G. H. REYNOLDS. TEMPORARY BINDER.
No. 244,307. Patented July 12,1881..
ATTORNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE H. REYNOLDS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
TEMPORARY BINDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 244,307, dated July 12, 1881. Application filed April 2, 1881. (Model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE H. REYNOLDS, ofthe city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Binder for Periodicals, Pamphlets, tbc., of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved binder for temporarily binding pamphlets, periodicals, papers, Sto.
The invention consists in combining with a book-cover a stiffener having strips, flanged' plates apertured and attached to covers at each end, metallic strips that are passed into the folds of the papers, and a slotted studded tube rcarrying a spring-catch, as hereinafter described.
'In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is an inside elevation of my improved binder, showing it opened, but without pamphlets therein. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the end of the same, showing` it closed. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view ofthe same on the line m x, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a sectional elevation ot' the same on the line y y, Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The book-covers A A are united by a stift'- ened back, B, provided with a straight strip, C, on the inner side. Plates D, with a flange, E, along one edge, are attached to the top and bottom of the back B and its straight inside strip, C, in such a manner that the an ged edge will project beyond the s'trip C a short distance, the flanges E projecting toward each other, as shown in Fig. 4. The projecting parts of these plates D are provided with a row of apertures, F F, between the flange E and the straight strip (l. The right-hand sides of the plates D are connected by a strip, G, which projects from the strip C about the same distance as the plates D. Metal or hard-rubber strips H, having a length equal to the distance between the plates D, are passed into the folds of the papers J, magazines, pamphlets, &c., that are to be bound, as shown in Fig. 3, and the projectin g ends of these strips are passedin between the iianges E E and the strip G, as shown, the strip H that has been inserted first resting against the plate G. As many pamphlets as desired are Aheld in the binder in the manner shown, and the rest of the space on the inner side ot' the back of the binder is filled up with strips H. To prevent these strips from falling out from between the flanges E and the inner side of the back of the binder, aspring-clamp, K,is used. This springclamp consists of a tube or rod, K, with a stud, L, fitting into the apertures F F at the lower end, and with a sliding pin, M, provided with a handle or arm, N, projecting through alon- 6o4 gitudinal slot, O, in the tube K at the upper end, which pin M is pressed outward by a spring, P, in the tube K. The stud L is passed into one of the apertures F of the lower plate, D, and the pin M is snapped into the corresponding aperture F of the opposite plate D. The strips H are thus held in place. The pins or studs L and M of the spring clamp K can be passed into any aperture F of the plates D a greater or less distance from the ends of these plates.
To remove the pamphlets from the binder, the spring-clamp K is first removed, and to permit this the spring-pin M is first withdrawn.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the book-cover A B, provided with the stiftening C, having strip G, the flanged plates D, attached to covers at each end, and having apertures F, the strips H, and
the slotted studded tube L K, having springcatch MN, as and for the purpose specified. GEO. H. REYNOLDS.
