The present invention relates to shoes designed primarily for use by women for athletic activities. The aim of the invention is to provide a shoe of this type which will be sturdy and comfortable to the wearer. For this purpose the present shoe is provided with a flat bottom sole and a wedge heel, the construction being rendered sturdy by the employment of a weltwhich extends throughout the length of the shoe from toe to heel and which serves to provide a firm and long lasting union between the upper and the out-sole and wedge heel.

More particularly the present invention provides the wedge with a covering which has a lateral portion integral therewith for union with the welt strip. This lateral portion may take on any desirable form, and in the preferred embodiment it is in the form of a beading or piping integral with the covering,

The preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings and described in the following specification, it being understood that variations thereof falling within the scope of the amended claims will be apparent to persons skilled in the art.

In the present shoe the upper I is of the type commonly employed in athletic shoes in that the opening of the shoe extends substantially to the toe of the shoe with the lacing extending almost the full length of the upper as shown by the eyelets Ill. The tongue I2 of the shoe is integral with the soft toe I3. This type of construction of uppers in athletic shoes provides for a comfortable fit and for a firm embrasure of the wearers foot.

In manufacture the upper III, together with the tongue I2, with its toe portion I3 are first manufactured in the customary and known manner. The wedge I5, which may be made of any suitable material suchas wood, leather, or rubber or the like, is encased, wrapped, or covered with an outer covering I6 made of leather or leather substitute. The wrapper or cover I6 is preferably rendered integral with the main body portion I 5 of the wedge by use of a suitable adhesive. The lower edge I 1 of the covering I6 is turned as shown in Figure 2 and is attached by the adhesive to the lower face of the wedge I5. At its upper edge the wrapping I6 is beaded and provides a laterally outwardly extending portion in the form of a bead or piping as shown at I8. The

upper edge of the covering I6 also has a marginal portion I9 which overlies the upper face of the wedge I5, and like the entire covering is united with the upper face of the wedge I5 by adhesive. The beading or piping I8 will be seen in Figures 1 and 2 to extend around the upper edge of the wedge from one corner of its forward edge and around to the other corner of its forward edge.

The welt 20 is sewed in the customary manner by means of stitching 2| to the upper and to the inner sole 22 all around the lower edge of the upper I0. The laterally extending portion of the welt 20 is then sewed by stitching 23 to the bead I8 which extends all around the outside upper edge of the wedge I5 and then to the forward half of the out-sole I4 by the stitching 24, The assembly of the shoe is completed by uniting the rear half of the out-sole I4 to the bottom face of the wedge I5 in any desirable manner either by the employment of a suitable adhesive or by the employment of nails or tacks 26.

By means of the present invention, which includes the formation of a beading or piping in the casing of the wedge along its upper edge and the employment of this beading or casing for uniting the welt with the wedge, a sturdy womens athletic shoe is obtained which may be manufactured with great facility.

I claim:

1. In a shoe having an upper, an insole, a wedge heel, and a fiat outer sole; the combination of a covering for said wedge having a laterally outwardly extending portion along the upper edge of said wedge and a welt strip sewed to the upper and insole along its full length, to the outsole along its forward part and to the said portion of the wedge covering alongits rear part.

2. In a shoe having an upper, an insole, a wedge heel,.and a fiat outer sole; the combination of a covering for said wedge having a laterally outwardly extending beading along the Dper edge of said wedge and a welt strip sewed to the upper and insole along its full length, to the outsole along its forward part and to the said beading of the wedge covering along its rear part.

In a shoe having an upper, an insole, a wedge heel, and a fiat outer sole; the combination of a covering secured to said wedge, a lower marginal portion secured to the lower face of the wedge, said covering also having an upper marginal portion secured to the upper face of the wedge, said upper portion being bordered by an outwardly extending re-entrant portion of covering material, and a welt strip secured to said upper and insole along its full length, to said outsole along a portion of its length and to said re-entrant portion along the remainder of its length.
