A. A. GLASSER BRASS IERE Filed Oct. 29, 1945 INVENTOR.
ITTY S.
Patented Apr. 13, 1948 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
1 My present invention has to do with brassires, having as an object the provision of a brassiere embodying novel, comfortable and efficient means for supporting the breasts without imposing any substantial part of their weight upon the body-encircling portion of the garment.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a brassiere which is particularly comfortable and eificient for nursing mothers.
An additional object is the provision of a brassire in which the body-encircling portions do not necessarily have to be tightly constricted about the body of the wearer, without affecting the desired support of the breast.
Still further objects and advantages will appear hereinafter.
Without intending thereby to limit the scope of my invention, except as defined by the accompanying claim, I shall now describe in detail a presently preferred embodiment, having reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is an elevational view of the brassiere in spread-out condition and as viewed from the inside;
Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 but showing the garment as being viewed from the front; and
Figs. 3 and 4 are enlarged fragmentary details.
Referring now to the drawings, I show generally at 5 a body-encircling portion of the garment consisting of breast-covering strips Ill shaped and seamed at M to provide breast cups IS, the strips ll] being secured together medially of the front portion of the garment by a seam 20.
Secured to the apex portion of each of the somewhat V-shaped breast-covering strips there is a looped strap 48 and shoulder straps 50 are provided, each being secured at its back end to one of the extension strips 25 and having at its front end portion a hook 49 engageable in loop 48. The hook 49 is slidably carried by the looped front end portion of the shoulder strap, the free end of the strap being secured to a slide buckle 41 of conventional construction which is slidable along the shoulder straps for adjustment purposes. Each of the shoulder straps has a front end extension 50a depending below its point of attachment to the breast-covering strip and disposed inside the garment.
For directly covering the breasts, I provide inside each breast-covering strip a soft fabric supporting element 60, each of the elements being stitched at 60a along its bottom edge only to the bottom edge portion of a breast-covering strip III on the inside of the garment. To the top corners of each element 60 are secured the outer ends of two longitudinally adjustable straps 65, the adjustability being effected by sliding the slide buckle. 10 carried thereby. The straps are disposed to converge towards each other at their top ends and are there secured to the shoulder strap extensions 50a. Each strap 65 is looped and passes at its looped end through an oval ring 66 secured on a tab 61 stitched to a corner of the element 60.
From the foregoing description it will be observed that the breasts are confined in the respective breast-supporting members 60, being supported independently of the body-encircling portion of the garment and any desired adjustment of the support may be effected by adjusting the buckles 10, 48. For nursing mothers the breasts are supported in accessible position by the members 60.
I claim:
A brassire comprising a body encircling member having a pair of breast-covering portions and having a pair of side extension panels attached to the outer ends of said breast-covering portions, a pair of four-sided substantially rectangular breast-supporting strips secured to the inner surface of said breast-covering portions along only their lower edges, said strips extending laterally at their lower edges completely across the breast-covering portions and being co-terminous at their lower edges with the lower edge of the brassiere, and means suspending the rectangular strips from the respective shoulder straps, the last-named means consisting of a pair of elongated straps for each strip, said straps being located entirely inwardly of said breast covering portions and each pair of straps being secured at their lower ends to the top corner portions of a strip and being secured at their other ends to a shoulder strap.
, ALBERT A. GLASSER.
