWNBEACH and HENRY BERRY, of Birmingham, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticnt,l1ave invented anew and valuable Improvement in Combined Spoon-Holders and Call- Bells; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked there- Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a perspective view, partly broken away. Fig. 2 is a sectional view, and Figs. 3 and 4 are enlarged detail view..
This invention relates to improvements in articles for table use; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement under the base of a spoon-holder of an alarm-gong, and in connection therewith of the hammer-lever and its fulcrum, spring, and stops, all as hereinafter set forth.
Many articles of tablefurniture have been made with alarm devices connected therewith; but the arrangement has generally been more or less cumbersome, detracting from the appearance of the piece as an object of table use. At the same time the gong has been so placed that an unintentional call is liable to occur.
In the annexed drawings, the letter a represents a spoon-holder having the bowl b, stem 0, and convex base at, supported on feet 6, said base being provided with openings arranged in a circle near its lower edge, one opening being much larger than the others, as shown.
Projecting out radially from stem 0, just above the base d, is a stud, f, having a hearing, g, and shoulder h. Upon the bearing portion or fulcrum g of this stud is the tubular bearing 70 of the striker-rod, Z. This bearing has at its end, where it abuts against shoulder h, a notch, a, in which is caughtthe free end 19 of a'spring, g, which is seated between the fulcrum and bearing is, and is confinedin the latter. The operation of this spring is to accelerate thedownward movement of the hammer end of the strikinglever. The latter is held in engagement with the stud by means of a nut or head, '1". 4
The stem cof the holder passes down through the convex base, and where it protrudes below there is attached to it a bell-metal gong, 8, disconnected otherwise from the holder. The lower end, t, of the striking-lever is bent at an angle to extend over "the opening a, and is provided at its end with a knob, v. The opening a being on a diameter of-the base and the plane of the striking-lever to one side thereof, the bend in the latter brings the knob into proper position to effecta stroke in a direction normal'to the surface of the gong. I
At the side of stud 3 toward the knob, and immediately under the striking-lever, there is secured to the base (1 a wire stop, to, which is adapted to engage a stop, :10, formed on the circular flange y of bearing 7:, with the edge of which the stop w is in contact as the striking-lever is moved for the call.
The flange protects'the stops and prevents them frombeing especially noticeable.
As pressure is applied to the finger-piece a the knob 27 is raised and spring q compressed. As soon as the rod is released this spring throws the knob into sharp contact with the gong s, the stops w and a coming. in contact, and the resiliency of the rod allowing the knob to strike. The stops are so arranged that after the stroke the rod springs back to its normal tensionand the knob is lifted from the gong, allowing the latter to vibrate and sound. What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
. A combined spoon-holder and call bell con- JOSEPH BROWN BEACH. HENRY BERRY.
