Description

July 29, 1947. w. M. PATTERSON NURSING NIPPLE AND BOTTLE Filed Aug. 22 1945 II III I II/III/ I/Illl/ Inventar ifiiiz'am yfmzemaiz and Patented July 29, 1947 2,424,629 NURSING NIPPLE AND BOTTLE William M. Patterson, Ravenna, Ohio, assignor of one-half to Fred W. Patterson, Coshocton,
Ohio
Application August 22, 1945, Serial No 611,959
2 Claims.
My invention relates to a nursing bottle and nipple assembly and has for an object to provide a nipple adapted to be used with bottles having necks of varying forms.
Another object of this invention is to provide a nursing nipple assembly comprising a nipple having a retaining means and an independent retainer and enclosure cap.
A further object of the invention is to provide a nipple having a reduced inlet neck and outlet ports and an intermediate breast portion.
A still further object of my invention is to provide the combination of a nipple and retainer therefor arranged to secure the nipple to the bottle in upright or in inverted position.
Other features and advantages will become more readily apparent from the following description and the accompanying illustrative drawings in which: I
Figure 1 is a sectional view of my invention shown in position for use,
Figure 2 is a similar view shown in position for sealing the nipple within a bottle, and
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 1, illustrating the application of the nipple to a bottle of a different form.
In the accompanying drawings as above enumerated and in the following specification, like characters of reference indicate lik parts throughout and in which l0, indicates my invention, which comprises a nipple ll, having a reduced neck i2, a reduced outlet [3, and intermediate breast portion l4. Below the neck [2, is an enlargement 15, providing an outwardly projecting flange l6, and an inwardly projecting flange H, the lower wall of the latter flange is inclined as at E8, to provide an enlarged mouth l9, into the nipple. The flange ll, is adapted to slip over the bead 2!), of a small necked bottle 2|, said inclined wall l8, also forming a guide for the bead 20, in order to direct the same into the recess 22, in the reduced portion of the nipple neck.
When the nipple is to be used on a small necked bottle as 2|, no other means is required to retain the same thereon. However, when the same nipple is to be used on an enlarged neck 23, of a bottle 24, I provide a ring 25, having an inwardly projecting flange 26, and outwardly projecting flange 21, and a downwardly projecting flange 28, all of said flanges being annular with the ring. I also provide an internally screwthreaded cap ring 29. In using the nipple upon this form of bottle, the said ring 25, is seated around the said neck l2, and the flange 28, of the ring is projected into the mouth of the bottle, its
flange 21, seating upon the upper surface of the bottle neck and its flange 26, surrounding and bearing against the reduced wall l2, whereby said wall is stiffened. After these members have been seated in the bottle neck the cap ring 29, is placed over the nipple and screwed down upon the threads 30, of the said bottle neck, whereby the nipple is firmly secured to the bottle.
When the device is to be stored away the nipple I4, together with the ring 25, are inverted and projected down into the mouth of the bottle, then a closure cap 3 I, provided with an annular flange 32, adapted to seat upon the flange 21, of the ring 25, and the flange 33, of the cap ring 29, is adapted to bear down upon the flange 32, and thereby seal the nipple within the bottle in order to keep it out of contact with any infectious matter or insects.
From the above description it will be seen that I have provided a nursing nipple which may readily be used on bottles of various forms, which may be sealed against contamination and which provides the breast portion l4, against which the lips of an infant may rest and thereby obviate the sucking in of air when nursing.
It is thought that persons skilled in the art to which the invention relates will be able to obtain a clear understanding of the invention after considering the description in connection with the drawings. Therefore, a more lengthy description is regarded as unnecessary. 7
Changes in shape, size and rearrangement of details and parts such as come within the purview of the invention claimed may be resorted to, in actual practice, if desired.
Having now described my invention, that which I claim as new and desire to procure by Letters Patent is:
1. An elastic nipple comprising an annular base portion being centrally apertured and countersunk on its lower surface, a collar portion extending upwardly from said base portion in spaced relation from the inner and outer edges thereof, a thickened breast portion formed on the upper end of said collar portion having converging surfaces extending at approximately right angles to each other and being formed with a restricted aperture at its lowe end forming a sealing flange having a beveled upper surface, and an apertured nipple portion formed on the end of said breast portion.
2. An elastic nipple comprising an annular base portion being centrally apertured and countersunk on its lower surface, a collar portion extending upwardly from said base portion in spaced nipple either over or in the end of a nursing 10 2259223 bottle.
