MOUTH-PIECE FOR BRASS HORNS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 240,439, dated April 19, 1881.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, HARRY H. lVIOLAIN and A. RUSH, citizens of the United States, residing at Leon, in the county of Decatur and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mouth Pieces for Brass Horns; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

Our invention relates to an improvement in mouth-pieces for brass horns; and it consists in a mouth-piece constructed in sections, having an elastic ringinserted in the throat of one of the sections, as a means of enabling the musician to the more readily produce higher notes, increase the flexibility and compass of the instrumen t, and thereby greatly reduce the labor attendant upon performances, and this elastic ring constitutes an elastic cushion to prevent injury to the musician by the mouth-piece, chiefly at the moment of placing the instrument to his lips, and especially when he is being conveyed in a vehicle; and in the combination and arrangement of the parts, as hereinafter more fully set forth.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of our device. Fig. 2 is a sectional view thereof, and Fig. 3 is a detached view of the rubber holder.

A represents a section of our improvement, the outlet-aperture in the cup at being encircled by the tube 1), whose diameter is several times larger than said aperture, thus forming the shoulder c. The tube I) is rigidly secured to the cup a, and is provided with an orifice for reception of the screw d, for securing the parts together.

The tubular section ofour device (marked B) is provided with the recess 0, formed upon its periphery,for reception of the end of the screw d in securing the parts, the recess being sufliciently broad to allow the vibration of the sections; and it has inserted therein the elastic ringf, which, by reason of its elasticity, is securely held in position. This ring projects a short distance out from the tube B, as shown, and when the mouthpiece A is pressed by the mouth of the musician against the horn this elastic ring, by contact with the shoulder, is thereby contracted.

What we claim is-- In a mouth-piece for musical horns, the combination of the sections A and B and rubber band f, arranged to operate substantially as shown, and for the purpose described.
