Cotton Chopper.
No. 240,189. Patented April 12.1881.
507172684968: Mercia? N-PETERS, FHOTO-LITHOGRAPHER, WASHINGTON D c UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MICHAEL E. RUDASILL, OF SHELBY, NORTH CAROLINA.
COTTON-CHOPPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 240,189, dated April 12, 1881.
Application filed February 2, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MICHAEL ELI BUDA- SILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Shelby, in the county fof Cleveland and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Gotton-Ohopper; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention consists of a cotton-chopper by means of which the cotton is cultivated and at the same time chopped out to a stand, or nearly so, with distances easily regulated according to the desire of the operator.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a side elevation Fig. 3, a detail view of one of the parts.
A is a plow-beam; B B, two slotted iron feet with plows attached to the lower ends of them. 0 O are the plow-handles; D, a wheel provided with projecting pins E E. The wheel D is journaled upon one side of the front end of the plow-beam A, and runs upon the ground for the purpose of raising the front end of the 0 jointed lever F F, which is also attached to the same side of the plow-beam A, (by a pivot-bolt passing through the center of each arm of the lever and into the beam,) producing a reciprocatin g motion, with intervals ofrest, of the hind end of the said jointed lever F. To the rear end of the lever F is attached a rod of iron, G, with a chopping-knife, H, which may work either at the lower end of the rod G, before the plow, or on a frame connected with the rod G, behind the plow.
As the plow is moved forward, cultivating the cotton, the knife, being at rest, chopping out the cotton, the projecting pins E on the revolving wheel D raise the front end of the jointed lever F, which causes the hind end of 5 the same to rise also, the knife H thus skipping the space in the cotton row, the distances being regulated at the will of the operator bychanging the distances of the projecting pins E in the revolving wheel D. The front end of the jointed lever F is provided with a slotted adjustable iron, J, for the purpose of regulating the stand of the cotton by adjusting the length of the lever F. On the other end of thejointed lever F is attached a cord, K, for the purpose of raising the knife H where the cotton is already to a stand. At the same place is also attached a spring, L,for the purpose ofcausing the knife H to strike a quick lick.
Having thus described my invention, whatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- In a cotton-chopper, the combination, with the beam and wheel having pins E, of the jointed lever, the knife attachment, the spring, and the slotted iron J, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
' MIOH AEL ELI RUDASILL.
