UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES F. A. HINRIOHS AhlD CHARLES REISTLE, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNORS- TO SAID HINRIOHS.
LAMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 243,134, dated June 21, 1881. Application filed February 14, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom "it may concern Be it known that we, CHARLES F. A. HIN- RIGHS and CHARLES REISTLE, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Lamps, of wh ch the following is a specification.
Lamps have been made with a metallic reservoir for holding the kerosene or other oil, and a filling-neck has been provided at one side, covered by a screw-cap. In lamps of this kind the height of the oil in the reservoir cannot easily be observed, and frequently the flow of oil in filling the reservoir is not stopped in time to prevent the same running over. This filling-neck and screw-caps are objectionable in appearance, especially with ornamental mantel-lamps.
This invention is made for the purpose of indicating the height of the oil and preventing the overflow; also, for returning into the lamp any oil that might otherwise flow over the outside, and for covering the filling-neck and cap, so that they are not noticeable when the parts of the la mp are in their normal positions.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical section of the lamp-reservoir, and Fig. 2is a plan of the same with part of the covering-ringremoved.
The reservoir a is preferably of metal, and the size and shape of the same may vary according to the character of the lamp. The screw-collar o is adapted toreceive any of the 'well-known kinds of lamp-burners, and itisin the center of the ring-formed top I) of the reservoir a. The filling tube or neck 0 is adapted to receive oil from the spout of a can, and itis provided with a cover or cap, 1'. 7e prefer to make such cover fiat to set upon the top end of the tube 6, and attached by a hinge, 0, upon which it may be turned up in opening or closing the filling-tube 6.
There is an annular depression or groove, l, in the top I) of the reservoir, within which is the fillingtnbe 6, so that any oil that may escape from the burner or be spilled in filling height of the oil poured thereinto, and many accidents have occurred from overflow. We
provide a float, t, in combination with the.
t is preferably of cork, and it is within a basket or slotted extension of the fillin g-tube 0, so that it always rises within the said filling-tube, and becomes visible before the reservoir is full.
A cross-bar or prongs at 19 prevent the float being removed from the basket or open-work portion of the filling-tube.
If the groove land filling-tube cap 6 were visiblein highly-ornamental lamps, they would be objectionablein appearance. We therefore make use of movable ring a, that is of a size to surround the screw-collar and of sufficient width to cover the groove Z and cap 0, and the rim of this ring should also extend down into the groove 1, as shown. ringis to be ornamented to correspond with the base and other portions of the lamp. It improves the appearance, and also closes the groove and filling-tube in such a manner that there is no risk of any overflow oil catching fire.
The hinged cap to the filling-tube serves to hold up the ring when the parts are in the position shown by dotted lines, Fig. 1, for the oil to be poured into the lamp-reservoir.
We claim as our invention 1. In combination with the lamp-reservoir having an annular groovein its upper surface and the filling-tube, the removable ornamental ring a, surrounding the collar upon the reservoir and covering the groove and filling-tube, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the lamp-reservoir, filling-tube, and the removable ring a, of the hinged cap to the filler, forming also, when open, a support for the ring, substantially as set forth.
Signed by us this 7th day of February, A. D. 1881;
U. F. A. HINRIOHS. OHS. REl S'lLE. Witnesses GEO. T. PINOKNEY, WILLIAM G. Mom.
