Description

July 13, 1948. M. J. MANDELBAUM MATTRESS TURNER Filed Sept. 28, 1946 INVENTOR Patented July 13,
UNITED STATE 7 This invention relates to beds.
of this invention A principal object Application September 28,1946, Serial No. 700,113
is to provide a device to facilitate the reversal from side jtoside or'from end to end of a mattress of an ordinary well-known bed.
Other objects and advantageswill appear as the description of the particular physical embodiment, selected to illustrate the invention progresses and the novel larly pointed out in In describing the features will be particuthe appended claims. invention in detail and theparticular physical embodiment selected to'illus- 'trate the invention, accompanying drawing thereon, in which like characters of reference reference will be had to the and the several views designate like parts throughout the several views,

an ordinarybedstead and 2 designatesarr ordinary and well-known form of spring of the so-called box form resting in place bedstead as is usual.
For-the-purposes of m sary to have having one leaf thereof on the y invention it is necesa device simulating an ordinary hinge secured to the spring structure 2.. In my preferred form I employtwo hinges 3 and 4. Each leaves, one leaf appropriate manner preferred form, as shown the pintle of an ordinary ,by a wire 6 which may pass hinge has, in ffect,';two 5 is attached in any suitable or to the box spring 2. In-my in cross section in Fig. 3, hinge is substituted around the sides and positioned on 6 Claims, (01. 55-323) "box spring covering-the leaf 5 and being attached "thereto in anysuitable or appropriate manner as by sewing.
The other projections as leaves of the springs are preferably 8 depending from a complete metal band 9 passing around both sides and the ends of the mattress. This metalband 9 is apertured in substantially the center of both sides and at 'both endsand at each of these apertures there is a pin, as liLshown in detail in Fig. 5. Each of these pivot pins has an enlarged head as at i l,' a reduced shank as at 12, and passing through a throughbore I3 in the band 9 is then enlarged as at M to form a hand grip. The collar 30 is the shank 12 of the pin ID. This collarfjust fits within the through orifice iii of the band 9. Between the end of the collar 30 and the shoulder i5 which serves to keep is the compression spring l8 pin ill in the outward left hand position within the mattress as'shown particularlyin Fig. 5.= This is accomplished'by slotting theshank [2 as at 3| and passing through the slot and the collar 30 the" cross pin ll. This two ends of the spring and may be drawn tightly enough so asto remain in place, and act as "a pintle for both hinges 3 and 4, .One of the leaves ,,5' of each. hinge V is preferably hidden within. the l interior of thespring'2. thet'opcovering l of the 'thelhand grip the pin against the spring Hifrom sothat by grasping the hand grip M the slot 20 and then the pin is pivoted by means as 2|; and then headed.
just below the end pivots through the band 9, as
- Fig.1, but if the hand tab the-inside surfaces of IQ, so that by graspin l0 may be withdrawn I the orifice in theclasping member 21 and the mattress 25, but the crosspin bears against the band 9 as at I8 and spring will normally keep the enlarged end II in place'in the clasping member 21 in the mattress 25. The band 9 is formed not only with the through bore l3 but also with a through slot 20 which extends both below and above the bore l3 pin l0 may bring the cross pin ll in line with 10, together with its associated parts, may be withdrawn entirely. At each end of the band 9 another through bore isformed in the band as at 2| and the eX- treme end of a somewhat U-shaped member 22 of a member .23 passed through the through bore,
be rotated to through its end and 22 is preferably pivoted of the mattress passing shown in Fig, 4 and also in Fig. 2. This U-shaped member is of such dimensions thatwhen the mattressis in place on the box spring, as shown in Fig. 1, it'will lie close toand parallel to-the band 9, as-well shown in 24 is grasped and the mattress lifted on hinges} and-4. the U-shaped member'22, which- I will call a stiff leg or ele- TheU-sh'aped member vatedmattr'ess supporamay be moved, into the position as shown by Fig-4,
resting on the spring iWhat'I V Letters Patent of the United States is: l. A"device'for facilitating thereversal of a 3 2" and will support the mattress 25 at an angle to the box spring 2, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4. When the mattress is in the position, as shown by Figs. 2 and 4, it may be readily reversed either Fig. 4 I have shown the end pivots ID as being withdrawn and then the mattress 25 may be pivoted upon the side pivots l0 so as to be reversed end for end,
In order to best support the mattress when piv:
otin on the pins ill, I provide a strengthenin mattress, in combination: band passing around both sides and both ends of a mattress, a. hinge connecting the band with a box spring; said band orificed at four places, one at one end, one at the other end, one at one side and one at the other side; pivot pins passing through the orifices in the band and into the mattress whereby the mattress may be pivoted for reversal upon each pair of oppositely lying pins; a mattress clasping member claspin'gl the mattress at the location of each of the orifices in the band, the said clasping member formed with an orifice through which a pivot i pin may pass; means to hold the band and "mattress in lifted position so that it is free to means such as a resilient metal clasping member,
27. One of these is positioned at each of the ipointstwhere-a pin enters the mattress, as clearly shown in Fig 3, and designated 2'1. Theseniattress pin supports may be attached to the mattress by any appropriate means, but I prefer to make-them of somewhat springy metal and have the endsras 225: and 29" spring over the top and bottomof the mattress and so be self-retaining in 7 place. 0
.It will beeunderstood from the foregoing de- 7 scriptionthat I have provided a means whereby an: ordinarymattress may be manipulated by a very frail woman so as to be reversed side for side and end for end It is further to be observed that when the mattress is in the elevated position as shown in Fig.4 it can; be very much better aired than in the flat position as shown in Fig. 1. In: addition when themattress is in the elevated position it maybe used as a support for the sheets and blankets during theairing process. Sheets and blanketswhen thus exposed are much better aired and, furthermore, it is not necessary to drape. them on chairs and over furniture and drag themalonga dusty fioor so that they will keep cleanmuch longer.
. It, is contemplated that box springs and accompanying mattress may be equipped with my invention. merely. by'supplying the necessary. new
parts. These'are. allsuch that they may be readily attached to existing springs and mattresses. .Oneleaf; of the springs 3, and-4 may be readily inserted in a slitin the covering of. an existing mattress .and the wire b may. then be passed through, asa pintle, and around thev existing mattress .to hold thehingesin place. The band 9, together with thestifi leg 2 2, may .be applied to. the existin mattress merely byplacing four of the clamp mattress pin supports 21 on the mattressigat the a propriate place sothatit is possible .ior. owners of existing box springs ,and mattresses toegnipthemwithtmy invention. v Although-I have illustrated and described the hinges 3 and 4 as having one part integral with band 9, it is to be understood, that I do not mean tqthereby-exclude a, two leaf hinge, one leaf of the form selected is merely illustrative anddoes l p iexhaustthe possible physical embodiments of the .ideaof means underlying. my invention.
claim as new and desire-ito secure by which is integral with 9 but attached thereto, nor do, Lintend to exclude the use of one hingeonly at the side of the mattress.
,neverthelessI desire to haveit understood that turn.:
