Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE W. MCVAY, OF WADESVILLE, WEST VIRGINIA.
SCRUBBING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 244,280, dated July 12, 1881.
' Application filed May 2, 1881. (Model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that l, GEORGE W. McVAY, of Wadesville, in the county of Wood and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new' and useful Improvements in scrubbing-Machines 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will en able others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this speciflcation, and in Which- Figure l is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a vertical section, and Fig. 3 is a plan or top view.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the gures.
My invention has for its object to facilitate the laborious operation of scrubbing floors; and to this end it consists in the detailed construction and combination of parts of a machine or apparatus which can be pushed over the floor to be scrubbed, and is provided with a water-bucket, a rotary reciprocating brush, and mechanism for operating` the same, substantially as hereinafter more fully .set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the annexed drawings, A are the posts or uprights of a wooden frame, at the upper end of which is a cross-piece, B, forming a bearing for the vertical shaft G, and another crosspiece, B', through the middle of which is inserted a set-screw, b. The posts A have rollers or casters a, at their lower ends, so that they end of the shaft. At the upper end or top of the shaft is a pinion, F, which meshes with the horizontal drive-wheel G, which is operated by a detachable lever or handle, H. The lower end of the machine, which rests upon the floor, is encircled by a detachable cylindrical shield or guard, I.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings, the operation of this machine, will readily be understood.
The bucket D is illed with suds or water, which escapes through the faucets or outlets in the bottom as occasion requires, and the operator, taking hold of the machine with his left hand, vibrates the lever H with his right, which works the brush upon the floor. The circular shield I prevents splashing, and by means of the set-screw b in the top part of the frame the degree of pressureof the brush against the floor is easily adjusted.
By removing the brush and substituting a churn-dasher and churn, the same apparatus may be used for churning when desired.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- The scrubbingmachine composed of the frame A B B', set on casters a, guard I, shaft O, having the pinion F and detachable brush E, drive-Wheel G, having handleH, set-screw b, and reservoir D, provided with the faucets d and central sleeve D', all constructed and combined substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and speciiied.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE W. MCVAY.
Witnesses:
EDWARD F. MUNGEY, JOSHUA M. TUSTIN.
