Application March 30, 1945, Serial N 0. 585,753
(Granted under the act of March 3, 1883, as amended April 30, 1928; 370 O. G. 757) 1 Claim.
This invention relates to a device for reshaping the inner arcuate surface of a cylinder.
The invention is described in connection with its use in reshaping bearing circles or azimuth circles which frequently are knocked off the compass stand during battle or otherwise misshapen through accident. It is noted that in the past when deformation occurred, the reshaping of the rings was accomplished by dropping or bouncing the rings on a work bench, fioor, or other surface. In the case of sharp bends a raw hide hammer was used while the edge of the ring was held against the work bench.
One object of this invention is a device to reshape accurately inner cylindrical surfaces which have become deformed or distorted.
Another object of this invention is a device to reshape bearing circles and azimuth circles with such a high degree of accuracy that subsequent calibration of the circles will allow the use of these circles for navigational or piloting purposes.
Further objects and advantages of this invention, as well as its construction, arrangement and operation, will be apparent from the following description and claim in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the shaping fix ture with portions broken away for clarity of illustration.
Figure 2 is a vertical section on the line 22 of Figure 1 and showing the operation of the device in connection with the reshaping of a bearing circle.
Figure 3 is a front view of the operating lever.
The shaping fixture has two generally semicircular sections lil-lil, each section l having a U shaped recess ll. When assembled together the combination of the two U shaped recesses l l-i I will form a generally square hollow for the reception of turnbuckle i2.
Turnbuckle I2 comprises a central knurled cylinder l3 and two threaded studs I l-45, extending therefrom. Stud 14 is left hand threaded while stud I5 is right hand threaded. Cylinder i3, also, has two bores l6-l6 for the reception is turned by hand until the semi-circular sections l0l0 are in contact with inner surface 23. The operating lever I! is then inserted in either bore l6 and the semi-circular sections Ill-I0 are forced apart until the bearing circle 22 resumes the accurate contour necessary for its position on a compass stand.
It is to be understood that semi-circular sections l0-l0 are accurately machined to insure the precise shaping of the bearing circle 22.
It is to be understood that various modifications and changes may be made in this invention without departing from the spirit and scope thereof as set forth in the appended claim.
The invention described herein may be manufactured and used by or for the Government of the United States of America for governmental purposes without the payment of any royalties thereon or therefor.
What is claimed is:
A fixture for reshaping an internal cylindrical surface, said fixture comprising two generally semi-circular members, the said semi-circular members having their diameters closely parallel, a U shaped recess in each of said semi-circular members, the openings of said U shaped recesses being on the diameters of said semi-circular members, a left hand threaded bore in the base of the U of one of said recesses, a right hand threaded bore in the base of the U of the other of said recesses, a knurled cylinder within said recesses, said knurled cylinder having two threaded studs integral therewith, one of said threaded studs having a left hand thread and received in said left hand threaded bore, the other said stud having a right hand thread and received in said right hand threaded bore, said knurled cylinder having a plurality of bores, a lever, said lever being located in one of said knurled cylinder bores, a plurality of cylindrical apertures in each of said semi-circular members, said apertures being located between said recesses and the circumferences of said semicircular members, said apertures being parallel to said knurled cylinder and opening on the diameters of said semi-circular members, the
