COOKING-STOVE.

Specification of Letters Patent No. 23,983, dated May 10, 1859.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY G. LEONARD, of Taunton, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Cooking-Stove; and I do hereby declare that the same is fully described and represented in the following specification and the accompanying drawings, of which Figure 1, denotes a side elevation of such stove. Fig. 2, a vertical and longitudinal section of it. Fig. 3, is a vertical and transverse section of it. Fig. 4, is a horizontal section of the flues underneath the oven.

The nature of my invention consists in so constructing and arranging one or more of the oven plates of the stove that they can be removed to clean the flues and after the flues have been cleanedthey can be replaced without loosening or separating the plates which form the outside of the stove; also in making one or more of the interior flue plates so that it can be removed and the flue cleaned and the plate replaced without loosening or separating the plates which form the outside of the stove.

The object of my invention is to enable the flues of the stove to be cleared of soot or other accumulations without the necessity of taking the body or main case of the stove apart, and I accomplish this by so applying the upper half of the lower or middle flue, the bottom plate and the rear side of the oven to the case of the stove, as to enable them to be removed through the opening of the door of the oven without any dis turbance of the connections of the main plates, composing the body or case of the stove. A cooking stove so made I believe to be novel, for, as cooking stoves are usually constructed, it is not only diificult to clear out their smoke flues, but in order to do so, thoroughly, it becomes necessary to take apart or separate most, if not all, the plates and connections which constitute what is usually termed the body or outer case. This, besides being attended with much labor and inconvenience is often destructive or injurious to the lining or other parts of the stove.

In the drawings, A denotes the outer part or case of the stove, while B is the oven; G, the fire place; D, the ash-pit or chamber for receiving the ashes as they may fall from the grate; E, is the grate.

Extending over the entire top of the oven is a flue F, for receiving the smoke from the fireplace and conducting the same in contact with the top plate G, of the oven and into a descending flue H, which goes down alongside the rear side plate I), of the oven, and opens into a horizontal flue I, which passes underneath the bottom plate 0, of the oven, and at or near its front part opens into a return or middle flue K, arranged as shown in the drawings. This middle flue K, communicates at its rear end with a vertical flue L, carried up against the back plate of the case A, of the stove.

That portion d, of the upper part of the return flue K, which is beneath the oven, should be made as a cover to the rest of the flue, or so as to admit of being lifted off the same, and taken out of the oven door way whenever the bottom plate 0, of the oven is out of the stove. Figs. 2, and 3, exhibit such part d, so applied to the remainder of the return flue.

The oven has door-ways f, g, each of which is equal to an entire end of the oven. The bottom plate 0, or plates 0, 0', should rest on feet or ledges and be formed of such size as to be raised easily out of place and removed through the oven door-way after the rear side plate of the oven may have been taken from the oven. The said side plate is shown in the drawings as resting on the bottom plate and as provided with a projection is, to prevent it from moving inward. at its lower edge. The said side plate is also kept in place by means of a lever or turn button 2', which is applied to it and when in a vertical position rests against a projection Z, extended from the top plate of the oven. By turning the said lever or button into a horizontal position, the said rear side plate may be tipped forward at top and taken out of the door-way of the oven, so

as to expose the entire descending flue in a manner to enable it to be thoroughly cleaned through the oven. On thus removing the back plate of the oven, the bottom plate or plate 0, as well as the cover plate d, may be withdrawn from their places, and so as to allow of full access to the flues under the oven, all such being efl'ected while the oven doors are open, and without any disturbance of the outer case of the stove or the lining or plates or connection of the plates of the case.
