Patented May 11, 1948 PATENT OFFICE COMBINATION PRESSERFOOT AND GAUGE FOR- SEWING MACHINES David. Feigcnbamn, Brooklyn, NJ Y. Application November 16, I946, Serial No. 710,292
This'ainve'ntion relatesto aacombinationpresser foot and gauge for sewin'g, machines, hem, .seam or li-lreapparatus.
'Inwpractice it has been foun'd' desirable, inparticular-when usingrknown'capm'achines, 'to re- 7 duce'thenumber of sewing; operations on the band "materialto be applied'to the cape! hat body,,to'which band material lining and size strip are to be joined.
Inorder'to reduce these sewing operations and manipulations of' the work piece to a minimum, the present invention-proposes certain improvementsin presser foot structures; It is, therefore, oneof the primary objeotsof this inventi'on" to'provid-e'm'eans greatly facilitating adjustment; guidance and z'rdaptability of "the presser foot to the 'shape-and'dimensions (width) of the workpiece which is to'b'estitched or sewn. It-is another object of the present invention to provide means afiording 'simple construction and Yet, another object of the present invention" is-to'provide means permittin 'pivotal movement ofsaid gauge so as-to employ the same also as an additional or auxiliary presser foot piece, which'is kept under spring action.
Still a furtherobject of this invention is to provide means ensuing straightening out and retaining the workpiece in substantially flat condition Without regard to its thickness or serving as a' g'uide 'for one of the-edges ofsaid work piece. 40 With the above and other objects in view, theinvention will be hereinafter more particularly described and the' combination and arrangement of parts willbe shown in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims which 45 form part of the specification.
Reference willnow be had to the drawings 'wherein' like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, infwhich: I
ingma-ch'ine' equipped withfia presser foot and gaugedevice'made in accordance with this invention.
9 Claims. (Cl. 112-235) parallel 'sliding'movem'ents of thegau'geor like 50 Fig. 1 shows in perspective a portion'of a sew-* gauge device made in accordance with this invention.
Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the device shown inFig. 2.
Fig. 4 isan end View'of the device of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a cross section taken along line 5-5 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 6 is a front elevational view of the device shown in Fig. 2. p I 1 Fig. '7 is a cross section taken along line 1-1 of Fig. 2.
Referring nowmore particularly to the drawings; Figs. 2 to 6illustrate a combination presser foot and gauge device I0 made in accordance with this invention. The gauge device includes a pivotally supported guide lever or auxiliary presser foot II and an extension or slide member I2.
Extension member I2 is arranged for sliding movement and extends on the upper surface I3 0 of the mai-npresserfoot M. The main presser foot is provided with a slot I 5 through which the needle Ifimoves for the sewing operation and has furtheran open slot II extending from the upper surfacelitoth'e bottom surface I8 of the main presser foot -portioni SlotI'I terminates in an end wall I'Ia. Lever I I is adapted for movement within slot I'I andnormally projects below the-surface IBofpresserfoot I4, as illustrated in dot-dashlines inFig. 4. Lever II carries a pin 0 I9 on which is removably and interchangeably disposed a spiral spring 20 which extends for abutment against an arm 2I. This arm 2| is perforated-at 2.2 topermit said pin I9 to project beyondar'm 2|. Lever orauxiliary presser foot Sdmember II is provided with the forward portion I Iwwithroundedend, with areduced rearward portion-Ho which terminates into a tongueshaped .portionllc. -Port'ion- IIb terminates in endlwall lie for contact and cooperation with endwall I'Ia.of.slot-l1.. Portion He is adapted toirestonandengage the upper surface of ex tensionmemben-H; as seen in Figs. 2-and 5.
. It can thus be seen that forward portion I Ia of lever can either be swung upwardly about tongue-shaped portionJ Ic against the tension of spring. (which maybe regulated in any known manner), or the forward portion IIa oflever it together with its portions Ilb, He can be pressed upwardly (while end wall He engages slot end wall IIa) against the action of said spring 20 to a position in which the lower edge 'I If is substantially in alignment with the straight bottom surface I8' of main presser foot portion III (Fig.4)
Fig. Zis'a top pla view of thetpresser foot'and .65 In the'presentinst'ance, presser foot I is provided with r. projecting portion or nose 23 which is U-shaped in cross-section and forms a lateral guide for the extension member l2, which is further guided by its engagement with a set screw 25 along slot 24.
