(Cl. 19-143) This invention relates to an improved textile roll or roller such as is used in carding and spinning machinery in textile mills as well as in other industries requiring the processing of textiles, for example, cotton, rayon, wool, or so-called mixes, the essential phase of the invention having to do with a decidedly improved heat dissipating cot.
A textile roller such as is used in present day carding and spinning machinery comprises a metal arbor, this having longitudinally spaced sleeve-like rubber or equivalent cots rigidly mounted thereon, the intermediate and end portions of the arbor being of cylindrical cross-sectional form and providing journals receptive in the machine bearings provided therefor.
So far as I know the regular and synthetic rubber cots now utilized have their tractive surfaces sufliciently pliable and resilient to effectively accommodate the roving. However, after a few weeks running, the surface of a cot becomes impacted and undesirably glazed. Thus, the surface loses its important requirements of resilience and frictional traction. Such a condition fails to allow the cot to carry short fibers or what is known to the trade as clearer waste to the top clearer in order to gather properly.
Instead, these short fibers gather at the outside edge of the top clearer and hang down over the roll. This has produced a condition which is known to the trade as eyebrowing. As the size of the eyebrow increases it will finally touch the yarn, and bunches of short fibers will be pulled into the yarn to impair same.
. The purpose and, therefore, the principal object of the present invention has to do with the provision of cots which are such as to eliminate, to a reasonable degree, objectionable "eyebrowing. Conventional cots are of solid rubber or equivalent stock and are, therefore, impervious to the passage of air. My improved cots, on the other hand, are of such construction as to be porous, the presence of the pores functioning sufliciently to aerate the cots that they dissipate heat generated in the rotating arbor and, as a result thereof, minimize the likelihood of impacting and glazing.
Other features and advantages will become more readily apparent from the following description and the accompanying illustrative drawing.
In the drawing, wherein like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the views:
Figure 1 is a plan or elevational view of a textile roller having the improved porous cots mounted thereon.
Figure 2 is a cross section on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings by distinguishing reference numerals, the arbor, as a unit, is denoted by the numeral 5, the same being characterized by the customary central journal 6 and projecting end journals 1. The improved cots 8 are mounted on the flanged hub portions at points between said journals 6 and 1.
Each cot is the same in construction and the description of one will suffice for both. To this end, it is to be pointed out that the cot is of customary cylindrical sleeve-like form and of conventional dimensions and material. The principal difference is that it is porous as distinguished from the customary solid and impervious to air types. now utilized. In keeping with my ideas the pores, these being denoted at 9 may be, if desired, mechanically formed by Dunc turing and they extend entirely through the sleeve. They thus form a myriad of tiny air holes such as are sufficient to dissipate objectionable heat generated by and in the metal arbor. By preference, these pores are arranged in rows with the rows spiraling around the circumference.
It is not to be inferred from the preceding statement that a, mechanical puncturing procedure is the only mode of construction. It is within the purview of the invention, obviously, to originally manufacture the cot in" any one of different methods to render same porous throughout or to otherwise mold and construct the needed multiplicity of air passages. The cot is thus rention of air at least to an extent suflicient to release the heat waves radiated and to thus dissipate the heat.
The perforations or pores will render the cot sufliciently resilient over a prolonged. period of time and will maintain it in a substantially new state for this extra time period; and, while in use, it virtually eliminates eyebrowing."
By way of summation, it will be seen that the essence of the invention has to do 1) with an improved textile roller for use in carding and spinning machinery and (2) an improved rubber cot. The finished roller comprises an elongated arbor, having intermediate and end journals and a pair of longitudinally spaced cots, which are mounted substantially rigidly on the arbor at customary points between the stated journals, said cots having perforations, the perforations extending radially throughout the complete thickness of the cots and. from the surrounded arbor surfaces through the outer surfaces of said cots, this in order to dissipate heat, such as is generated in and around the arbor and cots and to, at thesame time, minimize impacting and glazing of the outer'peripheral and tractive sur-- faces. of said cots. As to the second aspect, the invention also has reference to the sub-combination, that is the cot by itself which is formed with perforations, a multiplicity of same, and said perforations extending completely through the thickness to provide aeration holes.
A careful consideration of the foregoing description in conjunction with the invention as illustrated in the drawings will enable the reader to tual practice so long as no departure is made from the invention as claimed.
I claim:
1. A textile roller comprising an arbor and a sleeve-like cot or rubber or rubber-like material mounted on said arbor in surrounding relationship thereto. said cot having numerous heat dissipating openings extending from its inner, arborcontacting face to its outer face.
