, 8 Claims. (c 123-97) This invention relates to a degasser for an internal combustion engine and is particularly internal combustion engine when the engine is being decelerated with the throttle closed. Venting air into the carburetor Jets cuts of! the flow of fuel into the intake manifold during such deceleration and the air admitted into the intake manifold mixes with the fuel present there to form a combustible mixture which completely burns in the engine and thus avoids undesirable discharge through the exhaust of an incompletely burned gaseous mixture.
It is the object of this invention to produce such a degasser which is of simple structure, eilicient and reliable in operation and easily installed on'the engine as original or accessory equipment.
The drawing shows a vertical section through my degasser assembled to the intake passageway.
The elements shown in the drawing are referenced as follows: intake passageway l, air inlet 2, fuel bowl 3, venturi 4, main fuel nozzle 5, idle jets 6, 1, throttle valve 8 of the butterfly type, valve shaft 9, crank I fixed on shaft 9, rod H by means of which throttle 8 is either manually or foot controlled, crank l2 also fixed on throttle shaft 9, rod l3 pivotally connected at one end to crank I2 and carrying valve l4 at its other end, engine intake manifold I 5, conduit l6 leading from port l1 in valve housing 16 to nozzle pipe l9, passageway 20 connecting idle jets 6 and 1 into line l6, valve cylinder 2|, port 22 connecting cylinder 2| to atmosphere, valve 23, circumferential grooves 24 and 25 in piston valve 23,
conduit 26 connecting cylinder2| with port 21 in intake passageway l, port 28 connecting cylinder 2| with atmosphere, flexible diaphragm 29, suction chamber 30, compression spring 3| between housing 32 and diaphragm 29, rod 33 connecting piston 23 with diaphragm 29, conduit 34 connecting suction chamber with conduit 35, orifice 38 through which conduit 35 communicates with atmosphere when valve l4 is open, conduit 31 connecting conduit 34 with orifice 36 in intake passageway i, valve housing 39 open to atmosphere through port 40, valve shaft 4| which is driven off the engine so that it rotates in accordance with the speed of the engine, circumferential passageway 42, T passageway 43 in shaft 4| continuously communicating with passageway 42 and with valve cylinder 44, centrifugally unbalanced valve 45, air bleed port 46 controlled by valve 45, bypass passageway 41 permitting air to flow from port 45 to passageway 43 when valve 45 is open, tension spring 48 tending to hold valve 45 open.
As shown in the drawing the engine is idling. At this time stopper or valve i4 holds air bleed port 36 closed, but since centrifugal valve 45 is arranged to close only when the engine is running in excess of some predetermined or desired speed, such as, for example, 800 R. P. M., air bleed port 46 will be open thereby bleeding atmospheric air through passageways-41, 43, 42, 35, 34 into chamber 30 so that spring 3| will hold piston 23 in the position shown. In this position piston 23 closes off ports l1 and 22 and also port 2:8 and conduit 26. Thus, no air can pass either into ihe intake manifold at 21 or to the fuel jets. through conduit l6. air passes to the manifold through orifice 38. If throttle valve 6 is now moved toward open position, the speed of the engine will accelerate. As soon as the speed of the engine exceeds 800 R. P. M. or whatever engine speed above idle at which valve 45 is set to close), valve 45 will close port 46 but in opening throttle valve 8 stopper valve I4 is moved off port 36 so that air now bleeds through port 36 into suction chamber 30 and piston valve 23 remains in the same position as shown.
Now if the engine is running at a speed sufliciently high to close valve 45 and throttle 8 is closed to idle or near idle position so that valve I4 closes port 36, then both air bleeds to suction chamber 36 are closed. Now the intake passageway vacuum on the engine side of valve 8 will establish itself in suction chamber 30 through conduit 38 and conduit 31. This vacuum will act upon diaphragm 29 and lift valve 23 so that circumferential grooves 24! will register with port 28 and conduit 26 to bleed air through port 21 into the intake manifold and groove 25 will register with ports 22'and I1 to bleed airthrough conduit l6 into jets 5, 6 and 1 thereby cutting off the flow of fuel through jets 5, 6 and 1. The air bled into the intake manifold through port 21 will intermix with any fuel left in the manifold upon closing of throttle 8 causing it to completely burn in the engine and thereby prevent obnoxious fumes from. being discharged through the exhaust pipe.
I claim: I
1. In an internal combustion engine having "an intake passageway and a throttle valve in said passageway, a port on the engine side of said throttle valve for admitting air into the intake passageway, a second valve controlling Only a small amount of for closing said air bleed whenever the throttle valve is in substantially closed position, and a speed controlled air bleed to atmosphere for said pressure actuated means arranged to close whenever the engine exceeds a predetermined speed whereby when both of said air'bleeds are closed said pressure actuated means actuates said second valve to open said port and admit air into the intake passageway on the engine side of said throttle valve.
2. The combination as set forth in claim 1 including a vacuum operated fuel jet for delivering fuel into the intake passageway, an air bleed for said fuel jet, valve means for controlling said'air bleed to the fuel jet, said valve means also being controlled by said pressure actuated means so that when both of said air bleeds to said pressure actuated means are closed said pressure actuated means responds to intake passageway vacuum and opens the air bleed to the fuel jet to stop the flow of fuel through said jet.
