UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
J ARTHUR ADAMSON, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
SUSPENDERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 241,904, dated May 24, 1881.
Application filed March 31, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.- v
Be it known that I, J. ARTHUR ADAMSON, a citizen of the United States, residin gin Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, haveinvented an Improvement in Button-Loops for Suspenders, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to so construct abutton-loop for suspenders, 860., that the same can be applied to or removed from the button more readily than usual; and this object I attain in the manner which I will now proceed to describe, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front view of my improved button-loop for suspenders, 850.; Fig. 2, a rear view of the same, and Figs. 3 and 4 views showing modifications of my invention.
A represents part of the Waist-strap of a pair of suspenders, or it may be part of any supporting-strap which it is desirable to connect to a button on some article of apparel.
Bis a loop, preferably of sheet metal, provided at the upper end with a projecting stem, a, having wings I), which are bent as shown in Fig. 2, sofas to clamp the end of the strap, the stem d and wings I) thus forming a clasp, D, integral with the loop. The continuity of the loop is interrupted at one side, so as to form a lateral opening, 6?, and this opening is partly closed by the bent end of a spring, 12, secured to the rear face of the loop in such a manner that the end of the spring "is free to yieldin either direction in order to permit the passage of the shank of the button through the openingdin applyingthe loop to or removing it from said button.
The preferable method of securing the spring to the loop is bystriking up lugs i from the metal of which the loop is composed and then bending these lugs over the spring, one lug being on one side and the other on the opposite side of said spring, as shown in Fig. 2.
It will be noticed that a simple lateral movement is all that is required in order to effect the application of the loop to or its removal from the button, and when the shank of the button occupies the central opening of the loop it is below the opening (I, so that the spring is relieved from strain and the accidental detaching of the loop from the button is prevented.
Different arrangements of springs may be used in connection with the loop. For instance, in Fig. 3 both ends of the spring are free and almost meet in the center of the opening d, and in Fig. 4 the free end of the spring is adapted to partly close an inclined opening near the upper end of the loop. The spring may completely close the opening, it desired, or more than one spring may be used.
1 claim as my invention- 1. The within-described button-loop, said loop having its continuity interrupted to form the opening 01, which is closed or partly closed by a spring or springs e, as set forth.
2. The combination of the loop B, having an opening, 01, with the spring a, secured to the loop by means of bent lugs i, forming part of the loop, as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
J. ARTHUR ADAMSON.
