3 Sheets-Sheet Filed June .1, 1945 ATTORNEYS Patented July 13, 1948 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE uomzti zlusza I 601813118- (Cl-ZZHSZ) My present invention, in its broad aspect, has reference to improvements in liquid dispensing dispensers of the type having a container for the liquid to be dispensed and a removable closure cap which is a part of and supports my improved liquid dispensing device. More particularly, it is my purpose to provide a liquid dispenser formed with a cap part in which the valve is mounted to open and close both an air inlet and a liquid outlet leading respectively to a liquid outlet tube and an air inlet tube; the operating structure of the valve being located between the liquid outlet tube and the air inlet tube to be handily operated, and these tubes coming together at a point where provision is made for detachably connecting a nozzle which also has a liquid outlet and an air inlet conduit registering therewith. I also provide air venting means in the air inlet in case the same should become flooded by the liquid or otherwise clogged, and the operating mechanism for the valve is simple, sturdy, dependable and practical, and means are provided for holding the valve in open position against the tension of a spring closure means.
Other and equally important objects and advantages of my invention will be apparent from the following description and drawings, and it is pointed out that changes in form, size, shape, materials, and construction and arrangement of parts is permissible and within the purview of my broad. inventive concept and the scope of the appended claims.

In the drawings wherein like characters of reference are used to designate like or similar parts throughout the several views:
The numeral I designates a liquid container of the type having a threaded open top 2. My dispensing device is attached to and forms a covering for the container 1 and has a circular base 3 with an internally threaded annular flange 4 which is attached to top 2 as shown in Figures consists of a circular plate l0 and a circular leak-proof washer l I held on the stem by a screw l2. The valve head is of suflicient diameter to close the outlet to the nozzle and to close the end l3 of an air inlet tube l4 leading into the container through the base. The tube is spaced from the nozzle throughout a major part of its length and is then bent toward the nozzle as at l5 and leads into an air inlet conduit l6 formed in the end of the nozzle adjacent its bore. The tube has an opening I! adjacent the base, normally closed by a spherical valve head IS on the pivoted lever l9 which is carried by the arms of a bracket 20 and is provided with a spring 20a to normally hold the valve closed unless pressed on the end 2|. The purpose of the opening I! and valve I8 is to relieve the air inlet in case it becomes fllled with liquid or becomes clogged for any reason.
The boss 5 has a circular cavity 22 in which is packing 22a, to prevent leakage about the valve stem 8. A coil spring 23 about the valve stem and seating in the cup 24 fixed on the end oi! the valve stem and normally holds the valve closed. and a rotatable latch plate 25 mounted on the attaching screw 26 at the end of the stem and engages in notches 21 in a web 28 on the spout to hold the valve open. The latch plate has a handle 29 and a notch 30 to permit movement of the valve from closed to open position. A stop lug 3| on the end of the latch plate limits its rotatable movement.
The end of the spout is formed with a threaded annular flange 32 against which bears a leakproof washer 33--see Figure 8-to attach a nozzle 34 removably thereto. The nozzle also has an air inlet 35 and a fluid outlet, and has a stop flange 36 to prevent disengagement of a threaded knurled coupling collar 31 for couplil'lg the nozzle to the spout. n the nozzle 34 is adjustably mounted a stop or rest plate 38 having an end flange 39 and mounted by the screw 40 whereby to contact and support the nozzle in a filler opening (not shown) while filling a receptacle or the like from the container.
As shown in Figures 9, 10, 11 and 17, my device may be used without a valve in which case the nozzle 4| is formed with a side enlargement 42 from end to end containing the air inlet conduit 43. Both the air inlet conduit 43 and the fluid outlet bore are tapered as at 44 to the end of the nozzle and the end is circular and threaded as at 45 to receive a closure cap 46. The base 41 has an internally threaded flange 48 to engage the threaded mouth of the container. An elongated plate 49 has a slot 50 through which the screw is engaged to attach and adjust the same on the nozzle. and the plate'has an end flange 52 to form a stop or rest to support the nozzle when filling a receptacle (not shown) from the container 1.
From the foregoing, it is believed that the operation and advantages of my invention will be apparent, but it is again pointed out that interpretation of the scope of my invention should only be conclusive when made in the light of the subjoined claims.
I claim:
1. A liquid dispenser, comprising an open mouthed liquid container, a dispensing device removably attached to the container over its mouth and having a base constituting a cap for the container, a liquid outlet nozzle on the base, an air inlet tube mounted on the base and leading into an air inlet conduit at the end of the liquid outlet nozzle, and a valve closure for the liquid outlet nozzle and the air inlet tube, said valve closure provided with means normally holding the valve in closed position, and means for holding the valve in open position, a portion of the length of the air inlet tube being spaced from the liquid outlet nozzle and the actuating means for the valve being located between the air inlet and the liquid outlet.
2. The invention as defined in claim 1 wherein the valve has a stem supporting a cup and a spring bearing against the cup and base to hold the valve closed, and the valve having a circular head and sealing gasket both located in the mouth of the container.
3. The invention as defined in claim 1 wherein the means for holding the valve open includes a notched plate having a handle, and pivoted on the stem to engage the plate in notches on a rib on the nozzle to hold the valve open, or to register the notch on the plate with the rib to permit closing of the valve.
4. The invention as defined in claim 1 wherein the air inlet has a supplementary vent to relieve congestion in the air inlet in the event of clogging, and a valve for the vent.
5. The invention as defined in claim 1 wherein a spout having an air inlet and fiuid outlet is removably attached to the nozzle.
6. A liquid dispenser comprising an open mouthed container, a dispensing device removably mounted over the open mouth and having a base formed with a threaded flange to engage the threaded mouth of the container, a fluid outlet nozzle formed on the base, an air inlet tube leading into the container through the base of the nozzle formed at the end with an air inlet conduit with which the tube is connected, a closure means including a spring-pressed valve for the nozzle and tube, means for holding said valve open including a plate pivoted on the stem of the valve and engaging the nozzle, an auxiliary air inlet on the air inlet tube, and means for opening the closure means.
