1 Claim.
This invention relates to a novel means for the expeditious separable connection of a mop head and handle. I
It is generally aimed to simplify such a'con nection without sacrifice of durability and efficiency, to the end that the article may be manufactured inexpensively and expeditiously in large quantities with modern machinery.
More specifically, an object is to provide a novel means including a frame disposed in approximately a single plane which may be attached and detached by a threading action into and out of the retaining space provided between relatively close parallel webs, and which space is bordered by a ring or barrier which co-acts with a split ring or one element of the frame during the threading operation mentioned, and which permits relative rotation of the mop head and handle at all times so as to avoid undue strain of one such part on the other in use.
A further object is to provide the frame of such construction that it will sufiiciently reinforce the attached mop that the latter maybe may entirely of textile fabric or equivalent flexible material usually stitched together so that the cost of manufacture may be maintained at a minimum and the mop head may be easily washed. Additionally, an object is to provide the frame in the form of a split or discontinuous approximately annular wire having the terminals thereof slightly spaced apart and having a diametral portion continued from one of said terminals, and on which a handle socket is mounted, preferably pivotally.
Various additional objects and advantages will become apparent from a consideration of the description following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings illustrating an operative embodiment by way of example. In said drawings:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a connected mop head and handle attaching means according to the invention;
Fig. 2 is a view taken through the parts of Fig. l on substantially a diametral section, a portion of a handle proper being included;
Fig. 3 is a plan view showing the handle connection in connection with the mop head in the act of application of the former to the latter; and
Fig. 4 is a diametral sectional view through the same parts as Fig. 2 taken approximately at a right-angle thereto.
Referring specifically to the drawings wherein like reference characters designate like or similar parts, a mop head is shown at I0, which erally may be of any suitable construction. The strands or mop elements are shown at II, being of textile or equivalent material and the head also includes a pair of round disks or webs I2 and I3, also preferably of textile fabric or equivalent material, and which are connected together marginally only, as by the use of textile thread or the equivalent at I4.
Except for the line of stitching I4, which forms a ring or annular barrier, the webs I2 and I3 are unconnected and therefore provide a space between them as at [5 to accommodate a suitable handle connection which is adapted to be inserted and removed by the aid of an opening it provided in the web I3.
The handle connection is generally designated I I. It may consist of a frame provided by a metallic wire or other ring I8, Whose external diameter is the same as the internal diameter of the ring or barrier I4. Ring I8 is in one piece or split and at one terminal has a diametral arm I9. The distal end of the ring I3 is preferably slightly spaced from the arm I9 and returned or otherwise rounded as at 20 while the distal end of the arm I9 is preferably returned or otherwise rounded as at 2|. A socket or equivalent attaching means for a wooden or equivalent staff or handle 22 is shown at 23, being preferably attached to the arm I9 by means of a barrel 24 engaged with a slightly raised pintle portion 25 intermediate the ends of the arm l9. Socket member 23 may be of any suitable construction, preferably being formed or stamped in a single piece from sheet-metal, the barrel 26 being ini tially flat and thereafter curled about the pintle portion 25, especially at leaves 26. Said socket member 23 may be reinforced by struck-out di verging ribs 21, and above the latter have a socket proper 28 to receive the staff 22, which is preferably further secured by a screw or other fastening 29 passed through an opening in socket 28.
In attaching the connection I! to the mop head as suggested in Fig. 3, frame I9 is inserted into the space I5 by first inserting the ring H3 at its junction with arm I9, through opening I6, of web I3. The socket member 23 and staff are thereupon manipulated by turning and lateral movement to dispose the ring I8 in contact with the barrier or stitching at I4. It will be realized that the web I3 at either side of the opening I6 may be slightly raised to facilitate the entry and threading of the ring [8 into the space I5. However, when the ring is Within the space, the mop head or the socket and frame may be freely rotated relatively to each other, so that there will be no undue strain at any time of one on the other. This end is facilitated by having the opening H5 at the inner portion suitably enlarged to enable free rotation of the socket and by having the Web [3 overlapped slightly inwardly of the stitching or barrier 1'4 as shown at 30.
Various changes may be resorted to within the spirit and scope of the invention.
What is claimed is:
A mop head having superposed webs, stitching securing said webs together and forming an annular barrier for coaction -with a reinforcing frame havin a periphery in the "form for an .interrupted circle and carrying handle-mounting means, the uppermost Web having an opening therethrough within the confines of said barrier, said opening extending generally radially and being wider at the center of the uppermost web than adjacent the barrier, the uppermost web at the outer extremity of the opening and adjacent the barrier having portions overlapped for an appreciable distance radially of the uppermost web, said radial opening and overlapped portions of the uppermost web being adapted to enable application and removal of said frame by relative rotation of the frame and mop head and to enable turning of the frame within the mop head when in use without inadvertent separation of frame and mop head.
