Guide rods 43 and 44 are provided to keep the reciprocating yam guide 2| and guide bracket assembly 29 in perfect alignment during the yarn winding or cake-building operation, guide rod 48 being round and guide rod 44 being square in cross-section. Both of said rods may be integral with a normally stationary U-shaped platform bracket 45. Rod 43 is provided with a guide sleeve 48 fixed to plate 32. Rod 44 is not pro vided with a sleeve but merely slides in a square guide hole 41 machined in plate 32 which acts as a bearing. 'Traverse bar 28 is pivotally attached to plate 32 by means of a bracket 48 having a bolt 49 passing through said bracket and providing a pivot for traverse bar 28. Bolt 48 is held in position by a nut 58.
The fulcrummf'reciprocating traverse bar 28 is part of a shackle arrangement, generally indicated by reference numeral which is designed to cause funnel yarn guide 2| to reciprocate in a vertical path which is tangent to the normally arcuate path the yarn guide 2| would describe if not compensated for by the shackle arrangement 5|. The shackle arrangement comprises a pair of links 52 pivotally attached at their lower extremity by pins 53 to a bracket 54 mounted on an internally drilled and threaded block 55. Block 55 rides on a pair of cylindrical guide rods 56 which are attached to a bracket 51 by means of nuts 58. Block 55 may be shifted forward or backward to efl'ect any necessary or desirable adjustments in the length of the stroke of traverse bar 28 by suit-ably rotating a threaded rod or worm 59 which passes through block 55. A crank handle 60 is provided at one end of threaded rod 59 rotating freely in a bearing 5| set in bracket 51. Additional traverse adjustment means are provided at the end of traverse bar 28, said means comprising a sliding block 62 pivotally attached by a pin 83 to links 52, and sliding in a rectangular frame 54 attached to the end of traverse bar 28. Block 82 may be moved forward or backward inside the frame 64 through the action of a crank 65 which is, keyed to the end of a threaded rod or worm 66 passing through block 52 and rotating in a hole 81 in frame 84 which acts as a bearing for the end of worm 68.

The force of said spring may be counteracted to permit latch 13 to be disengaged from rod 14 by rocking a handle 16 in a counterclockwise direction. Handle 16 is connected to an eccentric bushing 11 and the movement of handle 18 in a counter-clockwise direction rotates bushing 11 suiiiciently to permit a spring guide pin or shoulder 18 on which eccentric bushing 11 bears to be pressed thereby to the left, releasing the spring pressure s'uiiiciently to allow latch 13 to be disengaged from rod 14. Upon release of latch 13, as shown in Fig. 6, the whole traverse bar assembly and yarn guide 2| rocks on parallel motion links 1| and 12 as well as on links 52 so that it is drawn upward and backward. This movement permits cover 88 to be removed and the loaded take-up bucket 22 to be lifted out'and replaced by an empty bucket. The yarn winding may be resumed by forcing traverse bar 28 and the-yam guide assembly downward, locking latch 13 on bar 14 by rocking handle 16 in a clockwise direction and dropping yarn in through funnel yarn guide 2| a suiiicient distance so that it will be caught'up by the take-up bucket 22 and wound into a yarn cake 21.
The advantage of our novel traverse mechanism lies in the fact that once the traverse stroke of funnel yam guide 2| has been adjusted as desired by rotating cranks 60 and 65, the yarn take-up bucket 22 may be filled and removed continuously through disengagement of latch 13 without any necessity for readjusting the traverse stroke of the yarn guide 2| at each discharging operation.
-It is to be understood that the foregoing detailed description is given merely by way of illustration and that many variations may be made therein without departing from the spirit of our invention.

In a yarn traversing device for building a, yarn cake in a yarn take-up bucket, the combination with a yarn guide directing a yarn into a rotating take-up bucket, of traversing means for vertically reciprocating the yarn guide including a pivotally mounted traverse bar carrying said yarn guide at the free end thereof, a rotating cam in contact with the underside of the traverse bar for raising said traverse bar on the upward stroke, spring means cooperating with said traverse bar for effecting the downward stroke, locking means including a spring-loaded latch for detachably securing said yarn guide and traverse bar in operative position, and means at the fulcrum end of said traverse bar including pivotally mounted links connecting a sliding block having a rotatable worm in said block with a second worm-operated sliding block disposed below the first mentioned sliding block, for varying the stroke of said yarn guide.

In a yarn traversing device for building a yarn cake in a yarn take-up bucket, the combination with a yarn guide directing a yarn into a rotating take-up bucket, of traversing means for vertically reciprocating the yarn guide including a pivotally mounted traverse bar carrying said yarn guide at the free end thereof, a rotating cam in contact with the underside of the traverse bar for raising said traverse bar on the upward stroke, spring means cooperating with said traverse bar for effecting the downward stroke, locking means including a fixed bracket carrying a spring-loaded latch, a pivotally mounted bracket linked to said fixed bracket having said yarn guide mounted thereon and said traverse bar pivotaliy attached thereto, means on said pivotally mounted bracket cooperating with said spring-loaded latch for detachably securing said bracket, yarn guide and traverse bar in operative position, and means at the fulcrum end of said traverse bar including pivotally mounted links connecting a. sliding block having a rotatable worm in said block with a second worm-operated, sliding block disposed below the first mentioned sliding block for varying the vertical stroke of said yarn guide.
