UNITED ,STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANCIS M. ALEXANDER, OF MARSHALL, TEXAS.
CA R-DOOR FASTENING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 240,353, dated April 19, 1881.
Application filed September 10, 1880.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANCIS M. ALEXAN- DER, of Marshall, in the county of Harrison and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Oar-Door Fastenings, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to a means for securing the sliding doors of box-cars and other railway-cars.
The invention consists in a novel construction and arrangement of a staple, a hook-hasp, key, and a key-plate, whereby several advantages are obtained, as hereinafter particularly described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a sectional view of a portion of a car and door with my invention applied thereto, showing the parts when not in use. Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing the parts when in use. Figs. Figs. 7 and 8 are views of a modification.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents a portion of the side wall of a car, and B a portion of a door sliding in ways on the outside of the car.
- face of the side wall is a recess, a, and at the point corresponding therewith in the plate D is a slot, d, and in the door B, between the recess a and slot d, is a slot, 1).
E is a hasp having at one end a hook, e, for engagement with the staple C or other device. This hasp is passed through the slot 02 of the (Model.
plate D, and is thus prevented from dropping out when not in use.
G represents a tapering key for engagement with a slot, f, in the hasp E. The key G is connected to the door B by a chain, 3, to prevent it from being lost when not in use. The door being closed, the hooked hasp E is engaged with the staple O or other device, and the key G is passed through the slot f, as shown in Fig. 2, by which means the door is held firmly in place and closely against the side wall, A, so as to exclude sparks, dust, rain, or snow without the necessity for the use of strips or cleats, as heretofore. The key G is also provided with slots 9 for a similar purpose.
Figs. 7 and 8 show a means for securing the key without the use of a chain. In such case the key G is curved at one end and passed through the slot f of the hasp, and is prevented from displacement by means of a rivet or pin, 6, passed through the end of the curved portion, and extending transversely of the slot f.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination of the wall A, having recess a, the sliding door B, having slot 1), the staple G, the plate D, having slot (1, and the hook-staple E e, as and for the purpose specified.
2. The hasp E, provided with the hook e, in combination with the staple 0, door B, and side wall, A, as herein shown and described.
FRANCIS MARION ALEXANDER.
