Y Abraham Gddshol ATTORNEY.
Patented May 20, 1947 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 3 Claims.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in garments with adjustable cup sizes.
More specifically the invention proposes the construction of a garment which might be a brassire, slip, corset, sportswear, negligee, bathing suit, night gown, dress foundation, chemises, combinations, corset covers, or halters having openings for bust cups with bust cups secured at their edges in position in the openings to complete the construction of the garment.
A further object of the invention proposes forming each 'cloth bust cup with pleats, shirred areas, gatherings or folds in a manner to permit the cloth bust cups to fit around and support busts of different sizes.
A further object of the invention proposes forming each bust cup of a single piece of material or of separate pieces of material having their adjacent edges securely attached together and formed with the pleats, gatherings or folds extending either horizontally or vertically.
A further object of the invention proposes the provision of a novel arrangement provided in connection with certain of the pleats, gatherings, of folds for limiting their expansion to adjust the garment to a definite size.
It is a further object of this invention to construct a garment with adjustable cup sizes which is simple and durable and which can be manufactured and sold at a reasonable cost.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawings forming a material part of this disclosure:
Fi 1 is a front elevational view of a brassiere provided with adjustable cup sizes in accordance with this invention.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged horizontal sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a partial side elevational view of a person wearing the brassire and illustrating one adjusted position of the cup size.
Fig. 4 is a View similar to Fig. 3 but illustrating another adjusted position of the cup size.
Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 1 but illustrating a modification of the invention.
Fig. 6 is an enlarged partial horizontal sectional view taken on the line 6-5 of Fig. 5.
Fig. 7 is a view similar to a portion of Fig. l but illustrating a still further modification of the invention.
The garment with adjustable cup sizes, according to this invention, includes a garment body 10 having. spaced openings H for bust cups. On the drawings the garment body I0 is illustrated as a brassiere but this is by way of illustration only. as the invention is equally applicable to slips, brassires, corsets, sportswear, negligees, bathing suits, night gowns, dress foundations, chemises, combinations, corset covers, and halters.
Cloth bust cups I2 are secured at their edges to the edge portions of the openings ll. These bust cups [2 are secured in position by" means of lines of stitches l3. Each of the bust cups I2 is provided with vertically arranged and spaced,
curvilinear pleats, gatherings, or folds l4. These pleats, gatherings or folds permit the bust cups [4 to automatically adjust themselves to fit and support busts of diflerent sizes. Figs. 3 and 4 illustrate a manner in which the bust cups l2 adjust themselves.
In the modification shown in Figs. 5 and 6 the construction of the garment body It is similar to that previously described except for the provision of a means for holding certain of the pleats, gatherings or folds in adjustably extended positions to adjust the garment to fit busts of given size. This means comprises eyelet openings 20 formed in the material of adjacent folds and through which a lace 2| is extended in a manner to be adjusted and tied to retain the folds in position. The ends of the lace 2| are adapted to be tied into bows 22 for fixedly holding the lace in its adjusted position and prevent complete separation of the attached folds.
In other respects this form of the invention is similar to that previously shown and like reference numerals identify like parts in each of the several views.
In the modification of the invention shown in Fig. '7 each of the bust cups I2 is formed with separate sections of material lZa, I 21), I20, and 1201, with their adjacent edges connected together and each of the sections is provided with pleats, gatherings, and folds l4 extended horizontally.
In other respects this form of the invention is similar to that previously shown and like reference numerals identify like parts in each of the several views.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
1. A garment with adjustable cup sizes having a garment body formed with openings for bust cups with cloth bust cups secured at their edges to the edge portions of said openings, means for permitting said bust cups to naturally engage comfortably about busts of difierent depths, comprising a'plurality of spaced curvilinear-expandable folded portions formed in said bust cups to expand and fit and support the busts about which they are engaged.
2. A garment with adjustablelcupsizes.having,
permitting said bust cups to 'naturally "engage comfortably about busts of different depths, come prising a plurality of spaced curvilinear expandablev folded portions formed. in said bust cups-to expand and fit and supportthe. busts about which they are engaged,'.said folded portions, comprising vertically arranged. folds .formedin said bustv cups,
3. A garment." with adjustable. cup sizes having, a garment body. formed with openings for bust cups with cloth bust cups secured'attheiredges to the edge portions of said openings, meansfor permitting said bust cups to naturally engage comfortably about busts of different, depths,,comprising a plurality of spaced curvilinear expand- 4 able folded portions formed in said bust cups to expand and fit and support the busts about which they are engaged, said folded portions comprising horizontally arranged folds formed in said bust cups.
