When the sticks have been arranged on the platform as described, the pillar is operated to raise the upper surfaces of the upper row of sticks somewhat above the top surfaces of the well-defining bodies 29 and 30. The slide floor 5 is then drawn outwardly, rendering the gluing accessories readily accessible, and the glue is applied to the exposed surfaces of the upper row of sticks. In the gluing position described the surfaces to be glued are above any part of the stand proper, may be easily treated, and the accidental application of the glue to the stand is largely if not entirely prevented.
The row of sticks to which glue has been applied is then merely slid off the next row below onto any convenient conveyor or table, exposing the upper surfaces of .the next row of sticks. The pillar is again operated to raise the platform until the ten exposed surfaces of the sticks are at the desired and proper height, and the gluing is proceeded with.
It will be apparent that but a single workman is necessary for the complete gluing operation and as the sticks can be readily piled on the platform by the same workman when the platform( is exhausted and also such workman or at least one other man may serve to remove the sticks to which glue has been applied, it is obvious that not only is the work facilitated, but fewer men for the same work under conventional practice are required to do effective work. Furthermore, the job is materially cleaner than heretofore, for no glue is wasted on the surrounding surfaces, and the surfaces to which the glue is to be applied stand up on a solid base to insure Ithe most effective and rapid application of the glue.
The stand in its entirety is preferably quite small for convenience in movement from place to place where the gluing operation may be desired. However, there is no limitation in size contemplated, as the stand may be made, if desired, in a size to accommodate and effectively glue any desired object or series of objects.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is:
1. A gluing stand including a frame having a top, a vertically adjustable pillar mounted for movement through said top, manually-operable means for adjusting the pillar, a platform secured on the pillar, wall members carried by the frame top and forming a well within which the platform is positioned for movement, one of the walls being adjustable with respect to the other to increase the width of the well to accommodate platforms of different widths, said walls having wide flat tops forming work surfaces.
2. A gluing stand comprising, a frame, the frame having a platform well therein, a platform movable in said well, means arranged within the frame for selectively raisin-gr or lowering the platform, said well being defined by hollow bodies having relatively broad top surfaces disposed in a common horizontal plane, and one of said bodies being laterally adjustable on said frame.
3. A gluing stand comprising, a frame, the frame having a platform well therein, a platform movable in said well, means arranged within the frame for selectively raising or lowering the platform, said well being defined by hollow bodies having relatively broad top surfaces disposed in a common horizontal plane, and a guide support carried by the frame and tting within one of said hollow bodies to permit limited adjustment of such hollow body relative to the other hollow j body for adjustment of the width of the well.
4. A gluing stand having a platform for the articles to be glued, a pillar for supporting the platform, manually operable selective means for raising and lowering the pillar, a well in which the platform moves, means for adjusting one dimension of such well, friction means engaging the pillar to prevent its accidental movement under load, said pillar engaging means including a slide bar movable in a slot in and transversely of the pillar, a face plate on the slide bar to bear against one surface of the pillar, and a spring to exert tension on such face plate in its contact with the pillar.
5. A gluing stand comprising va platform, a pair of upstanding bodies mounted upon a tablelike top in spaced relation and having opposed vertical walls forming a well, said top having an opening centrally between said bodies, .a pillar mounted for vertical movement through said opening, a platform supported upon the upper end of the pillar above said top and within the well, said pillar havin-g a series of upwardly facing ratchet teeth along one side and a series of downwardly facing ratchet teeth upon the opposite side, a pair of ratchet levers each supported upon a side of the pillar adjacent to and for engagement with a series of ratchet teeth, said ratchet levers being supported for oscillatory and longitudinal shifting movement, a spring connection between the ratchet levers normally drawing the same into operative connection with the ratchet teeth adjacent thereto, an oscillatable lever operatively coupled with each ratchet lever at the end thereof remote from the pillar for effecting both the oscillation and the longitudinal movement of the adjacent ratchet lever, the said upstanding bodies having fiat tops disposed in a common horizontal plane, the platform being movable to a position in which its top surface is in the said common plane, and one of said upstanding bodies being movable relative to the other body for changing the width of the well.
