UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAs H. WALBEIDGE, OE TOLEDO, OHIO.
FLEXIBLE CHUTE` ANDl DUMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 240,289, datedvAprl 19, 1881.
Application filed February 23, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS H. WALBRIDGE, a citizen of the United States, residing at 'Ioledo, in the'county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flexible Chutes and Dumps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being` had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters or gures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention has for its object to provide a flexible chute or dump for lowering' grain, coal, or other articles of a nature requiring careful handling, and it consists of a chute formed of a series of rings provided with rollers and attached to pendent chains or links, said chute being lined with overlapping layers of canvas, leather, or other suitable material, all as will be hereinafter more fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my invention, and Figs. 2 and 3 detail views of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts on the figures.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a series of rings, connected at suitable distances apart to the pendent chains or cords B, to form the frame of my improved chute or dump, said rings A being provided with rollers C, arranged as shown, and which are made of wood, rubber, or other elastic substance, to relieve the grain, coal, or other articles falling into said chute from sudden shocks, as `also to prevent the choking of the chute with the articles passing through the same. Upon the inside ofthe chute thus constructed is arranged a series of canvas, cloth, or leather bags, D, open at both ends, the lower parts of which overlap uponor fit into the next succeeding bag, as fully shown in Fig. 3.
In the construction of my invention it will be observed that the canvas or leather bags D may be used either inside or outside ofthe frame of the chute, although it is deemed preferable to use them upon the inside.
The advantages of my invention will be readily apparent, inasmuch as by its use the articles to be discharged therefrom can be readily transferred to any part of the receiving car or vessel in the quickest manner without injury or breaking of the articles discharged.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful isl. A flexible chute or dump composed of a series of rings, A, provided with elastic rollers C, and connected to pendent chains or cords B, and having inner overlapping linings, D, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination of the overlapping bags or liningsD with the frame of the chute, formed of the rings A, chains or cords B, and rollers G, substantiallyas shown, and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS H. WALBEIDGE.
