This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a hair curler.

More specically, the invention proposes the construction of a hair curler having a strip-like flexible body preferably formed of leather and which is provided with a slot through which .the hair is adapted to be passed prior to being rolled upon the body, and which is provided at one end with a knob-like end portion and at the other end with an opening with the arrangement between the knob-like end and the opening being such that a 45 twist of the knob-like end portion relative to the opening will permit the knob'to be passed through the opening so that when the knob turns back the said 45, the knob will enn gage the edges of the opening and maintain the ends in their engaged position to retain the hair in its twisted position on the body.

Heretofore, hair curlers of this type have been constructed but the relationship between the knob-like end portion and the opening has been such that a 90 twist has been required to engage the knob-like end portion with the opening. 'This is highly objectionable in that curlers of this type are subjected to the destructive action of waving lotions and other similar liquids used on the hair during .the curling process, which tends to break down and stiffen the leather from which the curlers are formed. The 90 twist which was required in the prior art to engage the end portions has `caused the life of these prior art curlers to be materially reduced in that the excessive twisting caused the leather material to crack and break. By reducing the twist which is required to engage the end portions of the curler I believe that my construction will increase the life of these curlers and enable them to be used many times over in curling operations.

A further object of the invention proposes forming the openings in the end of the strip-like exible body of different shapes, each of which requires merely a 45 twist of the end portions when being engaged.

Still another object of the invention proposes the provision of reinforcement shell-like members which are adapted to be mounted upon the ends of the strip-like flexible body for reinforcing these portions to materially increase the life of the curler.

For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended ,claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

The hair curler, according to this invention, includes a strip-like flexible body It. This striplike body I0 is preferably formed of leather or similar material and is provided with a longitudinally extending intermediate slot I I. This slot II is preferably of zig-zag shape and is adapted to be spread, permitting the ends of a strand of hair to be connected upon the body and be engaged into the slot. The zig-zag formation of the slot II tends to grip the ends of the strand of hair and limit them against moving relative to the strip-like body and prevent them from `co1- lecting at one end of this slot.

One end of the strip-like flexible body I0 is formed with a knob-like end portion I2 which is engageable when twisted through 45 with an opening I3 formed in the opposite end of the body I0. The opening I3 is square and its dimension between diagonal corners is substantially equal to the Width of the knob-like end portion I2 so that the knob-like end portion may be easily passed through the opening when twisted through the said 45. After being passed through the opening I3 the knob-like end portion I2 may be twisted back through the said 45 which will cause the edges of the knob-like end portion I2 to engage the edges of the opening I3 and maintain the ends of the engaged position shown in Fig. 3, to prevent the strip-like body from turning to retain the hair which was twisted thereon, in position.

In the modification of the invention shown in Fig. 4 the construction of the hair curler is similar to that previously described, except that the body thereof is formed with a plurality of slitsl I 4 which extend from the opening I3 and which add to the resiliency of the material surrounding the opening I3 to permit the knoblike end portion I2 to be more easily engaged therewith. In Fig. 5 still another modification of the invention is shown in which the opening' I 3' is in the form" of a cross which will permit the knob-like end portion I2 to be engaged through either arm thereof when twisted through substantially 45. In other respects this form of the invention is similar to that previously shown andY like reference numerals identify like'parts in'each of the several Views.

In Fig. 6 still another modification of the invention is shown having an opening I3" of a -different shape showing a larger area and a joined smaller area. In other respects this form of the invention is similar to that previously shown and like reference numerals identify lik parts in each of the several'views.

In Fig. 7 the opening I3' in the strip-like body I is shown formed by a larger opening I3mit and an adjacent smaller opening ISM. The slot Ila is shown to form a straight line.

In Fig. 8 the opening ISd in the strip-like body Il! Vis shown to be round and the end portion I2d is in spear form. The spear end portion is shown to be thinner to permit its folding while it is inserted in the round opening i3d. The slot IId `in this form of the invention' is also shown to form a straight line'.

In Figs. 9 and l0 another modified form of the invention is shown in' which reinforcement shell-like members I are mounted on the ends of the strip-like body Ii over the knob-like end portion I2 and the opening I3. These reinforcement shell-like members I 'are preferably formed of plastic material and on diametrically opposite sides are formed with inwardly'exI-.ending leaf spring members I6 which have inwardly projecting portions I'I. These inwardly Vprojecting'portions Il are adapted to engage complementary niches ljcut in the 'sides ofthe flexible body" III for iixedly retaining the'shell-like members I5 vin' position'upon the ends of the strip-like body'Y I0.

The opening I3 inthis form'ofthe' invention is extended through its adjacent shell-like member l5 and is of a size to admit the knob-like end portion I2 together with its reinforcement member I5, which is mounted thereon. In other respects this form of the invention is similar to that previously shown' and like reference numerals identify like parts in each of the several views.

While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not' limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:

1; In a hair curler having a strip-like flexible body formed with a slot through which the hair is passed, a knob-like end portion at one end of said flexible body engageable when twisted 45 through anopening in the other end of'said body and engaging the edges of said opening when turned back said 45 and reinforcement shelllike members mounted upon the ends of said iiexible body.

2. In' a hair curler having a strip-like iiexible body formed with a zig-zag slot through which the hair is passed, a knob-like end portion at one end of said flexible body engagcable when twisted 45 through an opening in the other end of said body and engaging the edges of said opening when turned back said 45 and reinforcement shell-like members mounted upon the ends of said flexible body.
