My invention relates to a new and useful toy.
The objects of my invention are to provide a toy which will simulate a gun cr cannon and which may be actuated either manually or by wheels arranged to travel over a floor or walk; also to provide a mechanical movement applicable to a variety of u'ses.
I accomplish these objects by the means shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a top or plan View of one form of my apparatus, with a portion of the frame and handle in section on the line I--I of Figure 2;

Figure 3 is a top View of another form of my apparatus in which the handle is applied separate from the actuating mechanism;
Figure 4 is a side elevation of Figure 3 but with the near side wheel omitted; and
Figure 5 is a sectional elevation of a modied form` of my apparatus in which projectiles may be utilized and fired from the gun barrel.
In the simplest form my apparatus comprises a frame I which may be of wood, metal or other suitable material in the form of a yoke with hubs 2 2 formedintegral therein in Iwhich an axle shaft 5 is mounted. The axle shaft is revolvable in the hubs 2 and may have rigidly secured to the outer ends thereof supporting wheels 4 and 5, each hub 2 being formed with a bore 3 in which the axle shaft 6 may be rotatably secured.
Midway of the shaft 6 a retractor I5 is secured which may be formed as a rectangular plate or as a single or double yoke of metal rod and secured `in the axle shaft by a presst or` by 'set screws B I or other suitable means.
To the frame I a handle 'I' is secured by presst or other suitable means. The handle l may be a hollow metal tube or barrel or may be a wooden bar with a bore 'I.I formed therein extending'frcm the lower end of the handle for any desired distance. In the bore of the barrel a rod or plunger IIJ is slidingly mounted and the lower end of the plunger Il) is slotted to receive the outer end end of a bar I2 which is secured to the lower end of the plunger by a pivot pin I I, or other suitable means.
l The lower end of the bar i2 has points `I3-I3 extending upwardly and downwardly therefrom, with the intermediate portion of the bar forminga head spaced a short distance from the periphery of the shaft 5, the points I3 being arranged in a position to be contacted bythe retractor I5 as it revolves and carriedtherewith as it` revolves until the bar I2 reaches its rearmost point of travel and comes in contact with the shaft 6, at which time the retractor will leave contact with the point I3 releasing the bar and permitting the plunger Ill to return to its normal position. The points I3 may extend both upwardly and downwardly from the bar I2 to be caught by the yoke I5 when revolving in either direction and the bar retracted as described.
In order to hold the axis of the bar I2 in line with the center of the shaft 6, I form the front end of the bar I2 with a flat face and provide a flat-faced plug I 5 to bear against it. The plug i 6 is slidingly mounted in a bore I6.II and a compression spring I'I is mounted in the bore I6.I to bear lightly against the forward end of the plug I6.
The plunger IE! is provided with a pin 22 which is slidingly mounted in a slot 1.2 formed in the handle I and acts to limit the longitudinal travel of the plunger I 0.
The outer ends of the pin 22 engage a ring 23 slidingly mounted upon the outside of the handle l. Additional rings 23.I and 23.2 extend around the handle and are freely slidable longitudinally thereon.
A tension spring I9 is fitted in the bore 1.I and its rear end is pivotally united to the plunger IIJ and its front end pivotally united to the handle 'I by a pin 20 or other suitable means.
In the operation of my device, as the wheels 4 and 5 are rolled along the door, they rotate the shaft 6 which carries with it the retractor I5 and as it revolves, its ends successively Contact the `points or extensions I3 and retract the bar l2, thus exerting tension on the spring I9 to draw it to its designed limit of extension, at which point the yoke of the retractor I5 by its further revolution releases the contacted point I3 and permits the Ispring I9 to forcibly and quickly return the plunger Iii to its normal position, carrying with it the pin 22 which carries the ring 23. The ring 23 then forcibly strikes the ring 23.I and impels the rings 23.I and 23.2 outwardly upon the handle to a distance commensurate with the force applied by the spring I 9. If the handle 'I is held in an inclined or vertical position, the rings will then descend to their atrest position ready to be actuated again by the next half revolution of the retractor I5 and this operation will be repeated at rates depending upon the 'speed with which the wheels 4 and 5 are drawn along the floor or walk.
The frame I, shaft B, and wheels 4 and 5, are made of suicient weight and the wheels are given a peripheral surface such as rubber or other frictional material which will cause them to contact the floor, carpet or walk, with suflicient pressure and friction to cause the wheels to revolve and carry the shaft 6 against the force of the spring I9.
In Figures 3 and 4 alternative forms of this device are shown in which the mechanism above described is arranged in connection with a gun barrel 28 having a bead or stop ring 2l formed at its front end 'which Will stop the rings 23.i and 23.2 at a given point of its travel.
In Figures 3 and 4 the handle 'l is shown attached to the frame l by a sleeve 25 united to a plate 24 and secured to the frame by screws or` extent the burst of flame accompanying the discharge of a gun.
When desired to simulate the action of a gun more closely, the bore "Ll may extend through the entire length of the barre1 28. The plunger Ii) may be formed with a rod HM extending forwardly therefrom entirely through the length of the spring land arranged to strike a' small ball or marble 33' as shown in vFigure 7.
In the wheeled form, with separate handle and gun barrel, the toy may be used as an imitation of mobile artillery.
Various modifications may be made in the form and arrangement of the parts of my apparatus without departing from the spirit of my invention and the actuating mechanism may be applied to various other uses, and I do not limit my 'claims to the precise'forms nor to the particular uses specified.
I claim:
1. A toy comprising a frame, a shaft revolvably mounted on the frame, a pair of spaced supporting wheels united to the shaft,v a retractor united to and rotating with the shaft and having an arm projecting radially therefrom, al hollow arm or barrel having one end secured to the frame and the other end extending outwardly therefrom, a
plunger slidingly mounted in the arm or barrel,
a bar having one end pivoted to one end of the plunger and its opposite end provided with a projection or catch arranged to be engaged and drawn backward by the rotating retractor to a predetermined point and then automatically lreleased from the retractor, a spring mounted in the hollow arm or barrel arranged to exert tension forwardly upon the plunger and to drive it forwardly when the bar is released from theretractor, and means to rotate the shaft.
2. A mechanism comprising supporting wheels, a shaft united to the wheels and revolvable therewith, a retractor united to the shaft and having arms4 projecting radially therefrom in opposite arm or tube having one end securedto the frame and the other end extending outwardly therefrom,'a rod slidingly mountedfor reciprocation in the tube, a bar having one end Ypivotally united to the rod and its opposite end provided with a projection or catch arranged to be engaged and drawn rearwardly by the retractor as it rotates with the shaft to a predetermined point and then automatically released from the retractor, a

