ELASTIC SUPPORT FOR SLEEVES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent' N0. 240,471, dated April 19, 1881. Application filed February 21, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. SMITH, of Ansonia, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented an Improvement in Elastic Supporters for Sleeves, &c., of which the following is a specification.
Sleeve-supporters have been made with clamps at opposite ends of elastic wire helices, and in some instances tapes have been employed within Wire helices, to determine the length to which the helix may be extended. In elastics of this character ditficulty has arisen from the clamps at the ends of the helix not being in line with each other, and from the tapes becoming disconnected from the metal.
In my improvement an extension-slide is used to connect the clasps and keep them in line, and this slide is within the helix, and serves to limit the amount to which the helix maybe distended. The clasps are made with projecting tongues, that pass through the eyes of the slide and helix, -and are turned over for firmly connecting the parts, thereby rendering it unnecessaryto provide an open eye on the slide, or on the end of the helix, and insuring the proper alignment of the clasps.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the extension-slide. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the clasp complete, and Fig. 3 represents the clasp and its tongue separately.
The extension-slide is made of two strips or wires of metal, a and b. At their outer ends are the loops or eyes 0 d, and the bodies lap upon each other, and the lipsc', at the inner end of the strip a, are bent around the strip b, and the lips e, at the inner end of the strip 1), are bent around the strip a, so that one part will slide upon the other freely; but the lips prevent the strips or wires from separating, and limit the movement of one slide upon the other. These slides are preferably made of strips of sheet metal, as shown; butthey may be of wire, with eyes on the inner ends, through whichpassthe adjacentwires,iustead ofthelips upon the sheet metal. These extension-slides 4 5 are within the helix h, and the length of the helix is such that when the extension-slides and helix are drawn out together the helix will not be unduly strained, and the extensionslide will form a stop to limit the motion. The end coils of the helix are bent at right angles to their normal position to form eyes, by which the helix is connected to the clasps m n at the respective ends of the elastic supporter, and the eyes 0 d of the extension-slides, being also 5 connected to the clas ps, serve to keep the clasps in their proper position in relation to each other.
The clasps are to be of any usual or desired character except that, instead of having a hole at the back end for the elastic to be attached to, there is a tongue, 0, that projects sufficiently to be threaded into the loops of the helix and extension-slide, respectively, and then bent back upon itself, in the form shown by dotted lines in Fig. 3, to make an eye that contains the loops of the helix and slide, and by this means the clasps are kept in proper relativeposition to each other.
If desired, one of the slides may be made double and the other slide be placed between the two bars, and the stops or lips will be provided to limit the motion.
I claim as my invention- The combination, with a helix and clasps connected thereto at the respective ends, of a metallic slide within the helix composed of two pieces, the outer end of each piece being'connected to the helix or clasp, and the inner end grasping and sliding upon the other piece, so as to form a stop to limit the distention of the helix, substantially as set forth.
