19 Claims.
Thepresent invention relates to. louver posts for louver fencing in spray-cooling systems, such. as in atmospheric-cooling: towers, spray ponds, or the like In: spray-cooling towers, ponds-,or. the: like,,it is usual tosurroun'dthe pond. ortower space; or the space where the cooling water is sprayed,v with a fence or. wall having louvers for the passage of air, to prevent spray drift, and; the like; and-such fences or walls usually 'are made upof sections, with supporting. posts: atv intervals and at. the cornerssiorsupporting the louver elements, such as. louver boards, or the like.
Among the objects of the present invention is to: provide a novel supporting means,v usually termed posts, which. issimple of. construction, easily maintained. neat and clean, permits facile insertion and removal. of the louver boards, which boards may be made. of. redwood or the like, and
omitting, the useof any bo1ts, nails ,.screws1or any other fastening. element or. means Fencing: of this t ypemay beinstalled atminimum expense-in labor and material.
More particularly, the. present. invention comprehends a novel device having; a series of. horizontally spaced. uprightelements .of which at least two at these elements. have. vertically arranged spacedrnotches. so related that an end. of a louver board will. rest in a pairv of such notchesin a slanted. positionand with the: lower edge, of the boa-rdabutting. a third element to hold-theboardy in a given and desired. position. andrelation.
Other objec.ts,,advantages, capabilities-,. features and; tl'ielikeare comprehended= by the: invention as; will later.- appear, and as are inherently pos:-- sessed. bythe invention.
Referring briefly to the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a view in elevation of a structureernbodying; theinvention Fig; 2'Iis: a view in perspective, onan. enlarged scale, of a art: of such structure;
Fig. 3-iis a horizontal sectional'view taken. in aaplane represented by line 3- 3 in Fig; l of the drawings;
Fig. l is a fragmentary side view in elevation taken in a plane represented by line 44in Fig; 3 i the drawings; and
Fig: 5 is a view in side elevation of an intermediate post constructed in accordance with the invention.
Referringmore in detail to the drawings, the embodiment chosen to illustrate the invention is shown as comprising an upright member I of channel form and having a wall or web portion provided a series of notches or cut-outs 5 for" receivingan" end portion 6 of a louver board 1. as later more fully explained.
Within the channel member I is an upright member 8 of angular form and having a flange 9 which may be. suitably fixed to theweb 2 oftthe: channel .member I as by; spot welding-,,tack welding;.or: the like, and having a flange Ill provided. with a serieszof notches or cut-outs II for receiv-- ing; an end portionxfi of the louverrboard- 'Lfthese. notches 5 and. II bein so related, as in. a sort, of staggered. relation, so-that when the. end 6 of. the. louver 1 extends into .a'v pair of such. notches the louver board, I- will be in: inclined. position,
. as shown. in Figs. 2 and 4, withv the-lower edge I2:
of the: louver board abutting against the; flange. 3 of the member I..
To form a post. betweenv sections the members I- are placed back to'backwith the-webs- 2. and.
- 2 fixed together, as: shownv in the. right hand.
portion of; Fig. 3,,asby spot welding, tack weldiing, or the..like,, and to-corner posts thememberss I are placed with the; back at right angles; tov each. other. as shown. in theleft-hand portion of Fig. 3 and. are. preferably tack welded at. the;
meetin edges of the Webs 2'. The lower'endsoff the members I preferably stand. upon: footingsv or base members, as plates l3, see Fig. 5, for the: center or intermediate-posts between sectionsof the fence,.or;.as! plates I4, see Figs. 2. and 3,,for the corner posts, In bothcases, thelower ends of the members I are preferably-welded to-the base; plates or footings I2 and I3: as the case may be. If desired,.said; base platesma-y rest upon. sills or. runners I5 (see Fig.- l') which may rest upon: or in. the ground, or. upon. a floor, ora pavement, or the like. If desired, the platesmay have-holes, suchas holes I6 (seeFig; 3) or I1 (see Fig; 2) for passage.- of. securing elements I8, such as: a. bolt. lag screw-,jor the like. Usually, it is: desirable. to reinforce the corner post by gussetpieces or plates, such as plate I9, shown in Figs..2, 3 and: 4-, in which the lower edge. of the plate I9. is. suitably welded. to thebase plate I I, and theupright edgeof the plate I 9.- is welded, asby tack welding, to: the corner juncture of the member I, as shown. in Fig. 3.
In assembling, the posts; are. located. in place on the sills. or like supports I5and secured in place. Then the louver boards] are simply slid into place with their louver edges IZ. in contact. with the. flanges 3 and the end portions-6 thereofrextend ing in the notches 5 and LI, as shown. A cOnverse operation. effects an. aseasy removal thereof. The angular positioning of. the boards 1,. as shown, is such that. the Wind. cannot. displace them.
While I have. herein described and. upon; the. drawings. shown an illustrative. embodiment. of
v I the invention, it. ist be und r to .th l'i 2, and" flanges- 3* and 4; and-in the flange 4 are o e 5 0d at t e in vention is not limited thereto but comprehends: other constructions, arrangements of parts-,., details, features and" the like without departing from the spirit of the invention.
