Description

I JLW. SNYDER. Street Crossing Protector for Elevated Railways. 'No. 240,618;v 'P a'tente d Apri 26,1881,
(N9. Model) UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JESSE W. SNYDER, OF SARATOGA SPRINGS, NEW YORK.
STREET-CROSSING PROTECTOR FOR ELEVATED RAILWAYS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 240,618, dated April 26, 1881.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 'I, JEssE W. SNYDER, of Saratoga Springs, in the county of Saratoga and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Street-Crossing Protectors for Elevated Railways; and I do declare the following is a true and accurate description thereof, and that the invention has not, to m yknowledge, been in use in the United States, nor been patented or used in any foreign country.
The object of myinvention is for the protection of persons passing beneath an elevated railway from all disagreeable matter falling from the passing trains and the structure above.
It consists of a metal plate of an inverted- V shape, provided with gutters upon its edges and spouts connecting therewith and sufficiently broad to protect the street-crossing from falling matter, and is connected to the railway above by being suspended by metal rods.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my invention as connected or attached to an elevated railway. Letter on represents street-crossing protector. Letter b represents gutter. Letter 0 represents spout leading from gutter for the purpose of carrying off all matter falling from above. Letter (1 Application filed July 26, 1880. (No model.)
represents fastenin gs of protector as attached to structure above.
Fig. 2 represents a sectional view of my in-' vention.
My invention consists of a metal plate of an inverted-V shape, for the purpose of protecting the street-crossings beneath an elevated railway, and is suspended from the structure thereof. I
I attach the protectors, by means of iron rods, to the frame or supports of the track of an elevated railway, so that the protectors may fully cover the street-crossing beneath.
The protectors have gutters along each side, and have spouts connected therewith at diag- -onal corners, for the purpose of carrying oft all matter caught therein.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination with an elevated railway, a protector for street-crossings consisting of a metal plate of an inverted-V shape, provided with gutters along its edges, and spouts connecting therewith, the whole being suspended from the railway structure, as and for the purpose set forth.
JESSE W. SNYDER.
