FARM-GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 243,339, dated June 21, 1881.
and to the letters and. figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a perspective view of a slidingand swinging gate embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view, on an enlarged scale, of the hanger; and Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the same.
The presentinvention has relation to certain new and useful improvements in that class of farm-gates adapted to slide horizontally and swing around at right angles to open the passage-way.
The invention consists in the peculiar construction of the hanger and manner of supporting the gate thereon, asillustrated in the drawings, and hereinafter described.
In the drawings, A represents the gate, of the ordinary form and construction, and B O the two outer posts. The post B has formed upon its inner side a vertical recess, a, to receive one endof the gate A when c1osed,thereby holding it stationary and from lateral displacement while engaged with said recess. The opposite post, 0, has connected toit, near its upper end, a flanged roller, 1), for supporting the upper rail, 0, of the gate, and also a latch, 01, is secured to the post, with which engages the rail 6. The flange on the roller 1) and the latch d hold the gate in the same horizontal line with the posts until raised sufficiently to disengage the rails with the roller and latch, when the gate may be swung around at right angles to its former position.
Between the posts B O is located a third post, D, which divides the space between the two end'posts into a passageway for vehicles and pedestrians. The post, near its upper end, has connected to it a right-angle arm, f, upon which rests the upper rail, 0, of the gate, and below this arm are connected to the post two Application filed May 2, 1881. (No model.)
pintles, g, a sufficient distance apart to receive the eyes h upon the rear side of the hanger E. This hanger is formed of a single piece of metal by being cast in a suitable mold in the ordinary manner, said hanger having upon its inner sides ways i, between which the journals of the roller is rest. The sides of the hanger E extend up above the periphery of the roller is to form guides [for the rail m of the gate, and project below to form guides at for the rail e, thereby not only steadying and guiding the gate on a horizontal line above the roller h, but below it, this being very important and essential in preventing too great a lateral strain on the hanger and the pintles.
Midway between the eyes h are flanges 0', which prevent the hangerE being disconnected from the pintles, without the hanger is in such position as to bring the space between the flanges on the same vertical line with the pintles. In this position the hanger may be raised off the pintles and the gate removed for repairs or other purposes.
It is important that some provision should be made whereby the gate will not become accidentally detached from the post D by the careless opening and closing of it, and at the same time in providing such means not to increase the cost in the construction of this class of gates. This, it is believed, has been successfully accomplished by simply providing the hanger with the flanges 4, arranged so that the space between them will come on the same vertical line with the holes in the eyes h. Should the gate A be swung around at an angle, however slight, the flanges r,if the gate is raised, would strike against the under side of the upper one of the pintles g, thus preventing the gate being elevated to such extent as would disengage the eyes h with the pintles g.
The eyes h, flanges 1', guides L a, and ways i are all cast and formed together in the same mold, thereby not increasing the cost of manufacture, and obtaining a very practical and durable, as well as efi'ective, hanger for farmgates.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
