Description

Aug. 12,1947. J GOLD BLATT 2,425,465
I I LINK BRACELET Filed April 5, 1946 INVENTOR I Joszpw Gowns/.417
vzzzu 5] I BY ATTORNEYS Patented Aug. 12, 1947 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 6 Claims.
My invention relates generally to jewelry, and in particular it relates to articles of jewelry as bracelets, wristlets, necklaces, or the like. I will describe my invention hereinbelow, as illustrated, in respect of a bracelet, but it is to be understood that my invention is to be limited only by the scope of the annexed claims.
The main object of my invention is to provide an article of the character described comprising a plurality of intertwined and interwoven link members pivotally secured to each other.
Another object of my invention is the formation of an article of jewelry comprising a plurality of strands of linked members, each strand consisting of a number of links S-shaped in plan and inverted U-shaped in elevation.
Another object of my invention is the provision of an article of jewelry comprising a pair of strands of linked members, each strand having a full-length link at one end and a half-length link at the other end.
Another object of my invention is the provision of an article of jewelry comprising a pair of strands of linked members, one strand having a half link at both ends thereof, and the other strand being composed entirely of full-length links.
Another object of my invention is the provision of an article of jewelry comprising a pair of strands of linked members, the joints between the links of one strand being located midway of the link lengths of the other strand.
Another object of my invention is the provision of an article of link jewelry, each link comprising a member U-shaped in side elevation and S-shaped in topplan.
Other and further objects of my invention will in part be pointed out hereinbelow and still others will be apparent from the following description of an illustrative embodiment'thereof.
In the drawings annexed hereto, forming a part hereof,
Figure 1 is a side view of one form of device constructed according to and embodying my invention;
Figure 2 is a side elevational view of a portion of the device illustrated in Figure 1, showing the links spread apart and the device in straight line I condition;
Figure 3 is a bottom plan view, slightly enlarged, of the portion shown in top plan in Figure 2;
Figure 4 is a section on the line 4-4 of Figure 3;
Figure 5 is a section on the line 55 of Figure 4; and
Figure 6 is a view similar to Figure 1 of a modified form of device also constructed according to and embodying my invention.
The specific embodiment of my invention illustrated in Figure 1 is indicated generally by reference numeral l5 and comprises a pair of strands A and B, each comprising a plurality of pivotally secured together elements l2, l2, having cooperating fastening members l4, It at opposite ends thereof. The link elements l2 and fastener components I l, E6 of my invention may be made of precious or semi-precious metals, or of plastic materials, and may be formed as by molding, casting, stamping or otherwise.
Each link component comprises a length of material which is $-shape when viewed in plan (see link li Fig. 3) and is of inverted U-shape when viewed in side elevation, see link l2 Fig. 2. It is a feature of my invention that both ends of each link are in the same lateral and vertical planes; one end of each link terminating in a tongue portion 20, and the other end of each link being socketed as at 22, to receive the tongue 25 of the adjacent link element, the links being pivotally secured together as by pins 24 passing through the interfitted link ends 20, 22.
At one end of my device, I provide the female component It of a conventional cooperating fastener, the male component it thereof being secured to the other end. In assembling the parts of my device to form the article of jewelry as illustrated in the modification of Figure 1, I secure to one side of female member M a halflength link as 50, and adjacent thereto on memher [4 I secure a full-length link as 5|. It will be seen that the end of the first half-link section 50 is positioned midway of the length of full link 5!. To the free end 52 of half-link 50, I then pivotally attach a full-length link 54, while to the free end 53 of link 5|, I attach, as by pin 24 fastening, a full length link 55. To link 54, I attach links 56, 58, 6B and 62 in succession, and to link 55, I attach in succession links 51, 59, 6| and 63, all as shown in Fig. 1. As shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the joint between the adjacent links of one strand is positioned midway of the ends of the links of the other strand, since the first two link elements secured to the female portion I4 were full-length element 5!, and half-length element 50. Thus, when the full-length link 63 of strand B is secured to male fastener component l5, strand A (comprising half link 50 and full length links 54, 56, 58, and 62) terminates one-half link length short of male fastener component I6, and so a half-length link as 64 is 3 provided and secured to component It to equalize both strand lengths and complete the article of jewelry.
In Figure 6, I have illustrated the preferable form of my construction, in which the male fastener component i indicated by reference numeral and the female component by reference numeral 12, the fasteners being located at the ends of a pair of intertwined strands C, D. Strands C and D are both composed of links l2, S-shaped in plan and inverted U-shaped in side elevation, as in the modification of Fig. 1.
Strand C comprises a half-length link 89 at one end thereof secured to fastener 12, and a fulllength link 82 at the other end thereof, secured Strand D, of the same length to fastener Iii. as strand C, also comprises a half-length link 84 at one end thereof and terminates in a fulllength link 86 at the other 'end thereof, but the positions of the terminal half-length links and full-length links of the two strands are reversed. Thus, at the male fastener component ill end of the article, there is full-length link 82 of strand C and half-length link 84 of strand D, while at the opposite end of the article, socketed in female fastener component 12, there is half-length link 80 of strand C and full-length link 86 of strand D.
In this modification of my invention, as in the modification of Figure l, the joint between adjacent links of one strand is midway between the ends of the links of theother strand.
It will be seen, therefore, that my device comprises a plurality of interwoven strands, as A, B, C and D, each consisting of plurality of links pivotally connected to each other, with the points of connection between the links of one strand being located midway of the lengths of the links of the other strand. The strands forming part of my device are of equal length. Strands C and D are made up of the same number of full-length links and both have a half-length link at oppo-, Strand B is made up wholly? site endsthereof. of fulllength links, while strand A is made up of full length links except at the ends, where half length links are provided.
cooperating fasteners l4, l6 and 10, I2 are interfitted. When the fasteners are disengaged, the
' Figs. 1 and 6 illustrate the article when the shape of the article may be changed from circular to straight line form, and in the latter form, the link elements are spread and spaced apart as shown in Figs. 2 and 4.
Having now described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure =by Letters Patent is:
1. An article of manufacture having cooperating fastener elements at the opposite ends thereof comprising a plurality of strands shiftable with respect to each other, each strand comprising a number of end-to-end pivotally connected links, each link being generally S-shaped in plan and of inverted U-shape in elevation, with the end of each link member being in the same vertical and horizontal planes, the article assuming a generally circlet form when the cooperating fastener elements are engaged, and being extendable into substantially straight-line form when the cooperating fastening elements are disengaged,
2. An article as in'claim 1, in which the points of connection between the link components of one strand are midway of the'lengths of the links of the adjacent strand. I
3. An article a in claim 1, having but two strands, in which the link of one strand wind spirally around the links of the other strand;
'4. An article as in claim 1, in which each one strand has one-half length link at both ends thereof.
5. An article as in claim Lin'which each strand has a half-length link at one end'ther'eof;
6. An article as in claim 1, having two strands,
and each strandis composed of full-length links and one-half length link, the half-length link of one strand being at the opposite end from the half-length link of the second strand.
