J OHN U. FIESTER, OF BROWN, OHIO.
GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 242,621, dated June 7, 1881.
Application filed March 14, 1881. (Model) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN U. FIESTER, a citizen ofthe United States, resident at Brown, in the county of Guernsey and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates; and'I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a representation of a side view. Fig. 2 is a plan view. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section, and Fig. 4is a detail view. Fig. 5 is a perspective view, showing the gate closed.
This invention relates to improvements in gates.
The invention consists in the construction hereinafter described.
In the annexed drawings, A is the sill, B B the posts, and O the top cross-bar, of a gate.
D D are the leaves of the gate, made fast to rods E E, these latter being journaled in loops 1) b at the bottom and a a at the top, one rod being to one side of the cross-bar and sill and the other to the other side, both having at the top the rightangled arm 6 0, provided with an eye, 2 z, in which are placed the hook ends jfof a transverse rod, F, running alongside of cross-bar (J. To the other side of crossbar 0 is secured one end,g, of a spring-rod, G, which extends up over said cross-bar and carries a grooved roller, H, in whose groove h the rod F bears, said rod and roller holding the gate open.
livoted to the leaves D D are the members I l of the gate-catch, one, I, consisting of a single lever pivoted at i, and having in front the pin y and the rear extension, :2, attached to the end of which is the end of a loose plate, K, which runs forward upon the opposite side of the gate .from lever l and comes between leaf 1) and post B. The other member, 1, consists of a compound lever, L and M, pivoted to the leaf D at land on and to each other at c. This lever has a plate, K, similar to plate K, except that it is on the side of the gate away from the post B.
N and P are two bars secured to the ends of sill A, and projecting in opposite directions from said sill, being braced back of the posts by rods 0. The ends a and 1) of these bars are turned up or provided with posts Q and B, one, 1%, having a strip, r, on top. Pivoted to the tops of these posts are the levers S and T, having eyes 8 and t at one end. Running from these eyes are the connecting-rods U V, whose other ends are connected to the rear-extended ends of the top rails of the gate, one rod, U, directly, the other, V, by means of a short rod, 4:, and links 20, thelatter rod, V, being toward the side of the posts B and B to which the leaves respectively hang.
The gate being closed, as aperson approaches he moves lever T, which, pulling on rod V through the short link 11, lifts the outer end, a, of the catch I, and releases thereby the inner eud,- 2 ,acontinued motion of lever S opening the leaf on that side, and by the rod F also the leaf on the other side. I is to be operated by a similar arrangement of levers for opening from the other side of the gate, the outer end, 00, being pulled up. The gate is closed by operating the lever S on the other side.
It will be noticed that the spring-plates K and K prevent the leaves from swinging too far the other way as they close.
Ordinarily this gate will be used without any sill A, and in this case the bars N and P and the posts Q and R are not used; but the levers S and T can be applied to fence-posts.
To better facilitate the catching of the leaves when they come together, the edge of leaf D is cut out at afljust above the member I of the catch, so that the other member will be forced down into locking position.
What I claim is-.
1. A gate provided with leaf D, lever I, having rear extension, levers S and T, rods U and V, short rod 0, and links a, in combination with leaf D and a rod connecting the two leaves, substantially as described.
2. Leaf D, having spring-plate 70 attached thereto, in combination with the post B, substantially as described.
3. Leaf D, having the member I of the latch and cut out above at a in combination with the leaf D, having the other member, I, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
Witnesses: JOHN U. FIESTER.
