*m8, PHOTO-LITHOGRAPNER, WASI UNITED STATES y PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE E. WARREN, or HAMPTON, IOwA.
,CLAMP FOR SULKY'PLOWS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 240,207, dated April 12, 1881. Application tiled August 14, 1880. (Model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. WARREN, of Hampton, in the county of Franklin, and in the State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clamps for Sulky-Plows and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in clamps for connecting the plow-beam to the bail of a sulky-plow, and it is especially designed to be employed in connection with the sulky-plow for which Letters Patent of the United States were granted to me the 16th day of March, 1880, No.225,688, although it may be applied with equal advantage to various other sulky-plows of a similar nature.
The object of the invention is to provide a clamp that will be simple in construction, and that may be applied to the plow-beam and the bail to which the beam is to be connected and removed therefrom at pleasure by the manipulation of a single screw-bolt, and by means of which a closely-fitting and rigid connection between the beam and the bail can be made. These objects I accomplish by the devices illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l represents a vertical section of my improved clamp, showing the same applied to the plow-beam and bail of a sulky-plow to secure the beam to the bail', and Fig. 2 a side elevation of the clamp applied to the beam and bail. Fig. 3 is an end view of the clamp from the bottom of the beam.
The letter Aindicates the jaws of the clamp, (two in number,) constructed of cast Inetal 0r other suitable material. The said jaws, at their adjoining faces, are provided with shoulders B, which form a seat for the lower edge of the plow-beam C, when the same is clamped between them. The jaws, at their upper ends, are slotted longitudinally for the passage of the clamping screw-bolt E, which is provided with a head, F, at one end, and with a screwnut, G, at the other, by means of which the 5o jaws may be tightened or loosened upon the ters L M, so that when the parts are clamped together the blocks will be held in contactl with the jaws beyond possibility of slipping. The letter N indicates a screw-bolt passing through suitable apertures, l?, in the blocks, and provided with a screw-nut, by means of which the blocks may be securely clamped against the outer faces of thejaws.
The operation of my improved device is as follows: rlhe plow-beam is placed over the bail, which is indicated by the letter P. The jaws are then placed at each side of the beam, so that the lower edge thereof will rest upon the shoulders of the respective jaws, the lower slotted ends of the jaws being placed over the bail. The slotted blocks are then secured or placed in position in the slotted lower ends of the jaws, the slots in the blocks setting upon the bail at either side of the jaws. The whole is then clamped together by tightening up the nuts on the screw-bolts, securely clamping the beam to the bail. The lower screwbolt, after once being properly clamped, may afterward remain undisturbed, as the clamp may be removed and replaced by simply operating the upper bolt, thus simplifying the operation of connecting or disconnecting the beam and bail materially.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A clamp for securing the plow-beam to the bail of a sulky-plow, the same consisting of two jaws provided with shoulders to form a seat for the beam, the said jaws being slotted at their upper and lower ends, the upper ends having an adjustable clamping-bolt, and
the lower ends adjustable clamping-blocks and a clamping-bolt, whereby the jaws may be clamped upon the beam and bail, substantially as herein specified.
2. In combination with the clamping-jaws,
