To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHRISTOPHER 1. MIL- LER, of Richmond, in the county of Madison and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and Improved Shot and Powder Box, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a simple and convenient device for containing shot and powder, and for weighing and delivering the same without handling them.
The invention consists of a series of boxes, or a box subdivided into several compartments, whose bottoms incline to a common center. In the bottom of each box is an opening controlled by a slide, and beneath the boxes are inclined troughs or conductors, at the lowest point of which is fixed a receiver dependent from a spring-balance, the bottom opening of said receiver being controlled by a slide, the intention being to devote some of the boxes to powder and the others to shot of difi'erent grades, so that by opening the slide on a box the contents of that particular box, or as much of the contents as may be desired, will run out into the conductor and thence into the receiver, to be weighed, whence they may be delivered into any suitable bag, box, or other receptacle by opening the slide of said receiver.

In the drawings, A A represent suitable standardssupporting the boxes and their attachments. Upon and between these standards A A is'secured the V-shaped box B, its lower point being midway between the said standards A A, and beneath this box B is socured the conductor 0, sloping also from both sides to the center. The bottom of box B also slopes from the back to the front, as shown at a, for the more convenient discharge of its contents, and it is subdivided by vertical partitions a a into a series of com artmcnts B 7 7 designed for shot, each one of which has an opening, I). in the top for filling the said compartment B, and at its bottom a dischargepipe, 0, provided with a spring-slide, (1, ar-
ranged in a well-known manner, for opening and closing said discharge-pipe 0. These discharge-pipes c all open into the conductor 0.
At the lowercentral point ofthe conductor 0, and communicating therewith, is fixed a short depending tube, O, about and below which the receiver D is suspended from the top of the box B by a spiral spring, f, and connecting-rod g, provided with a lateral finger or pointer, h. the upperend of said spring f being secured to the lower central point of the top of the box B, as shown, and the lower end of the connecting-rod 9 being secured to a crossbar, It, that is fixed transversely in the receiver D. In the discharge pipe l, in the bottom of the receiver D, is an ordinary spring-slide, m, that controls the opening and closing of said discharge-pipe l. The end of the finger or pointer It extends forward through a vertical slot, 01, made in the front of the box B, through an attached index-plate, F, and on one side of this slot n are graduations, as shown at n, of the pound and fractions thereof.
It will be seen, then, that the receiver D and spring an d connecting-rod f g constitute scales G, by which the contents of the boxes B may be weighed as discharged.
Between the tops of the standards A A, and above and resting on the box B, are two nearlytriangular powder-boxes, E, whose bottoms are inclined downward and inward to correspond with the inclination of the box B, while their tops are on a horizontal plane. These boxes E are removable, and are provided at their lowest points with discharge-pipes 0, which are controlled by slides or levers p, as shown, and have on their tops screw-necks (1, through which said boxes E are filled, which .necks q are closed by screw-caps 1". When said boxes E are in position their discharge-pipes 0 project downward, through corresponding openings in the top (if the box B, into a vertical tube, 8, which communicates with the conductor 0 a little in rear of the tube 0.
The fronts of the boxes B and O are preferably of glass, as shown at u 4; respectively, that the contents may be readily seen and on or beneath each compartment B is a number indicating the size of shot therein contained.
By opening either of the slides 61 p the contents, or a portion of the contents, of the box or compartment to which said slide is attached will be discharged into the conductor 0, and through the tube G into the receiver D, and the weight thereof be indicated on the index F. Then, by openingthespring'slide m of the receiver D, the weighed shot or powder will be discharged.
This device is applicable to other articles besides powder and shot, and its general use in seed and grocery stores will save much time and labor.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A shot and powder box, B, secured between I 5 standards A, having the slope at, partitions a, with openings 1), and discharge-pipes 0, With the spring-slides d, the conductor 0, the scales and receiver D, suspended by spring and pointer-rod h from the box, and the right- 20 angled boxes E, all substantially as shown and described.
