2 Claims. 1
- This invention relates to improvements in a respiratory filtering devic and particularly to improvements on applicants copending application Serial Number 408,627 and to improvements in the replaceable filtering pad used therewith.
The principal object of this invention is the pr vision of a respiratory filtering device that is inexpensive to manufacture yet sturdy of construction and easy to operate.
Another object of this invention is the provision of a filtering device, as above set forth, with which an improved filter pad may be employed to provide a definite seal around the nose and mouth of the user.
Another object of this invention is the provision of a filtering device that will conform with the contour of the face of the user around the nose and mouth without uncomfortably clamping itself against the users face.
A further and specific object is the provision of a replaceable filter pad for use with a respiratory filtering device that will not bunch and will lie fiat between the device and the face of the user to form a perfect seal against air passing therearound to the nose and mouth of the wearer.
Other objects and advantages of the present invention should be readily apparent by reference to the following specification considered in conjunction with the accompanying drawing forming a part thereof and it is to be understood that any modifications may be made in the exact structural details there shown and described, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from or exceeding the spirit of the invention.
In the drawing:
Fig. l is a front elevation of a respiratory filtering device embodying th improvements of this invention.
Fig. 2 is a, vertical sectional view through the device taken on line 2-2 on Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view through the device taken on line 33 on Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary elevational view of a portion of the device as seen from line 4-4 on Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view through the clamp of the device taken on line 5-5 on Fig. l.
Fig. 6 is a plan view of the filter pad as used in the filtering device of this invention.
Fig. '7 is an edge view of the filter pad illustrated in Fig. 6.
Throughout the several views of the drawing similar reference characters are employed .to denote the same or similar parts. i
The respiratory filter of this invention comprises a, body member ID of a general U shape having in effect arms H and I2 connected together by a base portion l3. The outer edges of the arms II and I2 are substantially regular in outline while the inner or opposed edges of said arms are cut away as at I4 and I5 to outline the nose and mouth of th user. The said contoured edges of the arms are provided with an upturned flange 16 so that a rounded edge is presented to the face instead of a sharp edge of the sheet metal from which the body member I0 is stamped.
The upper ends of the arms II and I2 are connected by an elastic member II which as illustrated in the drawing is elastic fabric. In practice the elastic member I! follow the contour of the wearers nose with end of the arms lying at the base of the nose.
As seen in Fig. 3 the mask body I 0 is transversely curved so as to conform to the curvature of the face of a user. In order to hold the mask in position the arms H and I2 are respectively provided with a piercing resulting in an upturned hook I 8 and Hi to which, respectively, is removably attached a coupling 29 and 2| having between them an elastic mask attaching bank or strip 22 which encircles the back of a users head.
Cooperating with the mask body [0 is-a wire frame 23 having, in front elevation, the form illustrated in Fig. 1 which, as will be noted, has an outline substantially identical with the opening of the U frame. The wire frame 23 comprises an arcuate transverse portion 24 from which depends sides 25 and 26 contoured similarly to the. contours l4 and I5 of the arms H and I2. Inte-- gral with and extending from the wire frame sides 25 and 26 are arms 21 and 28 which project toward one another for a distance and then are rearwardly directed as at 29, The rear end of the arms 2! and 28 bend downwardly to provide legs 30 and 3| with theirlower ends outwardly projected to form trunnions 32 and 33, as will later be made clear.
The base l3 of the filte body member lll substantially centrally thereof is offset to provide a channel 34 of a width substantially equal to the distance between the wire frame legs 3|] and 3|. The sides 35 and 3B of the offset 34 are adapted to be engaged by the wire frame legs and the said sides are each provided with an aperture 31 through which projects the trunnions 32 and 33.
By this construction the wire frame 23 is adapted to be oscillated from the position illustrated in full lines in Fig. 2 to the position illustrated in dotted lines therein. With the frame in the dotted line position of Fig. 2 a, filtering pad 38, of Figs. 6 and 7, may be placed on the underside of the filter body for subsequent positioning. The wire frame 23 is oscillated from its dotted line position to the solid line position of Fig, 4 thereby. positioning the filter pad 38 outwardly of the nose andzlmouth of :a wearer while'l' having ,the marginal portion of the pad 38 between the filter bod portion In and face.
In order to retain the Wire frame 23 in its oper I ative position use is made of a--1ocking devica illustrated most clearly in Fig. 4. The locking device comprises a locking membereoflzsubstans; tially T shaped formation comprising. a cross member 39 providing arms 40""an'd 4| "with a tongue 42 depending from the cross amembe'ri' from between the arms 40 and M. The ends of the tarmssdflland .4 I are. upwardly ,bent or arched as at 43 to lie on thelupperrsurfaces of the legs and 3|. whenclamping the-wire framein position. l In=orderuto bscillatetheclamping lmemberit iswconnected bya riv'etw 44 to thesbaseof the offset 34.
The. filter pad :38,Las. noted. above. engages with the .undersurface .of the vfilter body .10 and "the exceptior.beinglsomewhat larger. in area. Ex-;
tending into the. pad from .its: ;lower edge a are, a pair of cuts 46 and providing-between them a tonguelMiw In practice they tongue 48 isdrawn down between the .wire frame legs 30 and 3t afe fordinga means for holding the. pad in position duringlthe oscillation-of-the frame from thedottedto the solidiline;position.-of'Fig. '2 and-pre-' venting .abunchinglorl-upward movement of the saidpad by the-wire frame legs. which would occurif the pad were not provided With the tongue and, cuts and 41 whichlprovide passageways for thesaid legs.- Byw this construction :the seal at the lower'end of the mask body, or across-the base I3, is maintained instead of being broken as would be the case with a tongueless 'pada Th'efilter pad-38 maybe cut from any filtering material on the -market; such ass-is. illustrated;
comprisinga wovenlgauze like layer 49 and a fibrous or: cotton: layer 59. With this type.- of
filter the fibrous or cotton layer does the filtering and is of considerable thickness with the woven fabric layer 49 acting merely as a reinforcing backing for the filter.
For clearness in illustration the filter pad 38 is shown in certain of the views of the drawing in phantom lines.
From the foregoing it will be noted that there has been provided a respiratory filtering device comprisingx a single member: of sheet? material which may be-either metal-orpl'astic and of a general U shape to lie below and around the nose and mouth of a person. Associated with this singlewmember-is: a simple wire frame cap-able of being positioned ahead of the single sheet member for holding a filtering pad in front of the respiratory. organs. It will further be noted that there has been'provided a filtering pad of a 1. Ina device. of the class. described the "comet: bination ofla bodyv member hayingra centrallopening for. the respiratory organs comprising a base member and arms: attthe. ends of the baseI.mern-.
