ANIMATED ILLUMINATED APPARATUS Filed Jan. 1, 1945 nvVENToR. Mae/a o/a Patented June 17, 1947 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE ANIMATE!) ILLUMINATED APPARATUS Joseph Golba, Gardner, Kans.
Application January 1, 1945, Serial No. 570,966
1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to animated apparatus of the character that may be carried by the user as an article of ornamentation or means for attracting attention to such advertising as may be associated with the moving portion lof the apparatus.
The primary aim of the instant invention is to provide an animated, illuminated device having as an important part thereof, a revolvable body, interiorly illuminated through the medium of either a self-contained flashlight or a lamp that receives its energy from a source of supply such as a conventional outlet.
This invention has for another important aim to provide rugged, durable and inexpensive structure for embodying the broad concepts above mentioned, and to maintain the illuminated rotatable body in a position for use.
A still further object of this invention is the provision of novel, unique motivating means for the rotatable body, which means comprises an extensible staff and other structure, whereby the illuminated body is carried in an elevated position at a predetermined height.
Other aims of the invention will appear during the course of the following specication, referring to the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary condensed front elevational `view of the animated illuminated apparatus made in accordance with the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a side elevational View thereof, parts being broken away to reveal the speciiic manner of construction.
In the preferred form of the invention, the apparatus is constructed for use as a decorative piece to be carried at celebrations and Ato present to view a rotating body which in its most desirable form is a star.
This body broadly designated by the numeral l comprises a wall l2 having an opening I4 and an opening l5 formed therethrough. A series of laterally projecting lingers I8 extend from wall l2 and their free ends are joined by a ring or the like 2li.
The wall opposite to that numbered l2, is made of transparent or translucent sheet material 22 and covers the entire front face of body I0. Hooks 24 removably secure wall 22 in place with the edge wall 26 bridging the distances between wall l2 and wall 22.
Edge wall 26 comprises a number of sections 28, each substantially V-shaped in cross section and having a marginal portion 30 overlying fingers I8, as clearly illustrated in Fig. l. These overlying marginal portions 30 of sections 28, are secured together and two fingers i8 when body Ill is constructed. Thus, a hollow body is created, the edge and front wall whereof is` of suitable selected color, for the material from which these walls 22 with 22 are made, is chosen with special regard to the type of decoration required.
The interior of body lll is illuminated by a flashlight 32 or by lamp 34. Where a source of electrical current is not available, flashlight 32 is employed. If the apparatus is to be used close to an electrical outlet, then lamp 34 is joined to such outlet through the medium of conductors 38 and plug 38. Obviously, plug 38 is joined to one end of an extension having suitable length and that leads to a conventional wall socket.
Body It is mounted for rotation by hollow spindle 4l] and a tubular pulley 42. Spindle 40 is attached to one end of a staif 44 through the medium of a cap 45 and lamp 34 is carried by this said spindle. Pulley 42 circumscribes spindle 4B and is attached to wall l2 of body Il) as at 48. A portion of this pulley 42 is grooved to receive belt 5E! that extends to a manually operable sheave f wheel 52, disposed adjacent the opposite end of staff 44.
Crank 54 rotates sheave wheel 52 and such rotary movement as is mpartedto sheave 52, is transmitted to body lll as will become apparent thro-ugh an inspection of Fig. 2 of the drawing.
Staff 44 is sectional and provided with an eX- tending length 56 that carries bar 58. This bar 58 engages a handle of crank 54 as illustrated, and longitudinal movement of bar 58 by the operator, will obviously rotate crank 54. Bar 58 is mounted upon extension 56 through the medium of a bearing 60 formed to allow the necessary rocking movement due to the throw of crank 54. Thus, as the bar is manipulated, crank 54 is operated and body I0 is rotated about its axis.
Apparatus of the character above specified has a wide number of uses, and while the preferred embodiment of the invention has been shown and described, it is desired to be limited only by the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
In apparatus of the character described, a portable stai; a hollow body having illuminating means therein rotatably mounted on the staff at one end thereof; a manually manipulable crank journalled in the staff at the opposite end thereof; a sheave on the crank; a pulley on the body; a belt passing over the pulley and sheave; a length extending section removably secured to the said opposite end of the staff; and a bar mounted on the said section for longitudinal reciprocation and rocking moi/ement, said bar being connected to the crank to operate the same as the bar is manually reciprocated and rocked whereby the body is rotated when the extending length is in place.
