. Application "May 24, 1945, Serial N0..595,554 1 Claim. (01.2-83) This invention relates to garments, and more I particularly to those adapted for womens wear, such as pajamas, play-suits bathing suits, lounging and sleeping garmentsand other garments suitable for many purposes.
. One of the objects of the invention is to provide a garment of this general character which will be comfortable under various conditions of wear; which, will be of attractive appearance and will possess such fitting characteristics that it will readily adapt itself to figures of various contours and will permit comfortable wear during various activities.
More particularly, the invention contemplates the provision of a garment having an upper section, or trunk-enclosing portion, which constitutes an upward continuation of a lower garment such as slacks or shorts, said upward continuation being in the form of an elongated panel extending from one side of the lower garment, said panel being doubled upon itself over the shoulders of the wearer to thereby clothe the front as well as the back of the wearers body. The end portions of the panel project laterally and constitute extended tying elements around the waist of the wearer, said elements being detachably secured together at the back. This arrangement is such that freedom of the panel portion to rise or adjust itself vertically from the waist line, is provided, thus enabling the upper portion of the garment, made up of the aforementioned panel, to move with the body when the body performs various movements or engages in activities.
These and other objects are attained by the improved construction, a more particular description of which will hereinafter appear and be set forth in the claims appended hereto.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, in which Fig. 1 is a face view of the garment spread out fiatwisely and in fully open or extended position; Fig. 2 is a perspective view, showing how the garment appears when in position of wear; Fig. 3 is a front view of the garment, showing th upper panel portion transversely folded or doubled over upon itself, and Fig. 4 shows the rear of the garment as it appears in use.
In the drawings, l indicates the lower portion of the garment. In the embodiment shown, this part may be a bifurcated garment, such as the pair of slacks illustrated, or it may be a skirt, a pair of shorts or the like. This part of the garment is of conventional construction, and at the front it terminates at the waist line as indicated at 2. At the back, the slacks I are extended upw ardly point.
the garment is worn.
together at the V 2 in the form ofa continuous lengthy, panel-like extension 3, which may be pleated or gathered as at 4 where it joins the waist line of the slacks, to provide desirable fullness at this At a central point in the lengthy panel-like extension 3 is provided a neck opening 5 from which the slit 6 extends in a direction toward the free end 1 of the panel. Lateral tabs Band .9 extend from the sides of, the extension3, these parts providing short sleeve projections when Near the free end I of the panel extension 3 is provided a-pair .of laterally projecting wings iii and H which, when the garment is worn, are tied or otherwise secured back'of the body, as clearly seen in Fig. 4. l
As will be noted in Fig. 1, inturned triangular parts I2 and I3 unite the waist line of the slacks l with the panel extension 3 and located in .one
,of these parts, and extending :down into the .hip
portion of the slacks, may be provided a slide fastener IE! or other detachable fastening means, thus providing a closeable opening to facilitate the donning and removal of the garment. This fastening device can, if desired, be located at the center line M of the slacks, and will, of course, be of the concealed type.
From the foregoing, the operation of the garment will be readily understood. Assuming that the slacks portion of the garment has been donned in the conventional manner, the extended panel-like part 3 will then be located behind the wearer and will extend well over her head. It is doubled or transversely folded upon itself on the fold line I5 which constitutes theshoulder line of the garment. This will divide the panel 3 into the back section 23 and the front section It and will bring the section l6 down over the front or chest of the wearer to thereby extend over and clothe the front of the upper part of the body from the waist up. The head is thrust through the opening 5 and the garment at this time appears as in Fig. 3, with the end 1 of the panel disposed slightly below the waist line of the wearer and the tying wings l0 and II projected laterally. These ends l0 and H are brought around to the back of the body and are there tied together as indicated at I! in Fig. 4, and the donning of the garment is then complete.
It will be noted that other than the fastening device 19, no fastening elements, buttons or the like, are employed in the garment and that by merely drawing the wings or extensions l0 and H around to the back of the wearer to the exwill be noted that since the end 1 tent required to conform the panel portion 3 to the contour of the body, and then uniting the parts Ill and II at the rear, a close and conforming fit of the garment to the body is assured. It will be further observed that the edges 2| and 22 Of the panel 3 diverge and thus are angularly disposed when the garment is worn so that they overlap the edges of the triangular parts l2 and I3 and the sides of the body are thus enclosed-by parts which are more or less adjustable to a required overlap to thereby conform the garment to body lines. Moreover it of the panel 3, and which end of the panel is at this time located adjacent to the waist line of the garment, is free of attachment to the slacks portion of the garment with the result that this edge is free to rise when necessary under movements of the body. The result is that binding and constriction of the upper portion of the garment on the body will not occur due to this self-conforming disposition of the top portion of the garment. The overlap of the waist portion of the slacks by the edge 1 is such that this edge 1 isfree to rise to a considerable extent to adjust the front upper part of the garment to bodily contours as well as to permit it to rise during vigorous bodily movements, without the possibility of a gap occurring between the edge 1 and the top of the slacks at the front of the garment.
Theconstruction of the garment is such that the garment may be speedily donned and re moved; the adjustability of the upper portion enables the garment to be fitted to persons of different size and girth without binding or constriction and thus comfort during Wear is assured. 7
While I have shown a single embodiment of the invention, it is obvious that various modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention. The portion of the garment herein shown as slacks may be a skirt or shorts; the fastening device, or so-called zipper, may be located in a position other than that disclosed, and various trimmings, additions and embellishments may be added to the garment to lend attractiveness and style to it and generally enhance its appearance, these touches being omitted from the drawings in order to simplify the illustration to the constructional details which constitute the essence of the invention. It is also to be observed that while I have shown the 3 as arising from the top of the slacks at the rear thereof and the panel adapted to be doubled over and brought down over the front of the body, this arrangement may be reversed. That is to say, the panel extension may be arranged to rise from the front of the slacks rather than from the back, and be brought down over the back of the wearer, and the tying ends brought around to the front and secured together thereat. These and various other modifications are contemplated as being within the scope of the invention and within theterms of the claim appended hereto. i
What I claim-is: A garment of the character described comprising, a lower garment portion in the form 01' trousers for covering the lower part of the body downwardly from the waistline, an upper portion secured at the waistline to the back of the lower garment and having infolded parts secured to the front of the lower garment adjacent to the hips, said upper portion having a substantially centrally disposed neck opening and beingof substantially T-shape and thus provided at one end with lateral .tying'extensions to be'extended about the waist of the wearer below the upper end of the lower garment part and attached together.