Presser foot I4 has further an upwardly projecting guide portion 26 which is bent at 28 and carries a screw bolt 21 for attaching arm 2| to portion 25. Portion 26 of the presser foot extends above the latter and is so curved at 28 as to form an additional lateral guide for the forward edge or end 29 of extension member l2. Extension member I2 is further provided with a downwardly extending abutment flange or rim 30 which in retracted position of member l2 comes to lie flush with the bottom surface I8 It follows from the above disclosure, that according to this invention, there has been achieved a presser foot structure provided with a connection for the foot bar of a sewing machine, which structure consists of a main foot member with a substantially flat bottom surface, which has a lateral edge and also a slot directed substantially parallel to said lateral edge. The presser foot structure is further equipped with an auxiliary member accommodated for movement in the aforesaid slot and provided with a guide edge adapted to extend beyond said bottom surface of the main foot member; a
of presser foot |4 (indicated in dot-and-dash lines) In order to slide extension member l2 relatively to presser foot l4, all that is to be done is to loosen set screw and then to slide member l2 along guides 23 and 26 so that rim 30 extends beyond the lateral end 3| of presser foot I4.
Rim 3!] of member i2 is thus guided parallel to edge 3|, while the walls of slot 24 engage the stem 25a of set screw 25. Projecting portion 32 of slide member l2 will move underneath the lower surface of tongue-shaped portion lie of lever ll without interfering with of the spring supported lever l.
Presser foot I4 is further provided withan upwardly extending portion 33 equipped with a slot 34 for the engagement of a screw 35 pro- 7 the position vided on foot bar 36 of the sewing machine 31,.
(Fig. 1) whereby the presser foot and gauge de-' of the sewing operation during which the flat base surface |8 of the presser foot l4 retains the folded over portion 44 of the work piece 40 in position, while needle l6 carryingthe thread (not shown) moves through the closed presser foot slot I5. 7
If it is desired during further sewing operations, as it is often the case in cap machines, to attach or sitch size band and lining cover to the material of the hat body, work piece 40 may be guided along an auxiliary guide bar of a well-known auxiliary gauge .(indicated in dotted lines). Upon adjustment of auxiliary gauge itby means of slot 41 and set screw 48, as may be easily realized; slidable extension member l2 with its upwardly curved forward part |2a may be spaced from the lateral edge 3| of presser foot l4 and its curved forward part Ma and moved to a position in which flange 3D enlarges the bottom surface l8 of the presser foot and abuts against bar 45, thereby effectuating andaiding in the retention of the projecting work piece portion on platform 4| which work piece is guided alon bar 45.
.In such sewing operation, auxiliary presser foot member I I will recede to a position as shown in full lines in Fig. 4., in which said member permits transport of the work piece on the platform while-said member ll rides with relatively slight pressure on the work piece 40.
spring element is arranged to engage one end of said. auxiliary member for maintaining the latter in downwardly projecting position. ther attached to the presser foot structure is an extension member located on top of said main member and slidable thereon, said extension member including a flange adapted in one extreme position of said slidable extension member to lie adjacent said lateral edge and substantially flush with the bottom surface of said main member. This flange is spaced in another extreme position of said slidable extension member from said lateral edge and enlarges the bottom surface of said main member. The auxiliary member includes also a tongue-shaped end piece which lies on the top of said main member whereby said auxiliary member may be moved against the action of said spring element about said tongue-shaped end piecewithin said slot so as to cause said auxiliary member to assume a receding position in which said guide edge will be located substantially flush with said bottom surface of said main member to thereby obtain a substantially uninterrupted flat bottom surface.
It is further to 'be observed that the spring 20 may be easily adjusted as to its tension by any known means or may be readily replaced by another spring exerting an appropriate pressure on said auxiliary presser foot for application to the fabric or material to be worked upon.
In accordance with the above, it is well understood that deviations and changes may be made from the embodiment herein set forth without departing from the spirit of this invention.