3. In'an internal combustion engine having an intake passageway and a throttle valve in said passageway, a vacuum operated fuel jet for delivering fuel into the intake passageway, an air bleed to atmosphere for said fuel jet, a second valve controlling said air bleed for said fuel jet, means actuated through changes of pressure in the intake passageway on the engine side of said throttle valve for imparting movement to said second valve, an air bleed to atmosphere for said pressure actuated means, means for closing said air bleed to said pressure actuated means whenever the throttle valve is in substantially closed position, and a speed controlled air bleed to atmosphere for said pressure actuated means arranged to close whenever the engine exceeds a predetermined speed whereby when both of said air bleeds to said pressure actuated means are closed said pressure actuated means actuates said second valve to open said air bleed to the fuel jet and stop the flow of fuel into the intake passageway.
4. In an internal combustion engine having an intake passageway and a throttle valve in said passageway, a port on the engine side of said throttle valve for admitting air into the intake passageway, a second valve controlling said port, means actuated through changes of pressure in the intake passageway on the engine side of said throttle valve for imparting movement to said second valve, a conduit connecting said pressure actuated means with the intake passageway on the engine side of said throttle valve, an air bleed to atmosphere for said pressure actuated means, means actuated in the opening andclosing of said throttle valve for closing said air bleed whenever the throttle valve is in substantially closed position and for opening said air bleed whenever the throttle valve is opened from idle position,
7 and a, speed controlled air bleed to atmosphere for said pressure actuated means arranged to close whenever the engine exceeds a predetermined speed whereby when both of said air bleeds are closed said pressure actuated means actuates said second valve to open said port and admit air into the intake passageway on the engine side of said throttle valve.
5. In an internal combustion engine having an intake passageway and a throttle valve in said passageway, a port on the engine side of said throttle valve, 9. second valve controlling said port, means actuated through changes of pressure in the intake passageway on the engine side of said throttle valve for imparting movement to said second valve, a conduit connecting said pressure actuated means with the intake passageway on the engine side of the throttle valve, an air bleed to atmosphere for said pressure actuated means, and a centrifugally unbalanced valve operated in accordance with the speed of the engine for closing said air bleed whenever the engine exceeds a predetermined speed higher than idle speed, a second air bleed to atmosphere for said pressure actuated means, and valve means for closing said second air bleed when the throttle valve is in idle position whereby when the throttle valve is in idle position and the engine is operating above a predetermined speed the said second valve opens and bleeds air into the intake passageway on the engine side of the throttle valve.

In an internal combustion engine having an intake passageway and a throttle valve in said passageway, a vacuum operated fuel jet for feeding fuel into the intake passageway, an air bleed to atmosphere for said fuel jet, a second valve controlling said air bleed to the fuel jet and arranged to close said air bleed whenever the throttle valve is substantially closed, means actuated through changes of pressure in the intake passageway on the engine side of said throttle valve for imparting movement to said second valve, a conduit connecting said pressure actuated means with the intake passageway on the engine side of the throttle valve, a second air bleed to atmosphere for said pressure actuated means, and a centrifugally unbalanced valve operated in accordance with the speed of the engine for closing said second air bleed whenever the engine exceeds a predetermined speed higher than idle speed whereby when the throttle valve is in idle position andthe engine is operating above said predetermined speed the pressure actuated'means opens said second valve and bleeds air to the fuel jet to thereby substantially stop the fiow of fuel through said jet.
7. In an internal combustion engine having an intake passageway and a throttle valve in said passageway, an air bleed port on the engine side of said throttle valve for bleeding air into the intake passageway, a vacuum actuated fuel jet for feeding fuel into the intake passageway, an air bleed to atmosphere for said fuel jet, valve means actuatable to simultaneously close said air bleeds or simultaneously open said air bleeds, a single means actuated through changes of pressure in the intake passageway on the engine side of said throttle valve for imparting movement to said valve means, a conduit connecting said pressure actuated means with the intake passageway on the engine side of the throttle valve, two separate air bleeds to atmosphere for said pressure actuated means, a valve operatively connected with said throttle valve for closing one of said two air bleeds whenever said throttle valve is in substantially closed position, and a centrifugally unbalanced valve operated in accordance with the speed of the engine for closing the other of said two air bleeds whenever the engine exceeds a predetermined speed higher than idle whereby when the throttle valve is in idle position and the engine is operating above said predetermined speed said valve means opens and bleeds air into the intake passageway on the 1 engine side of the throttle valve and bleeds air to the ifuel jet to stop the flow of fuel therefrom; 8. In an internal combustion engine having an intake passageway and a throttle valve in said passageway, a port on the engine sideot said second valve, an air bleed port to atmosphere for said pressure actuated means, a third valve for closing said air bleed whenever the throttle valve is in substantially closed position, means positively connecting said third valve to said throttle valve whereby said air bleed port co-acts with said connection to serve as a throttle stop for stopping the throttle valve in idle position when p said third valve closes said air bleed port, and
a speed controlled air bleed to atmosphere for said pressure actuated means arranged to close whenever the engine exceeds a predetermined speed whereby when both of said air bleeds are closed said pressure actuated means actuates said second valve to open said port and admit air into the intake passageway on the engine side MARION MALLORY.
