GARMENT HANGER Filed. May 14, 1945 BLYTHE O. BLADES,
. INVENTOE.
Patented Apr. 29, 1947 UNITED STATES H PATENT OFFICE 9 Claims.
This invention relates to a, garment hanger.
More specifically. speaking, the invention pertains to that type of garment hanger which is adapted to suspend, in any extended condition and from a singlev hook, a complete suit consisting of a coat, a vest and a pair of trousers.
It is an object of the invention, to. provide, in a hanger of the kind just stated, an improved combination of rigid suspending frame designed forsupporting a coat and vest in an extended condition, an accessory clamping member connectable with said frame in such a manner as to be usable to clamp a pair of trousers or other garment supported on the frame, thus to safe,- guard against such garment becoming dislodged from its supported position,
Another object is to provide a garment hanger of the hook-supported loop type with an improved detachable garmentegripping means whereby one or more garments supported by the hanger will be securely held thereon while being transported, for example to and from a cleaners shop.
Additional objects relate to extreme simplicity of structure and to an improved means for detachably connecting the clamping bar to the main hanger member.
Other objects, advantages and features of invention will hereinafter appear.
Referring to the accompanying drawing which illustrates what at present is considered to be a preferred embodiment of the invention,
' Fig. 1 is a perspective view wherein the hanger iscompletely shown, but on a smaller scale than in the remaining views, the lower portion of a garment supported thereby being broken away in order to contract the view.
Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the hanger per se upper and intermediate portions thereof bein broken out in order to contractthe view,
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the structure shown in Fig, 2, except that parts are shown in section.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view showing two fragments of the hanger, one of said fragments having through it a locking aperture and the other a male looking member insertable into said aperture and turnable therein to a locked position.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the main hanger member 5 comprises an elongated strap metal loop having an upper run 6 furnished centrally with a suspendin hook I, the outer end portions of this run being shown downwardly inclined to some extentto the points where they ,join the'relatively short, vertical end runs 8. "The lower run 9, unlike the remaining. portion of.
the loop 5, has its breadth extending vertically when the device is inits suspended position, this positioning of said run. 9 being accomplished by giving it a ninety degree twist adjacent to its ends as indicated at l0 and H. It is. an, ad.- vantage to position. said lower run 9 in the man'- ner just stated so that the trousers I2 or any other garment may be more conveniently looped therearound, but it is immaterial whether or not the twists l0 and l l are located at the precise point shown. They would produce the same result if located in the lower portions of the runs 8.
That end portion of the loop memberv 5 which is furnished with the twist H i provided beyond the latter twist with a part M which abuts fiatwise against and. is spotwelded to the adjacent end portion, of the aforesaid horizontal run 9, and thispart terminates in an outwardly directed latch hook l5 having an upwardly directed nose IS, the concavity'or recess in the hook formed by making a substantially rectangular cut-out I! in the upper edge portion of the strap metal adjacent to said nose IS.
A garment-gripping strap metal; arm (8 is provided to cooperate with the lower run 9' of the loop member 5, this arm having at one end a narrowed hasp portion l 9'positioned for latching onto the hook I5, the narrowing of this end portion of the arm I8 being effected by making a rectangular corner cut-out 29 into its lower edge. Said hasp portion I9 is deflected outwardly to cause it to cooperate more efficiently with the hook l5.
The bar I8, adjacent to the end thereof opposite to its hasp I9, is provided with a T-shap'ed extension consisting ofa neck-portion 2| and a flattened head 22, this extension being thus shaped by reason of opposed rectangular cutouts 23 being cut into opposite edges of this part of the strap metal. The neck 2| is right-angularly bent at about its midlength so as to offset the head 22 in the manner shown, in order that said head may interlock within a longitudinal slot 25 provided in the midwidth portion of the strap metal run 9 adjacent to its twist ID. The
garment-gripping. arm 8 may. .beput inplaceito the suspended position, the hasp portion I9 of the,
arm then being crowded in behind the nose l6 of the hook I5. I
It will also be seen that the hasp portion l9 of the mounted clamp arm I8 may readily be" moved upwardly out of the locked position by the thumb or a finger of the same hand that is gripping and supporting the hanger, thus releasing a gripped garment so that it may be removed by the other hand of the operator. As a result of the ofiset positioning of the hanger portions l5 and 22 there is provided between the mounted arm l8 and the horizontal hanger run 9 a clearance of suflicient width to accommodate a single thick garment or several thinner ones. Also theresiliency of the hanger-portions at each side of this clearance permits its width to be increased, if necessary. In Fig. 3 thedotted lines show the outswung position of the parts 9 and I8 when a garment of considerable thickness is gripped between them.
What is claimed is:
