Description

I d l!) v s. WHITEHALL.- End Gate for Wagons, N'o. 2 40,063 Pat ented April 12, I881.
UNITED STATES SAMUEL WHITEHALL,
OF ,ATTIGA, ,INDIANA.
END-GATE FOR WAGONS.
SPECIFICATION forming end-gates for wagons, the object of the same being to provide an end-gate which will be of small initial cost, easy of operation, and so adapted, by its peculiar construction of fastenin grods and guards, to swing either from above or below, thereby respectively forming an'opening through which the material passes, and which prevents the spreading of the same, incident to the dumping of an ordinary cart, and forming a shoveling-board, which materially aids the workmen in unloading; and with these ends in view my invention consists in certain details of construction and combinations of parts, as will be more fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a view, in perspective, of the gate, showing the top fasten ing-bolt released from engagement with the sides of the wagon-body, and the end-gate thrown back for shoveling or unloading. Fig. 2 is a view showing the position of the gate when the lower fastening-bolt is withdrawn. Fig. 3 is a view of the end-gate. Fig. 4: is a detail View of the fastening-bolt; and Fig. 5 is a detail view of the slotted plates in the sides of the wagon-body.
A represents the end-board, to which are secured in any suitable manner the two upright pieces a a, which are provided with openings h, through which pass the bolts 0 0.
To the ends of the gate A and the sides of the upright pieces a a. are secured the guards B, which are made of metal or wood, as desired, said pieces being pyramidal in shape, with their bases attached in the end-gate, and provided at their apices with a hook, m, either made solid therewith or secured thereto in any desired manner, said hooks engaging with the stop-pins b, secured to the sides of the wagonbody, and holding the gate in the position part of Letters Patent No. 240,063, dated April 12, 1881. Application filed February 15, 1881. (Model) shown in Fig. 1. The openings h in the upright pieces are continued through the guards B, which forms a clear passage-way for the bolts to pass. 0 G are fastening-bolts, provided at their handle end L with enlarged screw threads 01 (1. Between the enlarged heads 0 c and the screw threaded ends d d are formed stops 6 c, said stops preventing the complete withdrawal of the bolts.
Into one side of the wagon are fitted two plates, D D, one for each bolt. These plates are each provided with an open slot terminat. ing in a circular recess, f, for the reception of the head of the bolt. of the wagon lying immediately behind the plates D D is slotted precisely like the plates, and is provided with a metallic plate, I), which fits under the plates D D, and forms a flat bearing, on which the under surface of the enlarged head rests; or the bearing tor the enlarged head may be made solid with the plates D D, instead of providing separate pieces therefor.
are secured in any suitable manner, having screw threaded openings g, into which the screw-threaded ends of the bolts are secured.
To the inside of the wagon-body, directly over the hooks h of the guards B, are secured two keepers, K K, which overlap the hook portion of the guard when the end-gate is in a vertical position, and prevent the bulging out of the guards, which would be the case should gravel or dirt become clogged between the guards and the side of the wagon-body.
When it is desired to use the gate as a shovelingboard, or for unloading the wagon, the handle of the upper bolt is turned until the screw is released from the plate 1, when the handle is withdrawn until the enlarged head is out of the recess in the plate D and the stop strikes the upright piece a. The shank of the bolt is then opposite the horizontal slot in the plate D, and the top of the end-gate can be inclined backward until the hooks h of the guards B come in contact with the pin 1) and the gate held in position, thereby closing the spaces usually seen in wagons between the side of the end-gate and sides of the wagon-bod y and preventing the earth from falling out.
When it is desired to use my invention on heads 0 c, and at their opposite ends with.
To the opposite side of the wagon-body plates 7 That portion of the side dumping wagons orcarts the lower fasteningbolt can be operated on precisely as above described, and as the wagon is dumped the endgate retains its vertical position by gravity, thus dispensing with the necessity of taking out the tail-gate every time the load has to be dumped. All the parts are securely fastened together, and the risks of losing the fasteningbolts are obviated, as it is impossible to remove them from the end-gate. The upright posts perform the double function of strengthening the gate and forming the hearings in which the fastening-bolts slide.
If desired, either one of the fastening-bolts can be dispensed with, and in its place an ordinary rod may be used, and instead of using the slotted plates D D at the side they may be left off, and the recess for the reception of the head of the bolt may be formed in the side or bottom of the wagon, which will answer the same purpose.
It is evident that many slight changes in the construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of my invention, and hence I would have it understood that I do not limit myself to the exact construction shown and described; but,
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is v n 1. An end-gate having guards or wings attached to the opposite ends thereof, in combination with fastening-rods engaging with the upper and lower sides of the end-gate, the construction being such that either the upper or lower fastening-rod may serve as a pivotal bearing for the end-gate, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with an end-gate, of fastening bolts or rods screw-threaded at one end, and provided with stops or collars e,'to prevent their displacement from the end-gate, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, with an end-gate, of screw-threaded fastening-rods provided with enlarged heads .or collars c on their handle ends, and open slotted plates attached to the wagon-body, said plates provided with circular openings for the reception of the heads or collars c, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand.
