Description
Dec. 10, 1946. J. KLOP OVIC AUTOMATIC NUT GUN Filed Aug. 15, 1944 Patented Dec. 10, 1946 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2,412,275 AUTOMATIC NUT Gun Joseph Klopovic, Euclid, Ohio Application August 15, 1944, Serial No. 549,525
7 Claims. 1
This invention relates to wrenches, and more particularly to magazine wrenches adapted for use in the rapid assembly or disassembly of parts secured by bolts or nuts associated with threaded studs and adapted to accommodate a plurality of such nuts.
An object of the present invention is to provide a tool of the character indicated, so constructed that in the application of a nut to a bolt or threaded stud the nut can be driven home and properly seated without regard to whether the bolt or stud projects beyondthe outer face of the nut without any possibility of the bolt threading into the next adjacent nut in the magazme.
A further objector the invention is to provide a tool of the type indicated adapted to feed the supply of nuts forwardly in proper alignment and without possibility of jamming in the tool.
Further objects will appear in the course of the following detailed description.
, The invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement, and combinations of parts hereinafter more particularly described and claimed.
One sheet of drawings accompanies this specifica'tion as part thereof, in which like reference characters indicate like parts throughout.
In the drawingi Figure 1 is a longitudinal medial cross section through the improved tool; a
Figure 2 is a fragmentary, enlarged scale, medial longitudinal cross section through the forward end of the..tool, showing the forward nut in engagement with a bolt; and
Figure 3 is a transverse cross section taken on line 33 of Figure l.
Referring to the drawing, the tool comprises a barrel I having one end closed by a cap 2 threaded or otherwise secured on the end of the barrel, the cap 2 being rigidly associated with a clutch member 3 of conventional design, the Other member 4 of the clutch being adapted to be connected to a flexible rotary drive shaft by means of which the barrel I may be rotated on its 1ongitudinal axis as desired.
A cylindrical hand clasp 25 is rotatably mounted on the forward end of the barrel and secured against longitudinal motion thereon as by a pin 23 having its inner end engaging an annular groove 21 in the barrel 1. From the foregoing, it will appear that the tool may be held by the operator by means of a freely rotatable sleeve or hand grip 25 adjacent its forward upper end and directed toward a bolt as desired, while the rotati-on of thebarrel can be readily controlled by.
the'clutch member 3.
Adjacent. the closed end of the barrel a restricted bore 6 is provided as by a suitable bushing'5 and in the bore 6 is slidably located the enlarged end 8 of a'guide rod 9 axially positioned with respect to the barrel l. spring ill is enclosed between the cap 2 and the enlarged head 8 operating to force the guide rod 9 toward the open end of the barrel I.
Within the barrel I is positioned a spiral spring,
31 circling the guide rod 9, therear end of spring 31 bearing against bushing 5 and the forward end of the spring 3| bearing against a follower having a hub 29 slidable on guide rod 9, this extending slots 2| cut in the outer face of the barrel.
Normally the tool with a supply of nuts in the magazine occupies the position illustrated in Fi ure 1 with the balls 23 resiliently restraining the passage of the outermost nut.
To prevent the bolt or threaded stud from picking up more than the outermost nut, the guide rod 9 has its forward end provided with a bore in which are seated two spacedsprings l2 having their rear ends secured to guide rod 9 as in slots provided in a bushing l I. The forward free ends of the springs l2 are turned outwardly and formed as thread grippers |3--l3 extending" tnr'ougnradial holes I'4--l4 adjacent the forward endo'f the guide rod 9. The forward bore of the guide rod is closed as by cap l5 screw threaded into the bore, this cap l5 having a central hole to slidably receive the stem I! which has upon its rear end a cam member I8 and upon its forward end a bolt engaging face plate IS. A spiral spring 29 is interposed between the bolt engaging plate [9 and the forward end of the cap [5 tending normally to force the plate I9 forwardly and thus retract the cam I8 from between the spring members l2, thus permitting the thread grippers I3--l3 to retract within the guide rod 9 and release the adjacent nut. In operation, as the bolt B threads through the outermost nut its end will contact the plate l9 and force the cam member I8 rearwardly, thus pressing the springs l2 apart and forcing the gripper members l3-I3 A compression.
. 3 into locking engagement with the threads of the next adjacent nut to the rear, thus locking said next adjacent nut with respect to the guide rod 9 and holding that nut and all other nuts in the magazine in position. When the plate I9 has been forced back to its limit, the outermost nut will be forced forwardly against the pressure of balls- 23 until properly seated.
The inner bore of thebarrel I will, of course, be shaped to cpn'f'orm with the contour ,of the 'n uts: to be used andsizedtopermit the nuts sliding freely within the bore upon the guide rod 9. To
bolt or stud, the outer end of the bore of barrel I can slide, a spring pressed follower slidable on said may be tapered slightly inwardly as indicated at 33 so as to permit a rocking of the rear-end of the outermost nut to facilitate its engagement with the bolt threads.
Various modifications-in the mechanical form and 'co'nstruction'of' the various parts will readily suggest themselves to those skilled in the art but all within the scope of the present invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. A magazine wrench comprising a barrel, means Within the barrel to force nuts therein to- Ward an open end of the barrel, means at said open' end to resiliently retain the outermost nut and nut-gripping means within the barrel having an operating part normally positioned within the bore of the outermost nut arranged to bexengaged by the end of a bolt threading through said outermost nut toiactuate the nut gripping means to ,lock in position the next adjacent nut and occlude the bolt from said next adjacent nut; f I
2. The device of'claim 1 is which thenut engaging-means operated by the entering bolt comprises nut'gripping members and the operating part thereof comprises a slidable member having a bolt engaging face and means for forcing thenut gripping members into .engagementwiththe adjacent nut to lock the nut in position and limit the movement of the slidable member.
3; "Ihe'idevice' of claiml' in which the nutengagingmeans operated by the entering bolt-'com-- prises oppositely disposed spring members secured by their rear-ends to a centering member and,
having their forward free ends outturned to .en-
gage the threads of an adjacent. nut, associated? with'a slidable member having a cam shaped part adapted to force the free ends of the spring me'mbers apart and a bolt engaging face directed toward the openrend of the barrel.
4; The device of. claim 1 in which the nut engaging means operated by the enteringboltcomprises oppositely disposed spring members secured facilitate the application of the tool in situations axial guide to engage the innermost nut, oppositewhere it cannot be held in true alignmentwith the: "1 13'. disposed spring fingers secured to a forward part of the axial guide, the forward ends of said fingers bent outwardly to form thread engaging parts, a member slidable in the forward end of the axial guide having a rearwardly directed cam part adapted to press said spring fingers apart and a forwardly directed bolt engaging face'of a size to occlude an entering bolt from a nut opening. I 6. A magazine wrench comprising a barrel having an open end, an axially disposed slidablev guide member within the barrel on which nuts 7. A magazine wrench comprising an open ended barrel, means adjacent the open end to resiliently restrain the passage of nuts therethrough, a slidable axially disposed guide within the barrel, spring means biasing the guide toward the open end of the barrel, a follower slidable on the guide, spring means'biasing the follower to--' ward the open end of the barrel, spring fingerscarried by the guide having their free forward ends outwardly bent to form thread engaging members, a slidable member mounted on the forward end of the guide formed with a rearwardly directed cam partadapted to wedge the spring fingers into nut engaging position and a forwardly directed 'bolt engaging face,
spring meansvbiasing the slidable member into nonoperative position, 'a hand ,grasp freely. ro-
JOSEPH KLOPOVIC."
