(Cl. 'I0-355) 'My present invention, in itsv broad aspect, has reference to improvements 4in 'locks and keys therefore of the type having plural plates or tumblers which are arranged indifferent combinations to receive keys having removable and replaceable .teeth to conform to the numbered plates of the combination whereby to operate the lock. More particularly, itis my purpose to provide a lock which may either be right-hand or lefthand operatedwth an extensible keyway to fit doors and the like of different widths which may be made of either wood ormetal. Also, I provide a novel lock structure wherein the coverplate is attached to the casing body in a quick and eiective manner, and wherein the combination ci plates. can be quickly and easily changed` and the length of ,the keyway quickly and easilymodied to.correspond with doors of different thicknesses and thel like. Furthermore, my key is practical, novel and improved and has changeable teeth to correspond with the combination of the lock thereby eliminating the hazard inherent in lost keys in the hands of an unscrupulous person.
The characteristic details of this lock and kesI are clearly shown in the following description, and in the drawings accompanying same by way of illustration of the said locky and key; the same reference signs serving to designate the same parts on the gures shown.

`Figure 161is a viewof thekey teeth showing their differentforms'toffit'the tumblers.
Vll/ly lock is provided with acase for the `lock mechanism with lengthwise inner guides along which thelidslides when fastenedinplace with a lateralI notch to enable the belt to be thrown in .the manner hereinafter described: A post 2 isixed tothe bottom of the case an'dhas a'hook to holdthe lid `or cover in place. .A cylindrical nipple 3 isxed to the bottom ofthe case and has-a circular central cavity to permit pivoting ofthe key. A hole YI` is A.provided to admit'the spindle of the outerknob of the lock on the inside of the door, and an eccentric 5 is fixed to a disk 6 which is fastened to a conical nipple 'I fixed to spindle 8 inside the lock. An outer knob 9 is Xed to spindle 8 and is continued inside so as to turn eccentric 5. A block Ill is provided on the bottom of the case and has a screw-threaded tube Il to hold the tumblers or plates by means of a screw head I2. Tumblers I3 of stainless metal in any quantity are provided and have numbers stamped on them progressively to designate the combinations allowable in accordance with the number thereof. The tumblers are so balanced that their operation takes place by gravity both to the right and to the left according tothe side of the door on which the lock is installed. The holes I4 in the apex of the acute angle formed by the tumblers is to obtain a loose t on tube II, and circular gatings I5 of Varying radii are in accordance with the length of the combined steps or bits of the key-teeth, with a parallel notch I6 in the radius directed towards the bolt of the lock, to admit the key. The curved projecting teeth I1 on arch I8 are to lock the tumblers when .the lock is closed, and guides I9 rising from the bottom of the case are provided for lateral bars 20 of the tail of the bolt slide. Spiral springs 2l are accommodated in the case to hold the -bolt in the thrown position, and an intermediate plate 23 with bottom slide projections 24 and upper catches 25 engages into notches 26 of tumblers I3. A slot 21 in intermediate plate 23 functions on either side of the bit or fixed step of each key-tooth. The lid or cover 28 protects .the lock and has a lateral notch 29 which engages the hook 2 of case, and is held in place by screws. The eXtensible guide bar 30 of the key operates by means of a set of disks or washers to increase or diminish its length according to the thickness of the door 3| on which lock is to be fitted and slots are provided to admit screws 32 Xing them to outer plate 33 and lid 28 of the lock, which is provided with a. central keyhole 34 for the key to pass the same through plate 33, and the washers composing the guide bar 30 and lid 28.
The key is composed of two parts and a set of steps or bits in any quantity to combine them in accordance with the tumblers of the lock; the head of the key has a hole 35 t0 receive a keyring; at the bottom of bar 36 a portion 31 is cut away to accommodate bits or steps 38 by means of a rectangular slot 39. At the lower end is a pin or projection 40 with a screw-thread on which to screw nut 4 I, which also serves as a pivot when turning the key pushed home into the lock. Below the bottom bit or step 38 is a member 42, the purpose of which is to retract the bolt, after the tumblers have been operated by the key.
The operation of lock and key is as follows: When tted to the door either left or right hand, the first thing is to measure the thickness of the door to determine the number of disks or washers required for the keyway; they are xed by means of screws between the outer plate and the cover of the lock, after which the lock is fastened to the cover and the screws are placed to nally attach the case of the lock to the inner part. Once installed with the combination chosen for the bits or steps of the key teeth corresponding to the tumblers of the lock, when the key is introduced into the guides the steps engage in the tumblers and turn and throw the bolt to ope-n or shut, and inasmuch as the several steps have registered with the tumblers, such tumblers will function by gravity.
From the foregoing, it is believed that the operation and advantages of my invention will be apparent, but it is emphasized that interpretation of its scope should only be conclusive when made in the light of the subjoined claim.
I claim:
A lock, comprising a. casing formed with a body and a removable cover, the body having means forming a slide and seat for the cover, a hook, and the cover having a slot in which the hook engages, a nipple having a central cavity adapted to receive a key, the case having an opening adapted to receive the spindle of a doorknob, a bolt having laterally extending bars on the tail end thereof, on which the bolt slides, a plurality of tumblers of different form and numbered for identication, said tumblers having central slots communicating with gatings of differing radii, an intermediate plate with guide prongs engaging in the slots of the tumblers, an eccentric for drawing the bolt, and spiral springs mounted on the laterally extending bars on said bolt against which the bolt operates.