A toyl mobile Iartillery unit comprising a pair of supporting Vwheels united by a shaft xed thereto and rotatable with the wheels, a frame mounted upon the shaft,v a barrel having one end secured by the frame and extending outwardly at a right angle to the shaft, ra plunger slidingly mounted in the barrel and spring-held in normal forward-position, coasting means mounted upon the shaft and the plunger arranged to interlmittently retract the plunger from its normal position and to release it at a given point.
11. A toy unit as described in claimlO, and rings slidingly` mounted upon the barrel, contacting means united to the plunger arranged to drivethe rings outwardly along the barrel when the plunger returns to normal position after each release. Y

A mechanism comprising supporting wheels, a shaft united to the wheels and revolvable therewith, a retractor united to the shaft and having arms projecting radially therefrom in opposite directions, a frame carried by the shaft, a hollow arm or tube having one end secured to the frame and the other end extending outwardly therefrom, a rod sldingly mounted for reciprocation in the tube, a bar having one end pivotally unitedto the rod and its opposite end provided with opposed projections arranged to be engaged and drawn rearwardly by the retractor as it rotates with the shaft to a predetermined point and then automatically released from the retractor, a spring mounted in the tube arranged to drive the rod forwardly when it is released from the retractor, and means to rotate the shaft.
14. In a toy, the combination with a hollow bar, of a plunger slidingly mounted within the hollow bar, a rod united to the plunger and extending rearwardly therefrom, a retractor revolvably mounted at a given space from the rear end of the bar, means to support the bar and the retractor in fixed relative position, means united to therear end of the rod arranged to be engaged by the retractor as it is revolved to draw the rod and plunger rearwardly for a predetermined distance and then to release the rod, resilient means united to the plunger and the bar to drive the plunger forward when the rod is released from the retractor and means to revolve the retractor.
