Description
UNITED STATES PATENT oEEioE.
JESSE A. CRANDALL, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
BOOKING TOY.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 24,008, dated May 17, 1859*; Reissued March 11, 1862, No. 1,287.
To all whom it may concern: p
Be it known that I, JESSE A. CRANDALL, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain novel and useful Improvements in the Construction of Childrens Rocking Toys or Vehicles; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which letters correspond with the specification and form a part thereof.
Figure l, letter (A,) represents the body of the vehicle which receives the child.
(B, is a frame that supports the body, and C, C,) are two flat wound springs secured to the frame (B,) at one end by means of the cross bar (E,) around which the springs (C, C,) operate when acted upon by the verticle pressure of the weight (of the child) in the body at (N,); the springs (C, C,) being secured to the body at the back end thereof. Any backward or forward movement of the occupant of the box (A,) causes the springs to vibrate, thereby giving the body a backward and forward motion similar to the motion of a rocking horse or cradle. n
The longitudinal bar (1),) prevents the body (A,) from rocking too far back, it (the bar) being attached to the transverse bar (E,) at the back end by means of an iron loop or band (S,) by which means the shaft or pole (1),) turns when acted upon by the body or box (A,) an elastic string (F,) and thumb screw or pin (z',) may be used to prevent the pole (D) from rising too high, but I prefer using any other device if necessary that will prevent the box from rocking too far back, therefore I do not confine myself to the above arrangement of securing the pole (D,) at any desired angle but use that which is the most convenient for the time and place.
The superiority of the above described apparatus over the ordinary rocking horse, cab, box or cradle, is, first that it gives an easy rocking motion to the box without the jar of the rockers upon the floor; secondly, there is no wear and tear of the carpet as is the case of the apparatus that are in common use; and lastly but not least, there is no danger of the child being thrown out or off the vehicle or toy if the same is properly secured by the pole I do not claim the invention of the box (A,) as applied to rockers in any shape or form but What I claim as novel and what I wish to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is- The flat wound springs (C, C) pole or bar (D) elastic string (F,) pin or thumb screw (i) or their equivalent, in combination with the box (A,) and frame (B,) arranged and operated in the manner and for the purpose set forth and shown in the drawings.
In testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe my name in the presence of two witnesses.
JESSE A. CRANDALL.
Witnesses:
JAMES P. MCLEAN, B. P. CRANDALL.
