Application June 23, 1945, Serial No. 601,221
9 Claims. (01. 164-91) The invention pertains to an improvement in perforators for paper and the like characterized to a plane containing the axes of the spaced punches.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a perforator in which the operating means for the punches extends parallel to a plane containing the axes of the punches whereby the necessity of a largeclumsy base element is dispensed with.
Another object of the invention is to provide a perforator in Which'the supporting means for the levers, and the punches, as well as the cooperating die means associated with the punches is formed from a single piece of metal.
A still further object of the invention is toprovide a perforator having a pair of spaced punches and an operating lever for eachpunch in which the operating levers are so arranged relative to one another that they may be operated singly or in unison as may be desired.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a perforator in which the base or frame element is formed of a singlepiece of sheet metal.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a perforator having a one-piece frame struc ture which is so shaped as to provide astop element to determine the position of the perforations relative to the edge of the paper. V
With the foregoing objects in view, together with such other objects and advantages as may subsequently appear, the invention resides in the parts and in the combination, construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed, and illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawing, in which-- v v Fig. 1 is a front elevation partly in section of an illustrative embodiment of a perforator embodying the principles of my invention,
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of-the perforator shown in Fig. 1, and a Fig. 3 is a staggered-sectional,end elevation, taken generally along the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. .In general in the form illustrated, the base comprises a sheet "metal base member I of modified S-shape configuration, said base being provided with a pair of levers 2, 2 hinged at 5, 5 to opposite ends of the base and adjacent their hinge points, the levers engage the ends of punches 3, 3 guided in the base member I and normally held out of engagement with their cooperating die apertures by compression springs 4, 4 surrounding the punchesand extending between the base member I and. U-shaped collars 6, 6 on the punch members; each of said collars engaging grooves 6a, 6a on the punches and being held therein by the pressure exerted thereagainst by the springs 4, 4. The free ends of the levers extend downwardly through an opening I in the base member and thence are reversely bent to engage the opposite surface of the base member whereby the extent of their. outward travel induced by the springs 4, 4 and the punches 3, 3 is limited.
Referring now more specifically to the illustrated embodiment of the invention, the base member I comprises a piece of sheet metal bent into a modified S-shape and including a lateral run 9, at each end of which spaced tongue elements I0, I0 are downwardly and upwardly bent to form stationary hinge pin holding elements, a vertical run II, a second lateral run I2 disposed parallel to the run 9 and spaced therefrom, a second vertical run I3 and a third lateral run I 4 extending parallel to the lateral runs 9 and I2 and relatively closely spaced to the run I2. Extending in axial alignment through the lateral runs 9, I2 and I4 and adjacent the ends thereof are holes 9a, I2a and Ma and 91), I21) and lb which holes are of the same diameter. Slidably mounted in the holes 9a and I2a and 9b and IZb respectively are the punch elements 3, 3 surrounded by a compression spring 4, 4 extending between the surface of the run I2 and. the U-shaped collars 6, 6 hereinbefore referred to. As shown in Fig. 1 the collars 6b are so positioned on their respective punches that when the collars are in engagement with the face of the run 9; the ends of the punches will be positioned in the run I2 but will not protrude into the space between the runs I2 and I4." At the same time the opposite rounded ends of the punches extend through the run 9 to engage the operating levers 2, 2 each of which levers at one end is bent as at I5 to provide a means to engage hinge pins I6, It held in the holding elements Ill. The levers at their other ends are provided with rebent portions I1, I I which extend through the opening I in the run 9 and which rebent portions engage the surface of the run 9 to serve asstop means limiting their movement,
The holes Ma and 14b serve as the cooperating dies for the punches 4, 4,
In use, the paper is inserted in the slot formed by the lateral runs l2 and I4 until the edge engages the wall formed by the vertical run I3 and is then shifted sidewise until centered or other- Wise positioned after which pressure is applied to either or both levers with resultant production of one or two perforations, Preferably the punches will be spaced toaccommodate standard-filing devices but it will be appreciated that by the simple expedient of having the punches independently operable that other spacings can be achieved "or, where only a single perforation is required, that result can be had without the unnecessary punching of another hole or perforation as 'isthe case with perforators constructed'tomake two or more perforations simultaneously by manipulation of a. single means.
In this connection it is to be noted that the free ends of the operating levers are disposed sulficiently closely to'ea'ch other so that the finge'rof an operator cannot enter therebetween incident to the -simultaneousoperation thereof. Also since .theyare close'to eachother they'may be simulta- {I *neouslyoperated aseasil'y as'though only a'single lever were'involved.
Furthermore, attention is "again directed 'to the "fact that the levers are disposedp'arallel to a plane "containing the'axes'of the punches instead of being lateral thereto whereby a very narrow base element can be employed.
"Still further, itris to be noted that the frame 'element may-be convenientlyformed froma single substantially rectangular sheet of'meta-lformed's" :into a shape not requiring expensive tooling to :fabricate nor which involves'any 'wasteof material. Additionally, the other component part's'are of i equally simple design and are equally susceptib'le of economical manufacture.
While 'I have'shown anddescribed a specific em- I vbodiment of my-inventionpI do :not limitmyself to the exact details of constructionset forth, and the invention embraces "such changes, modifications and equivalents of the parts and their formation and arrangement 'as come, within the purviewof theappended claims.
