Description

June 3, 1947. H. M. POOLE ADJUSTABLE CLTHES HANGER Filed Dec. 21, 1945 Patented June 3, 1947 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE ADJUSTABLE CLOTHES HANGER Herbert M. Poole, Sardinia, Ohio Application December 21, 1945, Serial No. 636,329
(Cl. 22S-88) 2 Claims.
This invention relates to garment hangers, and more particularly to an adjustable garment hanger.
A main object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved adjustable garment hanger of very simple construction which is adapted to be very easily adjusted to t different sizes of garments, the hanger being constructed of a minimum number of easily manufacturable parts.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved garment hanger which is very light in weight, very inexpensive to manufacture and is adapted to support garments thereon without forming creases in the fabric.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will appear from the following description and claims, and from the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is an elevational view, partly in crosssection, of a garment hanger according to the present invention.
Figure 2 is a cross-sectional View taken 2--2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a cross-sectional View taken on line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings, II designates the main body portion of the hanger, said main body portion being of inverted V-shape in elevation and being generally U -shaped in cross section. At the apex of body portion II a hook I2 is secured, said hook I2 being rotatable around a vertical axis with respect to body portion I I.
The end portion of one arm, of body portion II is formed with a plurality of longitudinally spaced indentations I3. Telescopically engaged with said one of the arms is an angular member I4, the upper portion I5 of which is U-shaped in cross-section and adapted to slidably embrace said one of the arms. Portion I5 is formed with an indentation I6 adapted to be received in a selected indentation I3 to hold portion I5 at a de sired position of adjustment on body member I l. A pair of bendable tabs I1, II are provided at the end of portion I5, said tabs being adapted to be bent inwardly of the flange portions of body member I I to lock portion I5 in adjusted position, as shown in Figure 2.
The lower portion of angular member I4 is formed with a straight tubular bar section I8. Bar section I8 is slidably received in a tubular sleeve element I9 carried by an angular member 20 which is generally similar to member I5 except that tubular sleeve element I9 is of larger diameter than tubular end section I8. Angular member 20 has an upper channel-shaped portion on line 2I, said portion 2l being slidably engaged with the other arm of body member II. Portion 2I is also provided with bendable tab elements 23 similar to tab elements I'I for slidably securing portion 2| to body member I I.
To adjust the hanger to a desired size the embracing elements I5 and 2I are slid to their desired positions of adjustment on body member I I with indentation I8 and a selected indentation I3 in interlocking engagement.
The garment-supporting surfaces of the hanger present smoothly rounded, relatively broad areas of contact to the garments, thus avoiding the formation of creases or wrinkles in the fabric such as are caused by conventional wire hangers. The channel-shaped cross-section of the shoulder portions of the hanger provides substantial strength and ruggedness of construction combined with lightness of weight. The tubular telescoping bar portions I8 and I9 provide a rigid and smoothly rounded supporting surface for trousers or similar garments.
The swivel connection of hook I2 with the top portion of body member II enables said body member to be turned in any desired direction with respect to the hanger-supporting means.
While a specific embodiment of an adjustable garment hanger has been disclosed in the foregoing description, it will be understood that various modiiications within the spirit of the invention may occur to those skilled in the art. Therefore, it is intended that no limitations be placed on the invention other than as defined by the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A clothes hanger comprising a body member of inverted V-shape in elevation, said body member being substantially of inverted U-shape in cross-section, a hook rotatably secured to said body member at the apex thereof, a rst angular member, said first angular member having an upper portion formed to slidably embrace one arm of said body member and having a tubular hori- Zontal bar member, a second angular member having an upper portion formed to slidably embrace the other arm of said body member and having a sleeve adapted to telescopically receive said tubular bar member, and cooperating means formed on one of said upper portions and its embraced arm for locking said angular members in adjusted positions.
2. In a garment hanger having relatively thick straight depending arms associated with a substantially U-shaped central section carrying a centrally disposed supporting hook, said arms and 3 central portion of inverted U-shape in cross-section, and the upper surfaces of said straight sections of the depending arms having indentations therein, acute angularly-shaped elements slidably mounted on the straight sections of said arms having horizontally positioned members with one of said horizontally positioned members telescoping in the other forming a straight bar suspended below and from the ends of the arms of the hanger, projections on the sloping sections of said acute angularly-shaped elements coacting with said indentations in the depending arms restraining said angularly-shaped elements in adjusted position, and tabs on the ends of said acute-angularly-shaped elements extending under and overlapping the edges of the sides of the straight section of the depending arms of the hanger preventing accidental separation of the projections of the acute angularly-shaped elements from the indentations of the depending arms of the hanger.
