UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE CLOTH ABRASIVE HOLDER Con Stang, Bozeman, Mont.
Application November 20, 1945, Serial No. 629,815
2 Claims.
The invention relates to a holder and more especially to an abrasive cloth strip holder.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a holder of this character wherein abrasive cloth in strip form can be conveniently placed therein and held in a workable condition so that it can be used for sharpening purposes or otherwise.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a holder of this character, wherein the abrasive strip can be replaced by a new strip when the former becomes unfit for service, the holder being of novel construction and is unique in the arrangement of the component parts thereof which are readily accessible and few in number. s
A further object of the invention is the provision of a holder of this character which is simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and eflicient in its purpose, strong, durable, readily and easily adjusted, handy for service, compact, and inexpensive to manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which shows the preferred embodiment of the invention and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a plan View of the holder constructed in accordance with theinvention;
Figure 2 is a side view thereof;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary enlarged longitudinal sectional view through the holder showing the tightener reel;
Figure 4 is a side View of the reel detached.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the holder constituting the present invention comprises a straight blade-like shank I which can be of any desired length, width and thickness, the width and thickness being uniform throughout their extent, and at one end of this shank is a handle I I which may be of any selected design.
Formed at the juncture of the shank I0 and handle I I is a yoke frame I2, in its side branches I3 of which is journalled a rotatable reel in the form of a headed [bolt I4, its head I5 being externally knurled to effect a turning knob thereby. The other threaded end of the bolt I4 carries an externally knurled binding nut I6 so that the bolt can be made fast in the yoke frame I2 in an adjusted position. The stem of the bolt I4 within the bounds of the frame I2 is formed with a longitudinally disposed slot I'I into which is tucked the'reduced terminals I8 of an abrasive cloth strip I9. This strip I9 is looped over and saddle-seated in the outermost free end of the shank I!) so that stretches of such strip will be disposed on opposite side faces of such shank for any service desired thereof.
The reel constituted by the bolt I4 on the turning thereof in one direction will tighten the strip as pressed on the shank Ill, and this bolt is held fast by the nut I 6, the bolt being manually turned. It should be seen that the strip can be renewed at will in the holder.
What is claimed is:
1. A holder of the kind described, comprising a blade-like shank having a handle at one end, a yoke frame formed between the handle and the other end of the shank, a slotted bolt-like reel journalled in the yoke frame, and an abrasive cloth strip looped about the said other end of the shank with stretches thereof lying at opposite sides of the latter and having its ends tucked in the slot of the reel for winding on and from the same.
2. A holder of the kind described, comprising a blade-like shank having a handle at one end, a yoke frame formed between the handle and the other end of the shank, a slotted bolt-like reel journalled in the yoke frame, an abrasive cloth strip looped about the said other end of the shank with stretches thereof lying at opposite sides of the latter and having its end tucked in the slot of the reel for winding on and from the same and means for securing the reel in adjusted position in the yoke frame.
