BRONZING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 242,932, dated June 14, 1881,

To all whom it mcy concern:
Be it known that I," GUsTAV L. JAEGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at 'New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bronzing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention rel atcs to machines for applying bronze-powder or the like to paper or other similar material; and it consists in certain novel combinations of a sheet carrying cylinder, a bronze-hopper, and a wiping-apron, as hereint after fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
This invention is illustrated in the accompanyin g drawings, in which Figure l represents a vertical section taken in the plane of the line .r fr, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a plan or top view. Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the lineyy, Fig. 1, showing the bronze-hopper and its concomitants.

The cylinder A is provided with a gri per, D, (one or more,) which is operated by cams 5 in the usual manner to grasp the sheet to be bronzed, thereby carrying it around the cylinder, and release it at the appropriate place. e
The bronzehopper B is located opposite to the surface of the cylinder A, at any suitable place above the axis thereof to deposit the bronze on the sheet that is being carried around the cylinder, the hopper being in this example directly above the cylinder, and at the bottom of the hopper is arranged a sliding-gate, F, to which a reciprocating motion is imparted at intervals, as hereinafter described, thus intermittingly opening and closing the hopper.
The wiping apron C is arranged in superficial contact with the cylinder A, beginning at a point beyond the bronzefhopper B and extending a distance about equal to one-half the circumference of the cylinder, and the upper end of the apron is secured to a cross-piece, 6, of the machine-frame, while the lower end extends over a :roller or bar, 7, and is provided with a weight, 16, for keeping the apron in a taut condition. In lieu of the weight 16 'a winding roller may be used. I make the wiping- (N0 model.)
apron C preferably of plush-cloth, placing the nap against the surface of the cylinder. By its arrangement the wipingapron C is kept in a stretched condition and stationary in a longitudinal direction. A reciprocating motion, however, is imparted to the apron in a lateral direction, and by this means the bronze deposited on the sheet by the hopper is spread or distributed crosswise, as well as lengthwise, of the sheet as the latter is drawn between the cylinder and the apron. The apron G being arranged to extend around the larger portion of the lperiphery of the cylinder A, and being retained in a stretched condition, and therefore uniformly pressing on the surface of the. cylinder, it will beevident that the bronze is evenly` and uniformly distributed on the paper throughoutv its entire surface in a much more perfect manner than where bronze is distributed by reciprocating independent pads 0r brushes.f
For the purpose of impar-tin g the desired motion to the wiping-apron G, I make use of tripcams 8 and 9, which project from the cylinder at one end and act on rigid cross-pieces 10, secured to the apron, inthe revolutions of the cylinder, and of sprin gs 15,(see Fi g.2,)the crosspieces being bent at one end toward the cylinder, as at 11, and these bent ends being in the path ofthe cams. If desired, the trip-cams 8 9 may be arranged at both ends ofthe cylinder, the cams at one end actin g alternately with those at the other end. l
The gate F is perforated and slides directly beneath the bottom 12 of the hopper, whichis perforatedin a similar manner to the gate, and the means employed for operating the gate consists of the trip-cam 9, (this being one of `the cams for operating also the wiping-apron,) which acts directly on the gate in the revolutions of thecylinder, at one end of the gate, and of a spring, 13, Fig. 3, the gate being bent toward the cylinder, as at 14,to bring the same into the pathof the cam. By the action ofthe cam 9 the gateis forced against the spring 13, and its pcrforations are caused to register with those in the bottom l2 of the hopper, thus allowing the bronze to discharge, while, when the action of the cam ceases, the perforations are immediately brought out of registration with each other by the action of the spring.

If desired, the cam 9 may be made adjustable, and by this means the movement of the gate D can be varied to allow a greater or less amount of bronze to escape from the hopper.
For the purpose of catching the surplus bronze a box or receptacle, Gr, is arranged around the cylinder and apron.
It should be remarked that instead of giving a laterally-reciprocating motion to the wipingapron G this motion may be imparted to the cylinder with a like result, and also that other mechanism than that described may be used for accomplishing the desired purpose-as, for example, the cylinder may be provided with a serpentine camgroove to engage the rigid cross-pieces or any other suitable part of the apron.
The advantage peculiar to the trip-cams 8 9 is that one of such cams serves also to operat the hopper.
I am aware that it is not new, broadly, to
combine a wiping-apron with a sheet-carrying cylinder, and also that laterally-reciprocating brushes have been used in connection with an endless sh'eet-carryin g apron; and such not heing Within the scope of my invention, I hereby disclaim the same.
A bronzing-machine has heretofore been constructed of a bronze-hopper arranged above a sheet-carrying drum provided with clamps for grasping a sheet of paper on the feed-table, and aseries of independent brushes or pads reciprocated across the cylinder for spreading the bronze on the paper; but such does not constitute my invention, and is not claimed by me.
The hopper of a bronzing-machine has also been provided with a slide reciprocated by cams and springs across the discharge-mouth of the hopper for intermittently feeding the bronze and such, broadly, I do not claim.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, substantially as hereinbefore set forth, of the sheet-carryin g cylinder, the continuous stretched wiping-apron arranged i'n superficial contact with the cylinder, and mechanism for imparting to the wiping-apron or the cylinder a reciprocating motion, for the purpose set forth.

The combination, substantially as hereinbefore set forth, of the sheet-carrying cylinder having the trip-cam 9 directly attached to its end, the bronze-hopper located opposite to the surface of the cylinder, and having a bottom, 12, provided with perforations, the sliding gate F, provided with a series of perforations. and having its end arranged in the path ot' the trip-cam, and the spring acting on the gate, for the purpose described.
5. The combination, substantially as hereinbefore set forth, of the sheet-carrying cylinder having the trip-cams 8 9, the continuous stretched wiping-apron arranged in superficial contact with the cylinder, the rigid cross-pieces of the apron, having their ends arran gedin the path of the trip-cams, the springs acting on the cross-pieces, the bronze-hopper located opposite to the surface of the cylinder, the sliding gate of the bronze-hopper, having its end arranged in the path of the trip-cam 9, and the spring acting on the gate, for the purpose described.
